Blocking ads will force online publishing to change

Maybe not look like a fscking christmas tree and being so intrusive its a bloody prostate exam?

How long has AB been around? So far there has been no significant change whatsoever.

While I agree with adblock I think people who block ads should be forced to pay a sub fee (if Google would implement) otherwise the owner of the site has no obligation to provide content for "free" and should block people.

Ad supported with subscription ad free version.

it is because advertisers cant determine how many of their ads gets blocked. Also up to recently it was the more savvy users who installed adblockers, but now everyone is catching up with chrome etc. I think advertisers are getting more stats about ads not reaching audiences.

Anyhow, i was forced to install ad blocker on my windows tablet for mybb. The ads on top is ok, but the giant background ad on the sides is unacceptable on touch screen browsing, i cant scroll properly without triggering the ad popup, so now i killed it. If advertisers werent so f'ing annoying with their ads popping up and blocking my view i would be less inclined to block it.

If advertising stops, many websites will have to go subscription or go under. The internet culture currently for many people is get as much as possible for free (downloading movies, music, software, getting news). If there is no advertising for many sites there will be no business model. How long will myadsl.co.za last without advertising income (or are you willing to pay a monthly fee?). Advertising is a necessary evil.

And when they become too evil, with ad content that expands over the text when you move your mouse over a banner on the side because you want to get your cursor somewhere else or whatever (as experienced on news24 at times), you install an ad blocker and happiness.

Of course the sites will go "but we have no control over the content, its provided by google or such" or reply is... "enjoy adblock you spazzes who cant control your own websites".

Or an issue I had at an employer:

"Hey Employee, why are you visiting thousands of websites a month?"

"Not me, I visit 2 forums and 3 news websites"

"Oh yes you do, look at this list"

List shows 1000s of sites and I figure out is the banners and such and try to explain that but they cant understand it. They had little issue with my amount of data used, its wasn't a lot, but even that I'm sure the ads contributed to. They moaned with the youtubers and facebookers lol

Adblock gets installed and Employer/Employee bliss is restored

Agree, sometimes I find ads irritating as well, especially the ads which will fill the whole page like on this site(guess they're called background ads or something like that.) But you really have to live in a cave if you don't see advertising at all. If you think about it where ever you go there is advertising. Drive on the N1 from PTA to JHB you have to really keep your eyes closed for 100% of the time not to see advertising. Switch on your TV, Radio, get your daily printed paper if you still read those as you get the news for free on the internet(although ad sponsored). Your community paper. Must they now all stop advertisers. Advertising can be overdone, but then it is still your choice to visit those sites or buy those newspapers and tune in to that radio station.

The world is run by advertising and there is no way to avoid it. Those nice prices MyAdsl for competitions has have to be paid for somehow. Sport & Art would't be around without advertising

And yes I don't like irritating popups either, but so I don't like the ads which our local municipality sent us with their bills.

Lets face it without advertising their would only be government propaganda telling us how great our internet speeds etc are. If we would have internet at all.

I just live with it and ignore them at my peril, or if they attract my interest I'll click on them.

Oh and ask your employer how do they get their business. I guess only by word of mouth.

But yeah the next big thing is that publishers start charging your ISP for the content you are watching who of course will send you the bill.

Oh and before you ask I don't work in the advertising industry.

The problem is on most sites adds are just too intrusive. Adblock it is.

Yes agree, but you will punish the sites which are not intrusive. The internet would be an empty space without ads. No free Gmail, no Facebook, no YouTube etc. The money has to come from somewhere, those sites cost money to run, and they are a business after all.

If you really despise ads so much I challenge you to quit all your free internet services which are ad supported.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Personally, I do not mind seeing one or two adverts on a web page, provided they are placed neatly and do not annoy me. What really annoys me is a web page that will be full of adverts...one at the top, one in the middle of the post you are reading, one at the end of the article, one that automatically pops up when you click a link on that web page, or those redirect adverts as you are about to download a file.

Yup Agree hate popups as well. lucky this site does not employ them. RPM do not ever think of using them.

You can allow adverts on the sites you choose with Adblock.
