Hi

Couple Q's/confirmations re: blackberry service and not sure were to get info but some v3g on this forum :)

1.) International Roaming - UK (London)
I think I remember seeing an article saying that blackberry roaming charges were realistically priced. :) could this be confirmed/denied.... i.e. when I am in London, what can I expect to be paying for blackberry email using my SA sim?

2.) I notice that my GPRS is always on since I have installed balckberry, which kind of makes sense but I assume it connects to a APN, is this the internet APN? i.e. if I am online is my device still capable of receiving email via blackberry? or does the blackberry device connect to a "blackberryAPN"?

3.) I am correct in saying "ALL" blackberry traffic (incoming email and outgoing email) is non billable? i.e. you pay your monthly sub for blackberry and thats that?

Think thats me for now :D

Hi,

1) Need to confirm.

2) Yes, you connect via a Blackberry APN to your mail server.'

3) Yes, all mail is included. Anything over the BB APN is not priced per byte. If you do other browsing, you'll pay normal data rates.

What about PIN messaging? (ie blackberry to blackberry)

Would be interested to hear about roaming rates (as per qn 1) as well.

EDIT - When is the 8700 going to be available here? And support for RIMS Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk as seen abroad?

Thanks :)

Just got this back:

The roaming charges are our normal 3G/gprs roaming charges. The difference is that the data sent to a Blackberry is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller as it is always basically text data (although encrypted and compressed). Even attachments are processed and a resultant data stream is sent. Add to that, that with the "auto more" feature switched off, you will only get the first 2k of TEXT from any message recieved. All this makes for very light data usage and therefore a lower bill. The actually roaming rates are the same, just the data usage thats lower ;-)

And this:

Pin Messaging: Part of the flat rate blackberry.net APN. The traffic basically flows from handheld, to carrier, to BBI, to carrier, to handheld.

8700: Some are in the country, but no clear date on availability yet.

Thanks for the feedback. Was hoping PINs were free here like in most countries - we use em a fair bit.

Not even an unofficial word on the Messenger side? ;)

If you send a lot of PINs look into Blackberry Messenger if you havent already - its a nice little chat application.

Hi

Just for future reference. Switching on a South African phone with roaming and selecting the Vodafone UK network, does not allow blackberry to work. I assume that the APN is different in the UK or something else is wrong. I get my calls and text's, but the blackberry icon shows a cross through it, and therefore assume the wrong APN is selected.... correct? Why is this not standard to make roaming easier?
