Blackberry Bold Tips/Tricks/Apps Thread

Hi Guys

Got my bold up and running with Gmail...but it seems to be popping the email (ie, if I read it on my blackberry it's not marked as read on my computer).

Is there any way to IMAP the gmail? If so...how?

On Gmail, go to options, Pop/Imap tab, enable Imap, click on configuration instructions, and choose Blackberry. It gives you precise instructions to follow. Also don't forget to delete the current Gmail account before you add this one.

Here is a NB question for the bold on MTN?

My MMS does not work! Its got all the mms menu buttons, but when downloading the normal MMS settings OTA from MTN it arrives, but does not install...

Very irritating bragging with my new bold but cant recieve MMS's... or did i miss something?

Thanks

Just spoke to someone at MTN fourways, who told me that it will take up to 2 weeks for me to get approved (new contract). Why would it take so long to get approved for a contract?

Blackberry's don't use the normal MMS settings - and as soon as BIS is activated on your phone you get the MMS settings along with everything else. In options - advanced option - service books - you should have a MTN MMS service book, if you don't then you can get them sent to you from the e-mail set-up programme.
Has someone sent you a MMS and you couldn't read it?
Also you may need to send one MMS to activate the service on your phone. I just used it for the first time (I didn't download any settings). The MMS was received and I also got a 'welcome to MTN MMS' message on my phone.

It normally takes 1-2 days. Try going to Northgate or one of the stores.
Perhaps they meant they only expect stock in 2 weeks which is why they would take so long.

Many Thanks

Yes i recieved MMS but could not view them,, i do have the mtn mms service book, but have not sent a mms yet, so will try that now,, sure it will work and thanks for the speedy reply....

Also on the NB exhausted subject of what you get billed for.... Would you get billed if using the defualt "maps" with GPS on your phone? As it does not have the maps installed and you always using data to download maps,, is this chargeable? And is there any software for GPS that is worht installing with the South african maps already on device, as to make it faster?

They have 1 left in stock and told me they would keep it for me. I'll try other stores though.

On the MMS if you don't have the service book then it won't work. Get them as mentioned above or call 1555 and they'll help you.
I believe use of BB Maps is free on BIS (any application that came with your BB uses the free service) and on 3G it isn't much of a wait for map data to load. You would be charged for any other GPS service that does download data.
Garmin does have an edition for the Bold but I don't know if SA maps are available for it or not. I personally love BB Maps as I found it to be very accurate. Just make sure you're using 2G/3G mode (from connections - mobile network) so you can take advantage of 3G where available, but don't lose the signal if it's not.

ok anyone using the WIFI feautre on their phones? What i gather from crackberry forums, is that the chappies are talking and calling for free with voice over IP i think it is, when connected to a wifi,, is this a option for us in South Africa,, what do we need?

I also like BB maps,, but to keep it fast means 3g then you have to sacrifice battery life, pity there is no other cheap free options?

Alos my device memory still has 800meg free but the application memory is only like 1 MEG left, whats up with that?

anyone know where i can get a car charger for the bold?
even with 3g disabled i'm still getting 2days tops out of the battery.

Try www.expansys.co.za they seem to have everything. I'm quite used to short battery life, my P990 lasted about the same amount of time. I think it has more to do with the fact that we're using our phones more often now and they have incredible screens/hardware (well the Bold certainly does).
You just have to find a way to work it into your routine. With my P990 I'd just put it in the cradle when I got home, pity they didn't include one with the Bold.

thanks, they do have, bloody expensive though.

n00b question:
If I get a BB Bold from a Vodacom4U store, can I flash it (to get rid of the Vodafone Live! nonsense) and use it on MTN without any hassles? BlackBerry maps, BIS etc will work as per usual? And would it void the handset warranty in any way?

I have a noob question: Does the vibrate and then ring not annoy anyone? A quick google says that the only way to have vibrate and ring (at the same time) is to buy some $10 program which I dont feel like.

Here's a free program that should sort out your problem:

EDIT: in profiles you have to set your ringtone to just tone and tone+vibrate for this program to work.
