Blu-ray player comparison: price and functionality

Think its time to start stressing about my lack of depth perception with the very near adaptation of 3D TV :(

Wonder if they can fix it yet with laser surgery.

The Sony PS3 is software upgradeable to Blu-ray 3D !

This is because the hardware already meets the data transfer requirements of Blu-ray 3D.

Are the others upgradeable ?

That's a good question because the players will need to send TWO 1080i signals simultanously at 60hz each. The hardware of standalone players may not have the power to do this. The PS3 has 7 cores so could easily process and transmit the two streams.

HDMI version 1.4 shouldn't be required for 3D either because all it really adds is networking ability plus some more colour depth

Then again customers having to buy more hardware would be more profit for these electronic companies so they may just say it's a requirement.

My advice to anyone thinking about buying a nice new flat screen and interested in 3D should hold out a little longer until the official hardware requirements are released

Why is it that prices differ so much from brand to brand? Is there anything extra that the ~R10k offer or one is purely buying a name? I must say I'm impressed with myself 'cos I've managed to wait for so long; and I think I'm still going to wait before going shopping. I have been caught out before where I bought something only to find something better was around the corner. The way I see it is that this "technology" is evolving rapidly, some day later it will stabilise and when this happens, prices will have declined, features would be packed, etc. The TV market will also have to work closely with these guys, e.g. about a year ago I was advised to wait for HDMI 1.3 and now it seems there's some feature that requires 1.4 to function optimally. Frankly I don't think I'll take part soon. Unless my employer buys me a BD laptop or something...:D

My thoughts with technology (I'm a bit of a gadget freak) are: buy what you want when you want it... there'll always be new products on the market and you just have to accept that the purchase you made was the right one at the time. This will minimise the buyer's remorse :-)

rather get a ps3 then it plays games and blueray...

Agreed, there is always something new coming out

First came Plasma, then LCD, then LED, next OLED, followed by ????

It's never going to end or slow down so jump on the digital bandwagon now

Any suggestions on a 1st time BD player? I was a early adopter of DVD and back then my Pioneer cost me +-R3000, now you can pick up a DVD player for +-R300 (and they have more features than my Pioneer had :) )

I have a lack of depth perception too, let me know when you find something out about that laser eye surgery.

Blu-ray pricing is a fail... on the players and the discs. If they keep the prices at these levels it is going to kill this format.

PS3 is your best bet because it's the only player that seems to be future proof. It's also a multi functional media center that you can play digital content on, i.e. photos, music mp3's, divx movies, etc.

+2. Why buy a R11k Denon?? Blu-Ray is Sony developed as well, so stick with the brand who dished out Blu-Ray licensing to other manufacturers.

PnP have the Philips BDP-3000 for R1800 - not on this list, but it works very well and has decent features.

I asked the audio visual professionals down the road from me the same question... especially as their shop carries ones for up to R20 000 as well. They said that DVD and Blu-ray players have a huge amount of quality loss between disk and player and player to cable. As much as 70% quality loss on some players. You don't notice this until you have actually watched a good quality system. How true is that I have no idea? 70% quality loss seems exaggerated. I would certainly believe there is quality loss, so I guess better players would minimise this... but I am thinking the problem would hardly be noticiable.

I own the Sony BDP-S360 but heck...I only paid R3000 for it a couple of months ago :O

Good unit, work every time all the time, great picture quality, great sound quality, some small annoyances though (no eject button on the remote, startup time around 30 odd seconds).

Doesn't do DivX or any of the other popular media formats which is a shame really...

I'll go check out the Philips aat PnP tomorrow. It's got some decent .net reviews.
