My friend is looking to upgrade to a 3 Series BMW, and said he'll sell his 2006 118i 1 series with 105,000km on the clock to me for R100k.

I'm keen on taking it. I've seen the car, and it's neat - very clean.

Do you guys think it's a good buy?

Other 1 Series for this price range are older and have at least 150,000km+, so in my opinion, the price is good!

Pro's:

1. The km's def decent for the price.
2. You know the driving habits of your friend, therefore know how it was put through it's paces.

Con's:

1. I have seen cheaper, but those could be people who reaaaaallly drive them hard.
2. It's 7 years old, out of motorplan I'll assume already, BMW's burn huge holes in pockets from maintenance.

Opinions based on me having considered owning a 1 Series too before, decided against it.

I just traded in a 2007 120i with 65,000km with extended motorplan for R130,000. ****ing sharks. :(

I drive a 2009 118i, and since it's still in the motorplan, no worries yet.
It is an awesome car, but slightly heavier on fuel than you'd imagine - consider I get 6.2 l/100km on a C200K (1800 + SC) compared to the 118i that's a 2.0 liter with 100KW, which gets 7.4 l/100km on a very good cycle. In the city it pushes 10-12 l/100km.

On the highway it accelerates pretty well.
The R100k tag is very good... autotrader lists it for R125k and then you get 120k-170k on the clock.

But.... at the end of the day it's a BMW out of its motorplan and you can expect some expensive services (BMW are very eager to replace anything that isn't 101%).... R3-5k for a small service (the F1 service while you wait) and R7-15k for a big service.

You got taken for a ride :D
It's worth in excess of R150k if you look at 2nd hand prices and compare it to R130k for >100k mileage

Ask him if you can borrow the car for a day
Take it too BMW and see what they offer you as a trade in on a 3 series

Trade-in prices will always be lower than 2nd hand/private amounts - the dealership takes on the risk and cost of reselling it and therefore needs to put on a margin to bring the selling price in line with a private sale amount.

Dealer trade-ins...on the upside, BMW gave me R15k more than Audi was willing to.

the older 1 series i felt was under powered.
Compare it to the new one and its a completely different ball game

1 series not a bit gay for a man? Bit of a ladies car you ask me. Why not a 3?

I'm in the market for a newer car - Currently driving an old Golf 3. My budget is R150,000 max.

I wasn't looking at BMW's at all, but considered my friends car for the low price he offered me for the mileage.

I was originally looking at a Golf Mk5 or a Honda Civic...

I doubt I'll be able to get a decent 3 Series in my budget though.

I got a decent 320 d for 160 k at bmw them-self if u really want a 3 series the best would be to go to bmw tell them what model u want and what ur willing to pay

Admittedly it was my wife's car, but I would've taken it in a heartbeat if it had Steptronic. I travel a lot for work, the 2.0 litre would've been nippy enough and a practical size for city traffic also.

Hello all, Merry Christmas to the Masses and a happy new years !! Recently bought a BMW 118i 2005 model as my 1st car, mainly due to affordability and the need to get around was quiet urgent. Got a few questions if anyone can help me on it would be much appreciated !!

Some history (what I know) on the car...
142 000km on the clock, just been for major service and wheel balancing and alignment done as well as x2 brake calipers on front wheels. Interior wasnt cleaned when I got her sadly as it was abit of a rush. Paid 60k in total, is that worth it ?

I'm experiencing the following and not to sure what it can be...

1. Load, not frequent cranking/bone breaking noise coming from the steering when I turn it, only sometimes but now more than normal. What can this be and what causes it ??
2. Aircon - A/C turned on when idling or at a stand still if feels as though the car struggles for fuel. It jerks in a manner that feels like it misses a beat.
3. What's the best cleaning products to use on the leather fabric interior without damaging it but removes stains easily??
