Like Gnome, said, it's a 1.8l, but from my understanding the kompressor is a supercharger and nor a turbo, same with the C200, also a 1.8.
The 323i is a 2.5l straight six. Very nice car although a little bland interior, but luckily taste differs. BMW's are very nice cars, but do yourself a favor, join different car forums and ask as much questions as you can.
BMW's have specific parts that need replacing, like any other car, for example control arms, bushings and on older models the cooling systems. Read as much as you can before buying to make an educated purchase.
IMO, you will have to look far and wide to get better value for money than Volvo's. There's not a lot of cars that depreciate as fast as a Volvo so you can get really great deals buying second hand. For example, I saw a 2006 S60 T5, thats a 2.5l 5pot turbo with 190 odd kw and 350nm. Lots of extras with just over 100k on the clock for R139000. Now if you go do some searching you will be able to get a very nice car with low mileage for a very decent price.
Larger luxury Sedans, especially the BMW 5 and 7 series is bargain buys. NEVER settle for retail, always haggle, if they don't want to budge, move a long. There's better deals out there you just have to search for them. People are of the opinion that the larger more expensive sedans will break the bank when out of motorplan. This is true to a large extend, but you should'nt be a retard and make use of a dealer in that situation.
Good luck hunting bud.
