I am deciding to get me a blackberry phone with blackberry service or a laptop with 3G
The pro and cons of both speak for themselves, but I am more interested in this Blackberry "service"

I noticed that they have unlimited email and internet using this service
So now i bring my own Blackberry device, take a R10 a month "bring your own phone" deal and add to that this Blackberry Service. Thats all good - no problem

Now, if take that SIM, pop it into a 3G modem and surf the interwebs and get mail using a PC, will it still be free?

no, only on device browsing is free. it's about the handset, not the sim.

I see the Blackberry website offers software for some of their models -

It says unlimited on device browsing, coz it all goes thru BB's servers and is compressed to hell and back... Hence the "free"... On your lappy it doesn't connect thru the BB apn, hence the not "free"...

I once had a few R100's bill from VC, as my Curve had defaulted to another apn after an upgrade... Got my bux back, glad to say!

Just wanna make sure it works in SA - else theres no point...

ps. how much do you normally DL/browse on your Laptop tethered thru your BB?

Tethering is built into my BB Storm, no additional software required (but the BB Desktop Manager must be running).

Let me put an end to this: No. No No. Blackberry service is only free on Blackberry phones and only free e-mail on certain Nokias and HTCs. That's it, you will pay normal rates on a PC.

You can test this quite quickly, just do a check on your current usage, then open some pages while your phone is attached to your PC/Notebook.

Check for the usage.

There _will_ be usage, but at R2.00 per mb.

If you must then get a Data plan.

I have 100mb data plan for use on my Nokia 5800 and it is R79.00 if I remember correctly.

I heard this on the crackberry forum, totally untested by me.

When you tether (use blackberry as a modem) communication goes through a different port than on divice browsing.

Now, apparently there is software available which will fool your bb into thinking the data it is pushing is on device browsing, instead of being a modem.

using the sim in another device will incur full data costs.
