Did any of you guys see the Top-Gear episode where the 3 guys bought a car for $1 000 each and took a road trip in America? They painted slogans on their cars and got attacked by red-necks at a garage :D

Why are you guys making such a big fuss about this?

Someone fell off a mountain/cliff and died. How is that making us look bad? You guys are so worried about looking bad that something like this is driving you all mad. People climb, people fall, people die. Such is life.

Now back to the soccer dammit :D.
 
The thing that's making us look bad is shoddy journalism. The 14yo was not killed (unless one of the family pushed him down). He died. There's a difference.
 
How does anyone that took the cable car up table mountian fall off the top? The kid surely was arsing around.

Then you get the American media.... O...M...G. They are beyond stupid, I mean I go onto CBS news and what do I see? A sports news title headed "U.S vs U.K match ends in 1-1 tie" :wtf: I felt like bashing my head in after seeing that :sick:

Football is college level there. So the guys who report on it are prolly low level reporters. However, college boys stood up to one of Europe's strongest teams. :)

I think the world should not have encouraged America to return to the WC. They're going to be taking the gold pretty soon. The best in everything. Let's hope the Chinese don't get heavy into football too. :)
 
Skeleton gorge is a pretty junk decline, even though it's a beautiful section of the walk. It can be very slippery even in mid-summer, I've never been up it after heavy rains but i wouldn't recommend it for a family stroll in that situation. it's a heavy price to pay for negligent miscalcution.

With the 16 year old girl...nvm it's not worth it.

I did find it funny how about a month before the world cup it was announced that about 30 000 Americans were coming to South Africa and three days later, 12 000 prostitutes.

@gdiza -- I thought it was fair reporting by most of the newspapers I've seen. It simply telling the story without spin which is how the news should be. No angle other than reporting. At least with the popular US papers (Msnbc, NYT, Washingtonpost - yes I went to see their angle on it).

I live 100 meters from the edge of Table Mountain and regularly run the trails frequently (been doing it for +- 5 yrs) and there is seldom a week that goes by without me seeing the rescue helicopters hovering over Skeleton Gorge or elsewhere along the mountain. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a week I'll look out the window to see the chopper, only to read about some tourist/local who has fallen or slipped to their death. :erm: Its one of the most well marked and signed trails (bottom and top) so its just another accident. Its also the one section of the trail run, that I literally slow walk down(slippery even in summer) if heading to Mclears Beacon.

Trail "hiking" / "running" is dangerous. Simple as that. It actually freaks me out quite often when I reach the tops paths on the mountain and then start one of the ascent trails with hiking gear + backpack only to see tourists/people doing the same with: 1) flip flops 2) no survival gear (the weather can change within an hour with strong gusting winds + one is at altitude , shorts + tshirt does not cut it 3) no water / food or communications gear :erm::confused:

Sad story but yeah.. another victim of that trail.
 
I think a lot of tourists get lulled into a false sense of security because table mountain is such a popular tourist destination and it is quite busy.

This is more sad than stupid though.

Maybe Zille need to get escalators fitted to the trial, in order to minimize accidents. :rolleyes:

@gpe and others - isn't there some warning to let people know that the trial is dangerous?

If its so dangerous why don't they close it ? Or atleast have minimum requirements before you can climb such dangerous trails. Have someone patrol these trails and if you find people disobeying the rules escort them down and fine them. IMO if you have 1 incident every week its too much ... especially for such a popular destination.
