Its a decent car...

What price is it?... what condition is it in?

1995 316i should be around R28k.

They're a bit underpowered, due to the relatively small engine so if you want to thrash it be prepared to pay LOTS of petrol, but for cruising they're pretty efficient.

My first major service was a little pricy as I had to replace the clutch kit but otherwise services have been relatively well priced for the service you get which was always my biggest worry. Also to mention the free back massages you get while waiting to receive your car are amazing and sure make me want to book my car in for the next service asap.

As for fuel efficiency it is very economical to drive and could be compared to most 1400/1600/1800cc modern engine fuel consumptions.

ToxicBunny is correct in saying the 316i is a little underpowered but I think thesedays we would rather try buy vehicles that are low maintenance and fuel efficient.
Bottom line, drive economically and you will save, pedal to the metal you will pay.
I have however managed to clock 208 km/h going down Kliprivier Road in the wee hours of the morning

Overall it's been a great value for money purchase.
Check the service history, anything under R28k should be a good buy on a '95 model. If service history is up-to-date and vehicle well looked after then look into it. The last thing you want to be left with is major repairs on a bmw as if the car is in a bad condition you will pay.

the car is for R20 000-00, and the only faults is as follows:
It smokes when pulling away
The alternater bearing makes a chiiiii chiiii sound - the bearing needs to be replaced
The handbrake takes very high, I think the drums must be replaced.
It has 318 000 kms on the clock, but it does have fsh/rwc.
Aircon doesnt work

Sorry my friend...if you are still thinking of buying it then you have too much money to burn...I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!!

Sounds like a clump of crap. Those could be some serious problems and that mileage is insane. No wonder it is R20,000.

Dude, by a bicycle. You'll save a heap, it's more economical & going uphill it will be faster. Seriously though, on the lower end of the market R5k can make a huge difference. Save/beg/borrow/steal a little more and buy something that'll end up being a much smaller headache.

LOL! 308 000km  car is in need of a overhaul asap. Would be a good deal if you were someone who knew BMW engines and could do the overhaul but then again it's very likely it has also been in a accident at this point.

I have however managed to clock 208 km/h going down Kliprivier Road in the wee hours of the morning

Somehow I doubt that car could make it to 208km/h in standard form on a straight road.

Pay R10,000 at the most. Engine needs overhauling (region of 10k), aircon (anywhere up to 5k), brakes (who knows).

I wouldn't go for that particular car anyway. It is becoming a firm favorite with highjackers.

Perhaps a downhill ...? I hit 220 on the speedo in my old Corolla RSI on quite a long downhill ... and on a straight you'd be lucky to see 200 on the speedo

I wouldn't touch that car. I have a friend that drove the same bmw, same model too. He had to overhaul the engine a while back, cost him near R10k, and he didn't even do every thing. On that mileage you will get some serious trouble in the near future, believe me, I've seen it. And be prepared to pay a lot for any spare parts.

E36 Engine is very strong, if someone looked after that car even 400k is fine,
Rich and some poor paranoyd people alwayse complain about the mileage.
person drove this car to 300k and all of the sudden engin is gone becoz you bought it. this is bul *****.
E36 316i i had drove more then 350k, E46 318i recently i sold it mileage was over 250k
those Engine are very strong,
If engine is not right for this car then you will find lots of them around R20k to R30k.

I have a 1992 316i.

I can tell you as follows:
1) Just replaced the brakes, and they still don't feel so great. You really have to press hard for them to work
2) Car is lacking quite a bit of power. Once you are cruising, you wont notice it, but acceleration is pathetic (and aircon being on makes it worse)
3) Engine is nice and quite compared to some other cars.
4) Power steering is quite heavy
5) Petrol tank is 60L. On long drives I get around 600km off a tank. In the city, I get around 300-400km a tank.
6) Side mirrors are difficult to see with.

Let me know if you have any other questions...
