Hi there. Wondering if anyone can help with a question. I have my desktop linked to a Billion ADSL wireless router via a LAN cable. I use the wireless for my laptops etc, and the desktop is essentially the network server - i.e. I have the printer attached to it. The router is, obviously the gateway to the net. Now, I'm reshuffling rooms in the house, and can't be bothered to wait for Telkom to come and install an extension. Equally, I'm not keen on routing cables up into the roof and through walls.

I am think of leaving the router in it's current location and using Bluetooth dongles to link the desktop and the router instead of a LAN cable. Will this work? If so, what hardware should I be getting?

Hope this is clear.
Thanks in advance....
Mike

Why not just get a Wifi card for the desktop? should be better than bluetooth.

It should, obviously dependent on the distance etc. but it'll definitely work better than bluetooth.

I'm just thinking how you'd get bluetooth to work on a Billion router in the first place? I don't think they have an option for it.

I agree with Syndyre, buy a Wireless LAN (Wifi) adapter for the computer and set up the wireless connection that way.

I was wondering that too, Wifi would be cheaper and easier anyway, all you need is a PCI Wifi card.

bluetooth won't work, since the router wasn't designed for it. It was designed for Wifi.
And yes, it will work through walls. Unless you have a 3 story house, with lots of concrete & steel between the floors, or a house that's longer than 100m (even 200m), it won't be a problem. Chances are, if you enjoy the freedom, you won't even bother getting telkom to move the cable. Rather spend the money on a stronger antenna on the modem :)

Thanks all for the replies.
I am sure the WiFi cards will work through walls because I use the laptop regularly at the other end of the house. It seems to make a difference how many walls the signal must pass through, which i suppose is obvious.
What I was unclear on is how well it would work if we had 3 computers all using the wireless signal concurrently - the desktop as a server, my laptop and my wife's laptop.
I also am a little (probably unnecessarily) paranoid about using the wireless for banking etc and usually use the desktop via a direct connection to the modem.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get low profile/flat LAN cabling in case I do decide to route the wires through to the other room?
