Blackberry Bold Tips/Tricks/Apps Thread

sadly, no - i find the ringtones very soft - which one are you using?

Right now I'm using an MP3, previously I used the Stewart Copeland ringtones, but I've noticed some of the others are quite loud too.
There is a way to make an MP3 louder on your PC - there's a program called Audacity that let's you increase the volume level of a mp3 or wav quite easily and to select the part of a song you want to use.

thanks, i know how to do that, i'll just boost the old phone ring and see if it helps. I can hear it fine in the car etc, it's just if the phone is in another room or something i often don't hear it, never had that prob with the nokia. I work in the music biz so hopefully there's nothing wrong with my ears!

an another note, i haven't received any push email today - with voda, anyone else having this problem?

I'm not 100% about this but if you set Options - Advanced Options - TCP - APN to 'blackberry.net'(leave the rest blank) your phone will not connect through the MTN APN.
So far if I switch to the MTN browser it automatically switches back to 'internet browser' and applications that don't go through BIS don't connect to the internet, Opera Mini also seems to be using BIS. I've keep monitoring but this seems like the perfect solution to ensure you don't get charged for internet use at all.
Obviously if you need to do a larger download or use your phone as a modem then delete the entry so your phone can connect to the MTN APN again.

I was wondering about this as well. Only difference is I put a fake APN in TCP settings but the result is the same. The BB browser can now only use the BIS APN but I didn't try Opera mini out. It would be awesome if I can use that on BIS! I'll check it out and report back.

Yep Opera Mini is now definately using BIS. Awesome! I tested it by downloading something in BB browser and opening a page up in Opera Mini at the same time. The 3G BB icon also stays put on the screen.

How do you know what is using the BB APN or not? No matter what program I use I see the 3G BB Icon...

If you can connect to the internet with an application while downloading something in BB browser using BIS then the other application must also be using BIS because your phone can only access one APN at a time.

Bear in mind that some applications can switch between both APN's (Opera can, so can Viigo and Vlingo, but it's possible to set the last two to only go through BIS). So far I haven't had any charges using Opera Mini or Bolt so I think inserting 'blackberry.net' in the TCP settings will ensure that you're always using BIS.

I have a 8310 curve, just activated my BIS on VC, how do I know if I am going through the right APN and not going to get a shocker of a bill later this month? does the 8310 have a indication icon of sorts to let you know?

Check your manual, on the Bold you get a capital letter EDGE to tell you you're on BIS (but this doesn't work correctly in my experience). If you have TCP settings in options try setting them to 'blackberry.net' as mentioned above.
As long as you set your browser to 'internet browser/blackberry' (not Vlive or Vodacom) and don't use any applications that didn't come with your phone you shouldn't get charged.
Wouldn't hurt to check your balance every few days to be sure.

it turns out the 'blackberry.net' TCP setting is not entirely foolproof. I just downloaded the Mxit IM programme and it connected directly to the MTN APN (no B symbol on 3G) but this is the only programme I've encountered so far that can do this.

Has anybody upgraded to the .216 firmware on their Bold's? I have downloaded it but have not installed it yet. I don't really want to if it isn't a good improvement over .162 because I read on crackberry that the windows live messenger doesn't work anymore on .216. Any feedback on .216? Battery life, speed, browser improvements, free memory etc?

can't comment on windows live 'cos i don't use it.
battery life seems the same, the initial drain seems faster but the last half lasts longer - it balances out to around the same though, 1 - 1.5 days with heavy use. other then that i can't say i've noticed any difference...really very little to report. Web browsing seems slightly faster but a new 'bug' has appeared.. sometimes images and text overlap when pages don't render properly, but that's only happened a couple of times.

Hmm, I think I'll hold off on the upgrade then for a while. I was hoping battery life would improve a bit.

As Assagai stated the battery life is about the same time.

Windows Live Messenger works fine with no problems.
My memory is better with .216. I run now at a constant 42mb of free memory where my previous OS gave me anything between 28 -36mb of free memory.

Yes, I forgot to mention that, there is more free memory - but i can't say i've noticed any real performance boost.

Is it just me or is anyone else noticing that downloads on the Internet Browser aren't as strict (I just downloaded an 8mb MP3 and it went through just fine). I double checked and I'm not using the MTN browser. My guess is that either they've increased the limit or the limit is dependant on the load on the Blackberry servers. I've never been able to download anything more than 3mb before, also got a 4mb zip with no problems too.
