Hi All

I'd just like to know if it's worth my while to get the BB 9700 Bold on Vodacom Top up 315 without the BIS. What features will I be compromising if I don't have BIS? Can I still have the full functionality if I intend to pay for data? i.e. using R 315 airtime.

My other options with the contract are: Nokia 6710 Navi, Nokia E72, Sony Ericsson Aino, Samsung S8300. I really like what the BB has to offer, but without the BIS, I'm not so sure. Are any of these other phones a better option?

Apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum.

In a nutshell, the follwoing wont work without BIS

Internet Browser (although I think som guys have found a way round this)
Vodafone Satnav
Facebook
MSN messenber
BBM messengert
Twitter
Appworld

And also, I dont think you will be able to MMS without it as this requires a service book also that gets sent to your phone when BIS is active.

Having a Blackberry without BIS is like having a car with no Petrol.............so No i wouldn't advise it

OC hit the nail.

Just for interest sake, why don't you want BIS, Costs?

Nope, its a business contract, so we aren't allowed to add any extra costs. As it stands, the top up 315 package offers the phone without BIS.

Any ideas for an alternate phone?

Thanks for all the useful info guys. I don't think my work understands that you have to have BIS with a Blackberry. Not gonna argue with them though, don't wanna bite the hand that feeds.

Will probably go with Nokia E72...

Hey, is it even possible to sell a BB without BIS? Just an afterthought...

Yes. Many clients upgrade to a Blackberry, but dont want us to automatically activate BIS on the line they upgrading because the phone will be used by someone else....be it a grand child, sister, brother or mistress. :)

BlackBerrys can be run in the "internet" APN outside of BIS that will make access to the internet possible (and at much better speeds than BIS). BBM and push e-mail will not work, and without this a BlackBerry just haven't got a competitive advantage. On Top Up 315 you should be able to get much better than the Nokia E72 though,

Here is a suggestion for you OP, get the BB9700 with the top up 315, pop that sim into the above phone, then get a prepaid sim for the Blackberrry and @ R60 bucks a month you have all the cornucopia of delights BB's offer. :D

If it was me I would first take this matter to whomever at the company calls the shots about these matters ... convince him/her of the value of BIS ... before going for anything else (like the E72 ... the 9700 on BIS will be a far better solution).

Cnt u jus pay ur company the R59 every month?

I work for a parastatal. Considering the red tape to do something that makes complete sense, its not worth it.

Also, I would have to justify the R 59 a month with how much data (excl. downloads) I would use with the BB. I not sure I would even use data to the value of R 59 a month.

I also suspect that I should be able to get better than E72, but the work just gave me a list of 5 phones to choose from (Nokia E72, BB 9700 without BIS, Sony Ericsson Aino, Samsung S8300, Nokia 6710 Navi). I don't think they (finance & admin dept.) have any idea of what they should be aiming at. I personally think Vodacom's laughing all the way to the bank.

Really?
How much should they charge for unlimited browsing and email?
