Blu-Ray DVD tipped to win

No doubt all the pirates are waiting in eager anticipation.. :)
 
Don't think blue ray will be affordable anytime soon anyway. One needs to get a HD tv first anyway to get the benefit.

Anyways, why is it that people around the world are always fighting about standards? Why can't they put together a joint team from both camps, and combine the best of both???? It really boggles my mind!

No. Blu-Ray is not just about video. I've read predictions of data storage capacities of up to 200GB per disc. Granted, that was a while ago so estimates may have changed.

Before the world Cup i believe broadcasters need to get HD capable. Buying a non HD capable TV would just force you to upgrade later. I use my tv to connect to my pc too so HD will certainly make a difference right now for me. Samsung has reasonably priced LCD HDTV's atm with DVI inputs etc.

I'd love that amount of storage but I don't think players let alone writers will make economic sense for normal consumers anytime soon.
 
As I understand it, the fundamental difference between blu-ray and normal DVDs is the blue-violet semiconductor laser. Most of the existing technology remains essentially the same as convential CDs and DVDs. That wavelength of light is much shorter than the red light currently used, hence you can pack more data onto a single disc.

I'm hoping this means that we aren't in for a massive price shock when we start to see them hit the shops but if past trends are anything to go by, we certainly will.

Looks like HD does not have too manny of the studios on board doubt they will make it even if thay are cheaper.
 
Have you guys heard about Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD)...
Apparently these disks will have the capacity to store around 200gigs but will eventually reach 3.9 terabytes PER DISK:eek: and has a transfer rate of 1Gbit/s.
It's still in the research stage but 200gig disks are expected to be released in
June/July 2006 :D :D
