BlackBerry Bold 9900 hands-on

Is the touch multi-touch?

Also, any indications of the pricing bracket or release dates for these phones?

Capacitive touch display, so multi-touch capable (like the Torch), but we didn't really get to mess with that too much. I'll check it out again when the new build is loaded tonight or tomorrow.

No pricing information forthcoming, unfortunately, but the device is due for release "this summer," pending operator type approvals. Will try to find out from our carriers how far they are in the process.

Thanks. Enjoying the updates!

After watching the Engadget video of this in action I'm not convinced that Blackberry will still be competitive with the other leading brands in future. They have BBM and the other "business" features etc, but the actual devices are crap. Plus the 1.2GHz processor doesn't make it near to as smooth as WP7/iPhone.

Roguemat, as a user of both BlackBerry and Apple phones I appreciate the strengths of the Bold series and will get the 9900 as soon as it becomes available. My old "hog" - Bold 9000 - is still going strong and remains my primary communications device despite having an iPhone 4. I am glad RIM returned to the successful 9000 keyboard on the Bold series. That, together with a touch screen, will be a winner in my books.

This phone will be my next one. Still using my Bold 9000 and also glad its returned and is now better!

I have used a multitude of phones and this phone for day to day comms and business can NOT be BEATEN for my personal usage patterns (Your mileage may vary)

OK, I get that but do you not feel that the screen is a bit small for touch? Even the Blackberry guy in the video had trouble clicking things. I swore by a hardware keyboard until using a descent touch screen one (HTC HD7) and now can't imagine needing one.
That is obviously my opinion, and I can understand why people do want hardware keyboards.

I feel like an Apple user now. Just bought the Bold 3 a couple of weeks ago, now to find out it has been superceded!!!
Not good RIM!!

After many months of use I'm still not happy with the iPhone touch keyboard. The moment I use the Bold again I realise how damn good that keyboard is. The keyboard on the Bold 9000 is wide and not as cramped as those on the Curve/Torch and newer Bolds. The 9900 seems to have the old 9000 keyboard.

The Touch screen on the 9900 is small yes and there will for sure be challenges, but I suspect it will not be much worse than on the iPhone for example as the text sizes and therefore link sizes will be the same ... just more vertical and horizontal scrolling involved (which, I guess for many will be a pain) ... but, as I said in another thread I don't see a phone as the right tool for web browsing anyway. That's why the tablets (iPad/Playbook/etc) is now such a big deal. I have an iPad and never use my phones (Bold or iPhone) for surfing the web anymore. In the absence of a tablet, yes, the screen size for web browsing is a big issue, but I believe the future lies in phone + tablet (exactly why RIM is heading that direction with the Playbook tied to a phone).

A phone - for me - must become as small as possible but must be able to handle typing well (as that is what I do a lot on my phone). A tablet then handles the tasks where a larger screen matters (like browsing the web, etc). The two in combination is - for me - the way to go. Trying to make one device do all well is never going to work and the manufacturers have all realised that.

The way I see it is that, despite all the negativity, RIM is on the right track. They are under huge pressure to find quick wins and their effort to achieve quick wins is blocking onlookers' view of the good road they are now on.

Tough one.. while i like my bold currently having a bigger full screen seems awesome for watching movies and stuff on it. Other than that the keyboard is always cool as my sis is always complaining about typing on the screen :P

I am not impressed. A physical keyboard for today's standards is so ancient! And then that small touch screen to work on! Not to mention the poor OS, low resolution screen etc etc. The list goes on.This product fails in all respects. The iPhone remains superior, period. Vonk is obviously biased with his comparison of the iPhone and the BB. His comments can't be taken seriously.

Vice versa.

Shouldn't you be posting about your location being traced in the iPhone section? Why come trash BB? Some people actually *like* a qwerty keyboard.

Oh thank god, I really DIDN'T want the torch. The bold2 can hold out till later in the year, then I'll get this. Looking good, but the shape looks like a bold1?

I just stated my experience with the full understanding and intent that what is valid for me may not be valid for others. I've defended Apple on here many times and have/use a range of Apple products every day (I'm typing this on my iPad). For me the BlackBerry Bold has been MY communications device of preference, and I will get a Bold again. A good physical keyboard may be ancient for you (and many others) but for me (and many others) it is very effective. As I stated many times by now: One device will never be good at all things. The answer lies in a combination, and for me the best combination at present is Bold+iPad, but this will be different for different users. You don't have to take this serious, do whatever works best for YOU.
