Does a black tie event require one to wear a Tuxedo specifically or can any formal suit be worn?

I don't own a Tux but I do have two suits (Black and light grey). Don't want to splurge on another.

Thanks

Traditionally, a tuxedo is the correct attire for a black tie event. Times are changing so you could probably get away with a nice black suit. That said, there's just something about wearing a tux which is great. I'd go tux and bow tie if you're able to.

All black is the only way. The correct way.

Rent it that side.

If possible, loop the BBC around your neck and let people think it’s a gag tie.

I presume an evening event. But where? It doesn't pay to be vague. Different countries have different expectations.

Two things:

1) Contact them and ask to clarify. Terms like "black tie", "formal", "tux", "dinner jacket" are used differently in different countries, so it's a useful way to phrase the question. For example, in some countries "dinner jacket" just means a white tux, where elsewhere it's a different style of jacket/trousers.

2) Find out if you can rent one at the destination. These things are expensive.

I'm curious why not just call or mail that side just tell them you want to ensure correct attire. Get correct attire sorted.

Otherwise it's all speculation...

If you are going to Sydney then you better get a proper Tux else they will call you a Bogan from the western suburbs. Those people are very classist.

At $180 to $200 - no way in hell
I get that; but if you don't want to buy or rent one then your only options are to wear what you've got.

Typically the invite would give information on what attire is acceptable. Look I reckon a black suit and tie should be OK; most likely most will be wearing a tux depending on the event but I'm sure there''ll be others with random blazers, dinner jackets so you won't stand out which is a good thing.

For black tie event and if I was wearing a normal suit, I'd go regular tie and not bow-tie, else the collar might not 100% gel.
