eThekwini municipal manager Michael Sutcliffe has likened the international Blue Flag scheme to an "apartheid" system that creates separate beaches, the Mercury newspaper reports.

"The Blue Flag team have, through their actions, created two categories of beaches, much like apartheid having black and white beaches. The majority of people here don’t go to the Blue Flag beaches," Sutcliffe said at a briefing with the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry yesterday.

He was speaking on the controversy over sewage-related pollution on the Durban beach-front.

Yes it does create 'two-beaches': One up to international standards and one not. People are free to choose where they want to swim. The link to Apartheid fails me - stop trying to rely on the imagery of horror re: apartheid and try link that to the Blue Flag system.

Admit the mistake of pollution and focus on fixing the problem. Don't attack the messenger, the system and the institution for your failings.
