Hi Can anyone please help with my Blackberry express server ?

This is what i have done.

I have an Exchange, Active Directory and Blackberry server.
All on different hardware.

Ive installed BES successfully with no issues and both the Admin and User desktop portal is working

I then installed the blackberry Desktop software and it can communicate fine with the BB device.

I then added a user from the AD to the Blackberry server via the administration portal.

When i access the desktop portal from the user's machine the there is a browser snap-in which then communicates with the desktop software on the local computer which then installs a desktop icon on the device.

Then i then send a message from the Admin portal to the user the message goes to both the device and outlook. (This all happens via USB)

So all looks fine.
when i set the activation password from the User portal it asks you to activate the device from the advance setting "Enterprise activation" i then enter the details and it wont activate.

then on a different note, i have opened the BB port on out ADSL FW to port forward the data to the BB server, and the FW's IP is dynamic via DynDNS

Nowhere has it ever asked me to set the BB's external address which is XXXX.dnsalias.net

So it will never know where to request mail from ?????

I'm confused please help if you can.

Thanks

[EDIT]

Just to add something.
I found where the hostname to the BES is supposed to be set.

When I telnet into 127.0.0.1 3101 it connects.

But when i telnet into the IP is does not connect.
So it seems like its running in some kind of "Off Line" mode and the connection is not listening on the IP but instead it listens on the localhost ?

Hi SBSP

Your setup should work ok, but you do not need and should not use the BB Desktop Software, as all connections will be handled by the BES server. Does the BB handheld you are trying to activate have either BIS or BES activated on the cellular network ?

Haz

Not sure what BIS is.

But yes it does have mail via vodacom

If you have a BB data package active on the sim, you should be able to activate over the air. Try disconnecting from the USB and activating on the handset again.

Here is the thing to do, remove the Desktop Application from your system, does not tie in with BES. Can cause conflicts with BES.
Also what needs to be done is port 3101 opened on your firewall for outbound traffic.
There is a utility in the research in motion folder to test the port and if it can successfully communicate with the BES server.
Once all those are in place and working correctly, try activate the device again, if it fails what you might have to do is a security wipe and try activa again.

The path on my W2K3 server is:

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Utility\BBSrpTest.exe

And welcome, paddyjohns :)

Thanks for all the help sofar.

The issue is how will the BB device know to which domain it has to connect to.
Do i need to set this on the BB device some where ?

Nope - that is handled by the BB server. All the device needs is the email address and activation password. If your BES server is set up and running correctly, it *just works* :)

That is the reason for the activation on the server. Once you set the activation password or key it send a email to the users mail box with all the encryption details and hidden deep in that email is all the details for what BES server to connect to. If that email is not received the activation fails.
So...check and make sure SRP port 3101 is open for outbound traffic.

Ok then i have 2 problems.

The BES server is wont for the hell of it listen on the ip it only listens on 127.0.0.1 3101
So the test fails, if i run the "BES config" utillity and to a test on 127.0.0.1 3101 it works fine.
I can also confirm this with netstat /a -n the IP and port 3101 is not listed.

So to try and resolve this i'm uninstalling it and reinstalling the server.

Then the opther problem is i'm in a WAN and our FW is controlled in europe. and our company domain is controlled by mu coluges in europe MX records and domain name is registered by them.
We are connected to them via a diginet line.

So locally i have an ADSL router , so i have set the server's gateway to the local ADSL router (This works as i can browse the net with no proxy settings)
In other words the BES server is handing out wrong connection information, assuming "[email protected]" = company.com where as its actually company.dnsalias.net to enter our network.
So how do i tell the BES server the hostname is not company.com and its compant.dnsalias.net ?

Cus its getting the domain name automatically from active directory ??? eish!

Did you follow the manual when setting up the server ? The BES server makes a connection to the Blackberry network and this connection enables comms for the devices. You need to test your SRP connectivity on completion of the re-install and make sure this is working. You do not need to specify the hostname anywhere.

My BES is still not working.

I'm at a point of vandalizing my whole server room!!

I cant even get support or get someone to come and install for me.
I litrally installed the BES server like 10 times already.

Anyone know who i can contact ?
our LAN environment is not standard its a bit complicated and our email domain name is not the same ip as our external IP which is dynamic which is complicating things for me.
And nowhere can i see where to set either the BB device or the server to connect via our dyndns account.

Hey there!

thanks for the PM's and offering me some help, I came right, there was nothing wrong with my install, i just had to enable BES on my BB device.
I guess i tried to be too technical and over looking the obvious , Hehe!

Do any of you know what the charges there will be from over seas ?
I normally travel to Paris , London and the Netherlands ? or will it be the same? someone here told me it will be a 120 bucks/Mb?
