Blackberry 8310 running really slow

My BB 8310 is starting to run really slow. Every now and then it takes a very long time to move between the application shortcuts on the main menu. Also it freezes quite a bit now. I have to pull out the battery on the unit at least twice a day now.

Is there anyway to do some maintenance on the phone to improve the performance?

Please don't say I have to reinstall the OS. That is the last thing I want to do.

It has the latest OS on it at the moment.

Look at how many applications are running at the same time - i.e., how much free memory you have. Close applications (such as GMail or RSS readers) that run in the background - this should free up memory. Also mark them not to start up by default.

On my old pearl, I have a gazillion applications, but only GTalk runs in the background, and I hardly get any slowdown.
