Blu-ray 3D specifications finalized, your PS3 is ready!

Yeah, being new tech it will take quite some time still before it's mainstream, but i actually think those prices aren't too bad comparitive to most new current HDTV's of that size from the big manufacturers.

Better than OLEDs, at least :D

Yeah and considering the free headache included and the gimmick factor, they're a steal! Just the thing for chumps with lose change on their hands. Also a good reason to upgrade those Sony Bravia Z/V series from last year.

Hype, hype, hype. We've had 3D for decades now. I found an box from my old Creative Labs GeForce 2GTS Deluxe which came with 3D goggles for the PC, circa 2001.

Samsung's model will apparently be cheaper still - just can't find a link now with the product model.

I will admit that during 3D movies, at the cinema, I've had to remove the glasses for a few minutes every now and then because it does seem to strain my eyes. Not quite a headache, but definitely not something I would choose to do for more than a single movie.

Since you've conveniently arranged for my posts to be deleted, let me rephrase.

Even though you're calling potential 3DTV investors "chumps", i'd have to disagree with you there, good sir.
This is technology that is extremely lucrative from a gaming perspective. When you're thinking of upgrading your current HDTV set, and were expecting i.e. to pay 32k for it, you would have to effectively have to pay an additional 2k on top of that for the 3D functionality. Yes, R2000 is a decent amount of money, but when compared to the 32k you're already willing to shell out for an upgrade, i for one certainly won't mind shelling out an additional 2k. If it becomes obsolete in 5 years time, i doubt i'll have sleepless nights over it.

Also, you may be prone to headaches while watching 3D content - i'm not, and i know i'm not alone in that.

I did no such thing. I reported you for throwing insults.

To invest in something suggests you are purchasing something whose value is expected to grow. As you probably know electronics only depreciates. Secondly first adopter electronics (1st gen) is usually overtly expensive and often quite bug ridden. So I disagree there already. A person who expects to invest in something which inevitably depreciates on a daily basis is behaving like a chump. This is not an insult at you or anyone else here.

R32K is very expensive for a set. I would expect the highest quality blacks or a very huge TV for that price. 3D tech is very gimmicky. As pointed out by me, we've had 3D capable hardware sold since the beginning of the decade and somehow till Avatar came along, it never caught many followers.

It will likely cost R22K next year and possibly R11 in 2y time. I believe 3D is gimmicky and uncomfortable. Until it comes out in a comfortable form with no hit in quality in terms of contrast and size (and price) I think it's not worth it.

Indeed, and calling potential 3D investors chumps is in NO way insulting...Gotcha.

There you go with the insults again...

These are the going prices for brand new sets. You'd have to wait for a proper review on the 3D-sets before shooting it down. Personally i think it will be comparable to whatever's out there in the same price range. Oh, and contrary to popular belief, 3D from a gaming perspective has been looked forward to for quite some time now, certainly long before the advent of Avatar.

Yes, the depreciation of tech. Thank you for that little Economics101 lecture.

I saw Avatar in 3d this week. It was the first 3d movie that I ever saw, and I was dumbfound. It is awesome. The very first thing that came to mind was 3d porn. I would LOoooooooOVvvveeEEEee to see that :D

Well, personally i can't wait to for this. Yes, BR movies will be cool but the feedback on the demo gaming stations in NA have been overwhelmingly positive.
And the glasses actually look decent this time around. The way some people have been going on about their aversion to wearing glasses for 3D content you'd think they'd have to stuff a giant porcupine up their a$$...

@PeterCH : It's a personal opinion, you probably don't have a good experience with 3d content ? is it more invasive than immersive for you ? I find surround sound and high volume levels uncomfortable, hence my preference to watch movies at home...the general concensus is that it's a wonderful technology, adds to the immersion of movies...there's being a cliche that quality of video can be horrendous as long as the content is compelling, true (success of youtube is a good example)....but 3D gives another level of "WOW" when you watching content...the 3 main types of content is movies, the natural world (animal, sea and nature content) and sports...Then there is the signficant moves in the game industry to provide 3D experiences (namely Sony).

On the technical side, 3D is not a new technology or requires early adopters...teh pricing by the end of the year is going to be marginal compared to standard HD panels ... It might be tough for existing HD owners to justify re-purchasing hardware until there is quantity and quality content to drive that decision making, for the rest of us, it's much easier....tbh, I would purchase even if only F1 was broadcast in a HD 3D format...

I think that your personal dislike for 3D is clouding your overall judgement of a long-time format being offered as quality content and accessible to the mainstream.
