Thought I'd share this.
My wife and I both got blackberries this weekend and waited about 2 days for BIS to go active on both phones (this in itself is a long story). Mine was activated first so I set up my gmail and tried it. I kept getting the error mail that says your email will not be delivered to your blackberry, because you need to enable IMAP and then validate your account. I did this about 20 times but it just didn't work. A bit sad that my email-designed phone cannot receive email I waited patiently. My wife got her BIS service active today (after pulling the battery out of the turned on phone on recommendation of the 1555 call line) and just went ahead and got gmail working...
I realised that phoning help lines won't help for this one and started poking around. It seems to me that since I had "Advanced IMAP controls" active before all of this, blackberry BIS thinks IMAP is disabled - the Gmail server probably does some slightly different things for advanced control that blackberry doesn't expect or want. I just disabled advanced IMAP controls, re-added my email account and it works flawlessly now.
I've not bothered testing if it will break if I enable advanced controls again, since I prefer not to jinx it just yet, but I'd say to anyone who sets this up anew, disable advanced IMAP controls.
This is a bit of a pity since using Thunderbird can now potentially go ahead and download many thousands of headers on a new PC setup, but I just use Google Chrome for web-based Gmail now (Apps and normal) since they got hierarchical labels (labs), a good chrome plugin for email notifications (finally a desktop popup and sound for kubuntu) and blackberry doesn't seem to manage thousands of IMAP headers just fine on initial setup.
