South Africa has received Fifa president Sepp Blatter's vote of confidence in its bid to host the 2020 Olympics

Blatter told media at a briefing in Sandton yesterday: "I think the International Olympic Committee president made a good move after he witnessed the success of the World Cup in South Africa in the first week. It is also time that Africa, specifically South Africa, organises the Olympic games. It is very positive. If a country is able to organise Fifa's World Cup, it can also organise the Olympic summer games."

Blatter said that next year's IOC session, which will be hosted in Durban, was "the first step towards the opening of South Africa, in this case, to the Olympic movement. I will fully support Durban to host the Olympic games in 2020".

thats good news

I've had my doubts about us hosting the SWC, but i'm very pleased to say I was wrong, and i think SA did a fantastic job hosting (see Lance, it is possible to admit when a person is wrong)

We've now hosted very successful:

Rugby World Cup
Soccer World Cup
Cricket World Cup

next step, Olympics !!!!
 
If it comes to SA, which City?

CT or Durban?

Keep in mind the stadium needs an athletics track ... AND:

Ample conditions for:

- Long distance running
- Long distance swimming
- Dam/river for Rowing (Midmar?)
- Olympic size pool + Diving boards
- Olympic gymnastics location

Not to mention a CRAPLOAD of accommodation.
 
Why Durban ?

I suppose they really need it for economic development but man... they like to make a lot of work for themselves !
 
Here I thought SA was going to die a very slow and painful death after the World Cup, but the Olympic Games would be by far South Africa's greatest achievement when it comes to hosting if that can materialize. Afaik the bidding only takes place in 2012?

Midmar is so far from DBN...Inanda Dam (Hilcrest) or Hazelmere Dam (Verulam) ???
 
Cape Town will likely have 70% of the required sports venues in place by 2013.

The achille's heel being no athletics stadium, but as we have seen in London, a temporary athletics stadium is the way to go. Athletics outside of the Games rarely attracts large crowds even for the world championships.

The rail system in Cape Town means while the event can be compact, communities from Belhar to Khayelitsha to Bellville to Athlone to Phillippi can all be included by using their existing venues.

Cape Town stadium would host Football (finals) and Rugby 7's.

Cape Town would need

1. Athletics stadium
2. Tennis arena
3. Indoor arena (about 6,000 seats)
4. Temporary indoor arena (about 12,000 seats)

Newlands stadium can apparently be temporarily covered to act as a large indoor arena.

yip. Green Point would be a major Olympic Cluster.

Football and rugby 7's at the new stadium
Triathlon around the urban park.
Marathon swimming around Granger Bay
Road Cycling finish as per the Argus
Tennis as the tennis precinct (new arena required)
 
We are one of the very few (in fact, the only?) country who can say that they hosted the Cricket, Rugby and Soccer worldcup. ;)
 
Durban has long since made their motives known that they want to host the olypmics. The moses mabidha stadium was designed in mind that it could be used for the event.

England beat us to it sadly. :(

I really hope CT or Durban win in 2020 though.
 
I wonder if the attendance would be good though, the soccer worked because we have a very big black soccer following.

What are the average international visitor numbers for the Olympics? But then again i guess we done extremely well with the Ipl which didnt feature any local teams.

edit// i guess my initial comment is a bit idiotic, but you have to admit its odd that people get so excited for the olympics (me included), its actually a pretty crappy show if you think about it.

Cape Town is in the process of rebuilding the Newlands swimming pool which will be fit for the Olympics

Pretty much the only advantage Durban has over Cape Town is Moses Mabhida running track.
