Hi,

Hoping someone can assist.

I am helping someone, or should I say trying to help someone with the above mentioned setup.

Person has a BlackBerry on a Vodacom contract.
Does not want to use the BIS service as its not secure and wants to use the BES setup - hoping my terminology is correct.

User has a Windows domain/network environment. With SBS 2003 and Exchange 2003.

Connected to the net, using an IPCOP firewall, dyndns address and telkom ADSL.

We have downloaded the Blackberry professional software. Which is now installed on the server.

I have followed all the help in the user manual as per the setup instructions and installation instructions. Creating the besadmin user assigning read as rights etc etc..

The problem we having is getting the phone to sync or connect with the server.

That is not explained at all in the user guides.

Has anybody done a setup like this before? Or know of anyone done a setup like this before?

Do we need to activate something on the contract to get the phone to be able to connect with the server?

Can it work with an ADSL line and dynamic dns?

This might be a very very dof question...but does the user actually have BES active on his/her line? If BES is not acitve on the line then the device will not be able to be loaded on the BES server that you have setup.

Nope not a stupid question at all. I am not sure if he has any of this enabled on his contract.

I will contact him now and ask if he does. If he does not I will ask him if he can please get it activated.

You get the following two types of Blackberry services offered by Vodacom.

BIS: Most people will have this service for their Blackberry. It is aimed at individual users that are not linked to a corporate account. Email etc will still work but is is not synced over the air. Client has to do it manually with data cable.

BES: This service is aimed at Corporate companies that has a Blackberry BES server installed ontop of their mail server. This will enable the user to receive email using their corporate email account by the company. Also offeres more security that can be set up by the BES administrator and over the air sync. What he sees on his device is what he will se on his work PC.

Thanks for the explanation.

Turns out he had BIS active on his contract, he changed it to BES would should be active in 24 hours.

So now that we know its active, or going to be active, how do we get it to sync with the server?:o

mmm i have never done a BES server setup myself. Perhaps 082155 might be able to assist? Or if it is a business account try 0821940. They normally deal with BES.

This is not possible guys he needs a BES server , this involves getting the actual BB server on the premises which includes licensing.

Will also depend on the amount of users on the server, BB uses 3DES encryption

There is a BES Server software that you can download as a trial i think. Think you are limited to about 5 users on the server though...after that is used up you then have to purchase the full version of the BES server.

Yes this is not free, this is the core of their business as well i.e enterprise . we have our own BES server setup for test purposes on a normal machine.

I think they looking for a long term solution.

Yes we definitly looking for a long term solution.

We have Blackberry Professional Server software, which we can, according to Blackberry's site, use for up to 30 users. The software is registered and legal etc. I registered the software, with a "pin" code provided (Pin code was on his blackberry box under the IMEI number.) They mailed us a registration key etc from that.

This is the software that is installed on the SBS 2003 server.

I am confused now....@ VD....does the Professional Server Software not support BES?

What's Included?

* One free BlackBerry® Professional Software for Microsoft® Exchange or IBM® Lotus® Domino®
* One user included, expandable to 30 users (at additional cost)
* The ability to expand beyond 30 users to any size deployment by purchasing a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Trade-Up Key and updating to a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server
* One complimentary BlackBerry® support incident that can be used to access BlackBerry Technical Support should you require assistance

That is exactly what we have!

So now it is just a question of waiting for BES to go live on the users line then you should be able to load him onto your setup you have there. Correct VD?

.
