yo i was wondering when are blu-ray units coming out... and im sure they will be pricey... but any way what is the maxium disk size im gig's tho??? i was told they can go up to 50 gig's and i thought thats a little more startrek then 2006/2007

They are available in the USA already, but currently only single layer disks are being released, so they only hold 25 gigs.

There are apparently some problems to overcome to mass produce the double layer 50 gig disks

But HD-DVD disk are currently leading with 30 gig double layer disks

There are much higher capacity disks out there, but they are industrial disks requiring machines costing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to run

Also :"TDK recently announced that they have created a working experimental Blu-ray disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side (six 33 GB data layers)."

Universal has pledged to HD-DVD ... BlueRay is a dead duck.

Well :

"HD-DVD:

Universal
Paramount
Warner Bros

Blu-ray:

Sony Pictures
Paramount
Warner Bros
MGM
Disney
20th Century Fox"

So blu-ray has a lot of support

thanks... but im confused... why the f$%# can't they just make a universal disk? sure in the next 2 years we goind to need those extra sizes... but like why can't they make blu-ray the standard... why prolong something thats aged??? why continue with "red ray"???...!but if anything sony are going to make dam sure that this blu-ray thing takes off coz they have spent a shyt load of money on it with the whole ps3 thing going on... i don't know about you guys but if sony see's something new that will make a success they'll make dam sure it will go all the way. eg ps2... it was the first dvd paying consel and to this day it still is able to play the lastest games well... the psp which is so awesom i got one myself but when it was first anounced people thought it would be a flop and that it was not going tomake a profit... but sony seemed to have pulled though and now there are millions of peolpe that own one and have never looked back... it was the first handheld consel that could play games that the ps1 could only dream of... sure there other companies that come a long with something better but thats a good year or two later and as a result have some what lost the market to sony... and i've heard that a hd-dvd player will cost $500 and to me i would rather go with sony and get a ps3 for the same price and still be able to play some killer awesom games at super high res!!! to me sony are the only company that takes the biggest risk's but at the end of the day are the big winners. yes most of you think the ps3 is over priced but just tyhink what you getting i mean it really is the way one the future, unlike the xbox 360 which still uses dvd rom, now that aint very next gen to me coz in a few years the disk's will be maxed out while the ps3 will be sitting there smiling and laughing at the xbox coz they still got like 10gig's of space left!!! so i think i'll end my speech off with LONG LIVE SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reason there are two is because competing companies have all spent millions developing what they think is best.

hd-dvd players are currently $500, but blue ray players are $1,000
ofcourse both are useless without a HDTV, or if you want to skimp a HD-ready tv

The PS3 is going through a lot of problems currently and word is the first runs wont be able to play blue ray videodisks at near full resolution. There is also a large shortage of the diodes needed to make the laser required for it.

Also the Xbox360 will get a add on hd-dvd drive soon
