Bleeding from the ear

What can cause this? Ear infection, ruptured eardrum.. Any more sinister problems?

Rather go to the doc for him/her to have a peek into your ear. Can be something stupid like a little pimple in there or it might be something serious. Rather be safe than sorry.

how much blood and what colour (dark red, light red etc), any other discomfort or issues with the ears?

Oh good, both would suggest a serious problem I reckon. Still, I think a doctor would be a sensible idea.

ENT doc will suck the crap out, put him / her on anti inflammatory's and send him /her on his / her way.
