Bloemfontein FTTH Thread

I've still been following the Frogfoot website and the date is still as erratic as anything, so I commented on one of their FB posts about fibre going live somewhere in Bloem and asked for a bit more clarity on when Bayswater is going to be up and running. Reply didn't do much to cure my eagerness for this whole thing, I was basically told there's no confirmed ETA and to just keep checking back on the website. Meh... I want fibre already!

Quick question, not sure who will be able to provide the most accurate answers, but here goes :P

SADV vs Frogfoot (down/up speed is the same)

1) Why is SADV speed limited to 100MB while Frogfoot goes up to 1GB line?
2) With SADV speed limited to 100MB, will it increase in the future?
3) Why is SADV's lines so more expensive than Frogfoot's lines? See below a few examples of ISPs:

Rocketnet: SADV 100MB line - R1495, Frogfoot 100MB line - R995 (50MB line is also R100 cheaper for Frogfoot)
Cape Connect: SADV 100MB line - R1445, Frogfoot 100MB line - R1095
Home Connect: SADV 100MB line - R1168, Frogfoot 100MB line - R888 (200MB line for Frogfoot is R988)
Cool Ideas: SADV 100MB line - R1219, Frogfoot 100MB line - R1009 (Frogfoot 200MB line is R1299 which is only R80 more than SADV's 100MB line)
Afrihost: SADV 100MB line - R1217, Frogfoot 100MB line - R1017 (Frogfoot 200MB line is R1297 which is only R80 more than SADV's 100MB line)
Vox: SADV 100MB line - R1099, Frogfoot 100MB line - R1023 (Frogfoot 200MB line is R1249)

4) Why is Vox's packages on SADV more in line with Frogfoot's packages while other ISPs the price differences is so big?

Also, if we went with SADV to install Fiber in our complex, is there a way to get Frogfoot to also connect their line to the Complex (using SADV's infrastructure)

I'll try my best to give some perspective:

1) Some of the FNO's (Frogfoot, Vumatel for example) offer 1GB download speeds but only locally, so you won't get 1GB speeds when downloading something internationally, but let's say you download from Steam it will run locally at 1GB. International is generally capped at 100mb, same thing goes for the upload speed. Even if it is rated 1GB up, it will be limited to 100mb speeds.

SADV most likely doesn't deem the need for 1GB line speeds, although @pinball wizard can provide some feedback as to why they don't do residential 1GB connections (yet).

2) Have no idea if their speeds will increase, again something that @pinball wizard can perhaps elaborate on

3) See number two above

4) Good question, remember that Vox bought Frogfoot, so it's essentially their FNO division. Perhaps they have a gentlemen's agreement between them to offer similarly priced packages on either network.

I'd say if Frogfoot gets the necessary permission from SADV, then they could use the same ducts to run their fibre, but obviously it would require that FF install their own termination point at each unit in the complex. Chances of this happening though is HIGHLY unlikely as they are direct competitors with each other, so I doubt that FF will do something such as this. If you guys went with SADV, then I'm afraid you're stuck with them for the foreseeable future :)

I don't recall there being anything in the contract which prohibits this, but as StoneCold said, they probably will have to route everything in their own ducts etc.
I also doubt your HOA/BC would want strangers working in the complex again for a couple of weeks to install more fibre when there's already fibre available.

1&2. We are testing 200mb ISP packages at the moment. Historically we have had very little interest from the ISP's on our network for such a product, so we haven't made it available. Our network is capable of running 1Gbps speeds, but there are no plans for that at the moment.
3&4. I cannot comment on Froogfoot's wholesale (the line rental they charge an ISP) pricing.

2. As above :)

3 4. We won't allow anyone to share our duct at present. None of the FNO's will. This opens a huge can of worms when it comes to maintenance and upgrades on the network, as well as opening up our infrastructure to unforeseen damages. The FNO's also closely guard their IP (intellectual property in this context) in the handholes and we don't really want anyone peeking in them.

Sorry, missed that one.

The short answer is no. Another FNO cannot piggyback on our infrastructure, As a complex, you would need them to install an entire backbone within the estate, basically duplicating ours.

@pinball wizard - Thanks for your replies in this thread! Was just wondering if you maybe know what's causing the delays with Universitas suburb? It's been getting delayed for pretty much the entire 2019 and I have a friend that's eagerly waiting to sign up - apparently they already have the fibre in the curb, which has been the case for many months now, but the "go live" date keeps getting postponed.

There is some issues with wayleaves. It seems to be quite political.

Hi!
Maybe a stupid question, we live in a complex in Pellissier. Today the contractors finished splicing. (The little white box?)
So I heard next up is putiing in the ONT.
Does frogfoot also do this? Do they send britelink? Should I contact my ISP(afrihost) to send someone? Can anyone help

The next step is waiting for your area to go live. Your ISP will a arrange for a contractor to install the ONT

This ^^^

So keep checking the coverage map for your complex to go live. As soon as it's live, contact your ISP.

Any particular reason you want to go with Afrihost @Storm10 ? When I signed up for fibre at the end of last year, Afrihost didn't have the best packages (especially when it comes to unshaped data).

I was with afrihost with LTE. So decided to stay with them for fibre now. I know a lot of people complain about them but so far I only had good service? And I can't change now, already pre-ordered
Hopefully it will show live on the system quickly cause the guy that did the splicing said they are done here now? Or is there more to be done?

Well just remember it's not as easy to switch between ISPs with fibre as it is with a service like ADSL. Hopefully you won't have any issues though!

If the splicing is completed in the entire complex, it won't take long. Start getting impatient if a week goes by without any updates :)

Frogfoot is still run as a separate company, operating their own network and vox is just another isp on the network. Competition commision will now allow them to have a gentlements agreement. It's the same for Telkom and Openserve.

Thanks everyone that responded to my post, really appreciate it!

I'm happy with SADV's network so far (using Cool Ideas), just sad that the packages on the ISPs is little more expensive than compared to on Frogfoot's network.

Just curious...I always seem to get about 90-95% of my download speed (sometimes I get 125-150% upload speed) and the down speed is somewhat consistent with most of the other Speed Tests I have seen from other users as well, even on other line packages, why is this and why isn't the line always 20mbps? Not complaining, just curious seeing that fiber is a lot different/faster than DSL.

No connection this morning in Bloemfontein, Langenhovenpark - Frogfoot network.

Log on router reads “ppp2 Timeout waiting for PADO packets”

Anyone know anything?

*Edit: Frogfoot has logged the outage - looks like a Bloemfontein node is down.

Cool Ideas (on SADV) was down last night 23:30 as well, not sure when it came back online, but it was online when I woke up this morning.
