Germany - FIFA president Sepp Blatter believes cruise ships could be the solution to the problem of a lack of hotel beds for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"Cruise ships, which offer places for around 2 000 people, could be brought there," Blatter said in an interview with the Deutsche Welle TV station.

However, the idea could only be a partial solution as Durban and Port Elizabeth are the only host cities that could accommodate such large ships and World Cup organisers are facing a shortfall of up to 15 000 beds.

The World Cup takes place in South Africa June 11 to July 11, 2010.

And Cape Town cannot accommodate cruise liners ??

just throw up some corrugated shacks. Give them a taste of the real African experience! :D

The real problem is when Danny Jordaan, from PE, gives PE 8 WC matches, in a city thats just completed its first 5 star hotel and can barely meet FIFA's basic requirements in terms of hotel rooms for MATCH.

Talking of PE's venue.

I usually avoid the part of town where the new stadium is located because I don't consider it very safe in addition to it being damn ugly and run-down area. The roads in that area are so bad that I have concerns of wrecking my suspension each time I need to drive in that area.

I just can't figure out why they chose that location - maybe the intention was to miraculously transform it into a great area, and if this is the case then they're fast running out of time.
There may well be a good explanation, and hopefully someone in the know can enlighten us here.

OMW!
Picture it ... 15 000 sea-sick people!

Bwaaahahahahahahahaha!

This is not the flipping Caribbean numnuts!

But it still does not explain why they say Capetown is not suitable?
Maybe to busy?

It doesn't say that . They just left it out.

As stated above, Cape Town can accommodate close to 20,000 beds in the harbour and V&A, with close to 6,000 beds already confirmed.

Are people blind or just stupid.

Not blind or stupid - I was querying the poor journalism..

It's not a question of leaving CT out - they specifically stated that only Durban and PE could accommodate cruise liners - which we all know isn't true.
