Blackberry Bold Tips/Tricks/Apps Thread

What I've done is installed an application called Birthday Calendar on FB. The app loads everyone's birthday into a calendar format and allows you to export it to a CSV file for Outlook import. I then sync my phone's calendar with Outlook's calendar.
That's how I do it...

Thanks

I see the Downloading Updates icon, but when I try to use it, it says I am not registered. Then I register as per instruction and I am still seen as unregistered. Is there something else I should know?

Anyone find a free pdf reader yet?? Any other cool apps out there? Maybe skype through BIS?

man, skype for bb, been wating forever - was meant to be out in MAY! , tried one of the betas, it was terrible, now that skype has been sold, dont know what thats gonna do to the already way overdue release. plus you know AT&T probably putting pressue on rim/skype to NOT release. but imagine a good 'voip' client on a phone with free data!

anyone here heard any rumours on when/if skype or BB is going to happen?

nimbuzz works as a good multiprotocol chat pogram ( incl skype text chat )

Is Nimbuzz free? I use that on my 5800- gf is thinking of the R150/m blackberry from VC. Includes BIS and 120 off peak minutes. Pretty good deal...

the app is free, texting is free, not sure about voice calls tho... from the site:
http://www.nimbuzz.com/en/mobile/

Nimbuzz Mobile free to download and use. Nimbuzz will not charge or bill you for anything. However, since Nimbuzz uses your internet connection, incremental data charges from your provider will apply. We therefore strongly recommend to use the mobile client only with a flat-rate data plan or free Wifi connection.

Upgrading the OS - will that have any effect on service-provider specific things, like Vodafone Sat Nav?

No. Those will all come back with your service books

Cool, thanks. Even on BES? Basically, I can upgrade the OS with a non-Vodacom specific one, and not lose any functionality?

Not too sure on BES but I believe so. However, you will have to reregister your BES service (check with your tech people). I updated last week with the newest Asian firmware (applications 301) and my memory at start up doubled. Not much else changed though.
Only really bother with an update if you're having memory issues (ie. The browser stops working properly after a day and you have to do a battery pull) otherwise it genuinely doesn't have much of a difference. Or wait a month or two for the official release of OS 5.

Have you tried a few OS 4.6 builds? Which is the quickest and frees the most memory? My Bold is running low lately with all the apps I have on it.

I'm on .216 and its been great except that now when I do a hard reset I only have about 15MB App memory.

Just three - the last two official MTN builds (I think the last was 217 or something similar) and I finally got sick of the aforementioned browser issue. Memory is better on 301 but I think battery life is a little worse. My memory at startup is about 45mb (was 25 on my revious build) other than that no real difference. I ultimately uninstalled a lot of the apps that I didn't need and that made some difference.

I still love my bold, but I am getting problems with my scroll. Thinking about taking it in for a fix.

I had to return mine for the same reason took MTN six weeks and they gave me a new unit in the end.
But try this first: keylock or put it off, use something dry like a shirt or cloth and rapidly move your trackball in all directions most excess dirt comes out this way.

Don't take it in unless you have to. Like oronte mentioned they take forever and then you have no blackberry for a month or more. I've had issues too with the f#*+&ing trackball. What worked for me is to take an earbud, dip it in meths (or use pure alcohol) then clean your trackball with it and roll it around for a minute and then let it dry before you use it. This works every time.

The first time I did this was after not being able to scroll down for 2 days and it fixed it for about a month. What also can work is those aerosol cans of compressed air but try this as a last resort as the air is very cold and under high pressure which could damage your phone. Damn I wish I had a trackpad like on the 8520!

It has not been scrolling down for 3 days already, usually I move it around rapidly for a time and then it works again for a week or so. I have tried spray but it didnt work and I scrolled so much that my trackball is brown because I started sweating on my hands, and I think that made it worse...

Will try the meths and earbud, thanks for the tip

Thanks. Not really having any issues, I was just curious. I reckon I'll wait for 5.0. As for reregistering on BES, no problem, seeing as I'm the tech people. :)
