Blatter pissed off!

By 2010, the police intend to have an additional 200 thousand officers on the streets, part of the strategy is to create "safe zones" that will basically be access controlled areas with pubs, nightclubs, etc.

Cool! Like the "green zone" in Iraq. Only small parts of the country safe for the tourists... God forbid anything happens to the tourists! Meanwhile the actual residents and taxpayers of this country have to wait around til 2010 when the police force gets beefed up.

Event security in South Africa has always proven top notch and that is not the worry.

The concern needs to be around developing a standard of security by implementing basic changes during and after 2010 e.g.

1. All suburban train stations must be allocated 3 security guards each during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, if that station is within 20km of a major city centre/node. After 2010 2 security guards per suburban train station regardless of its location.

Major train stations to be allocated 2 security guards per terminal during 2010. This excludes security around the entire complex at major train stations.

Similar standards for taxi/bus interchanges and at certain locations higher standards where the risk is perceived to be higher. Five security guards at major taxi/bus interchanges as a minimum, increased to a suitable level during the 2010 FIFA WC.

2. The city of Cape Town has great security within the CBD and would deal effectively with it by simply increasing capacity during 2010. The Springbok parade through the city centre proved its ability to handle capcity within the city centre.

3. Within my area we have at night at least two police vans patrolling the area:
- firstly its not exactly a high crime area with or without police patrols
- this should be implemented in all sububs, at night when getting home at about 2am its feels good to have police patrolling the area and checking up on randoms walking the streets at night
-80% of crime in CT takes place in 2-4 sububs or area and this is no exaggeration. The solution is to tackle these areas, however since the SAPS is a national competency the city has very little power since Selebi does not believe we have a crime problem

4. Increased CCTV cameras and MOST importantly improved response by polic.
Why are Kirstenbosch criminals never caught? Why on earth do we never catch and arrest them?
- they could run down the mountain and be caught at various points
- they could run up the mountain and be caught on foot or by using 1 helicopter to track them down

5. All major highways patrolled on a 24/7 basis by a couple of police/security vehicles driving up and down in "unmarked" vehicles. Sort of undercover.

...when the police force gets beefed up.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how much fatter our police force appears to be lately? Their group life administrators must be k@kking that officers might actually run after a suspect or two and drop dead of heart attacks
