Howzit everyone.
Was wondering what speeds everyone else is getting on blackberry since the fix.
Mine has been averaging 180 to 200 Kbits/s a second.
For the last day or so its terribly slow again with the speed test timing out and no websites opening.
This is on a Bold.

Today was horribly slow! especially from 1pm onwards. couldnt even load any sites.

This is with Full 3G signal wit a Bold on VC... Using the R600 for the contract I should rather have bought Magazine subscriptions. I can understand why the Blackberry contracts are unlimited

Erm thats a decently good speed considering BIS is capped at 350 or so.

The Vodacom network cannot handle the huge uptake of customers signing up for the New Blackberry 8520 deal @ R149pm total monthly cost which includes the blackberry service and 120 off peak minutes.

Ah yes the elusive Blackberry network "FIX". Worked so damn fast for about 24-48 hours after they "fixed" it .... now it's almost back to the way it was before the "fix" .... like with everything at Vodacom these "fixes" last a few days before someone goes and tampers with them. I would just love to see one of these fixes last for more than a week, that would be quite novel.

My speeds right now with MTN:

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 320.38Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 414.09Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 20.97Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 80.9Kbits/s

Disappointingly slow the last week or so. Usually it averages quite bit higher. This time at night I should get 800-1000kb/s. BIS is not capped at 350kb/s on MTN.

It's a shame really.
I love my Bold but the gets really slow sometimes.
I've been getting a friend to do speed tests at similar times to me on MTN and if the results stay the same (MTN is always faster) I'm going to buy out the rest of my contract and switch.
Its just sad that Vodacom get to make money for giving me crap service.

So what is the consensus? Is a switch to mtn necessary for normal bb usage?

Browsing on my BB Storm is a joke. I am lucky to get 30 Kbits/s. Web pages take ages to display. My Nokia 6110 Navigator is about 10-20 times faster. Very disappointing - my conclusion is that Vodacom is unable to provide a decent Blackberry Service beyond e-mail.

What he said.
Email seems to work fine.
Browsing was brilliant just after the fix but is dropping of again with more users joining.
I use my old Sony phone with 3G to browse lately.

In a nutshell, the performance I get on my brand new Blackberry 8520 can at best be described as worse than dial up.

Back in the day my 28.8 US Robotics Sportster Analogue modem performance was better than this.

This service is oversold and will only result in more unhappy clients like I am.

Even html formatted emails take a while to download the embedded images, quite sad actually.

We actually have to pay for this service?

If I provided this service I would not even want to give it away because of the embarrasment factor

VC your BIS service sucks

While it's not as bad as it was it's getting there.

Vodacom had to go and make BIS essentially free with their latest special apparently without considering how all the new users would [negatively] impact the service.

If you are going to offer buffet at an eat as much as you like for a once off payment then you are going to have to ensure that you provision enough food to cater for however many people you are selling tickets to.

I guess the hope was that you would be turned off by the queues lined up and quietly go and sit in a corner and watch everyone else eat without complaint.

Poor analogy, but one does kind of feel ripped off.

To be honest I have not even tried to download anything except for Opera Mini which took its own time to download, but just browsing pages is becoming quite frustrating, with the signal more on GPRS than EDGE and even when showing EDGE it is just as slow as GPRS.

Which application are you using to produce your speed test results?

Edit:
Download speed is: 20.7Kbits/s
Max speed is: 34.21Kbits/s

Upload speed is: 6.33Kbits/s
Max speed is : 23.6Kbits/s

It may say 20.7Kbits/s but it does not indicate the lag where it sits for a bit with no progress being indicated

On a BB 8520

We have a uptake in blackberry devices and a lot of towers in Gauteng now has EDGE. Are we going to wait another 3 months before Vodacom comes to the party and upgrade the link?

yeah it's pretty bad again. Some sites timing out and speed test won't even connect right now. It's funny how VC bragged about their BB Link upgrade when it seems all they did was bring the service up to barely usable level.

I wonder how long it'll take this time to get recognition of the problem?

Did they fix this, or is it just a better timing? Quite a difference since previous test.

Are you saying that you are happy with 51 Kbits/s download? For me anything below 200 Kbits/s is unacceptable.
