South Africa currently not on the grid to receive dedicated local Black Ops servers
When it was announced last year that Modern Warfare 2 (PC) would not feature dedicated servers, PC gamers around the world breathed a collective sigh of despair. Dedicated servers allow low latency, always-on, stable battlegrounds for PC gamers to log into whenever they want. The peer-to-peer matchmaking system included with Modern Warfare 2 is wrought with bugs, and it is often impossible to find a game.
So finding out that Call of Duty: Black Ops will be getting dedicated servers was music to the ears of many PC gamers, myself and loads of MyGaming forumites included.
However, it appears that there is yet another twist in the tale.
Site director of planetcallofduty.com and planetmedalofhonor.com, Josh Peckler, tweeted the following: “Let's do this! First off dedis will be rented from GameServers only!”
This means that GameServers.com will be the exclusive agents for managing Black Ops servers. According to Gameservers, there will be Call of Duty: Black Ops servers positioned in the following locations:
(AU) Sydney, Australia
Montreal, Canada
Toronto, Canada
Vancouver, Canada
(EU) Frankfurt, DE
(EU) Denmark
(EU) Paris, France
(Asia) Tokyo, Japan
(EU) Amsterdam, NL
(EU) Warsaw, Poland
(RU) Moscow, Russia
(EU) London, UK
Atlanta, Georgia
Chicago, Illinois
Dallas, Texas
Denver, Colorado
Los Angeles, California
New York / New Jersey
Phoenix, Arizona
San Jose, California
Seattle, Washington
St. Louis, Missouri
Tampa Bay, Florida
Virginia/Washington D.C.
None of these locations are close enough to South Africa to offer decent latencies, which means that the multiplayer situation for Black Ops is looking dire.
We have contacted Gameservers, Activision, Treyarch, as well as local gaming service providers iGame and WebAfrica for feedback. Hopefully some sort of resolution can be found, but as of now, it looks like local PC gamers will be kept out in the dark on this one.
A huge thanks goes to Maplassie for helping research and compile the above information.
Update
We just got this email from Gameservers:
I'm afraid we do not have a datacenter in that region at this time. We are looking to open new locations were there is high demand, but I don't have any specific information as to if/when we would be doing so in the region.
If you want dedicated Black Ops servers in SA, why not email Gameservers at [email protected].
