BMW 323i

R280k for a 1.6 u are nuts

Like Gnome, said, it's a 1.8l, but from my understanding the kompressor is a supercharger and nor a turbo, same with the C200, also a 1.8.

The 323i is a 2.5l straight six. Very nice car although a little bland interior, but luckily taste differs. BMW's are very nice cars, but do yourself a favor, join different car forums and ask as much questions as you can.

BMW's have specific parts that need replacing, like any other car, for example control arms, bushings and on older models the cooling systems. Read as much as you can before buying to make an educated purchase.

IMO, you will have to look far and wide to get better value for money than Volvo's. There's not a lot of cars that depreciate as fast as a Volvo so you can get really great deals buying second hand. For example, I saw a 2006 S60 T5, thats a 2.5l 5pot turbo with 190 odd kw and 350nm. Lots of extras with just over 100k on the clock for R139000. Now if you go do some searching you will be able to get a very nice car with low mileage for a very decent price.

Larger luxury Sedans, especially the BMW 5 and 7 series is bargain buys. NEVER settle for retail, always haggle, if they don't want to budge, move a long. There's better deals out there you just have to search for them. People are of the opinion that the larger more expensive sedans will break the bank when out of motorplan. This is true to a large extend, but you should'nt be a retard and make use of a dealer in that situation.

Good luck hunting bud.

I disagree, got a mate who works for MB Century City, before the Blue Efficiency was released , all C180's were 1.6's

2008 model is 1.6: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_M271_engine
Latest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_C-Class#C-Class_crash_test_ratings

Might still be some 1.6s around. It's hard to tell if the same standards are applied here as in other countries. Point remains C180 is a POS :p

To clarify they are supercharged (kompressor), I made a mistake before (as 1lum1nat1 said). Some of the Mercedes engines have recently switched from superchargers to turbo chargers, apparently not this one. My mistake.

BMW is a better buy. The BMW inline 6 is an especially great engine. I don't much like BMW look, their image or the fact that they are hi-jacked but I have tremendous respect for their inline 6 engines. They are all without exception some of the best engines money can buy.

If I bought I6 I would buy BMW. If I bought V8 I would buy Mercedes. I4 is tricky, there are a few good ones around...

Thing is, I have no issue with BMW, except 3 series is locally made. I was in motor manuf industry for a good few yrs, altho they have good stds, I still stand by fully imported. Audi rox

Locally made C class is rated best car in jd survey and factory won many awards for least amount of faults in the world.

So how do I go about asking for discount?
They are offering R190 000 for a trade in on my 2008 2.0 Golf FSi with 41 000 km's on the clock. Does that sound right? I owe the bank R160 000

Another question I have is do I have to put in a deposit? Does it help in any way?

Just want to add this BMW Im looking at is a M-sport model. If I check on the BMW website its retailing for R408 000 without the extras (nav, sunroof etc)

Find similar car at similar price and bargain with them. I did same comparing car in jhb with ctn, jhb cars are generally cheaper, greedy ctn salesman wouldnt budge, so i shipped it to ctn, costing me R2k to ship, but saving me R40k on the price.

I see the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is locally made, won J.D. Power and Associates quality survey in the medium car category, well ahead of Audi A4.

In fact, overall Audi brand ranked close to BMW

PASSENGER VEHICLES: (PP100)

1. Mercedes-Benz (103)
2. Honda (121)
3. Audi (133)
4. BMW (138)

Yep, I never mentioned merc in my comment and be aware that manufacturers have a certain %of imported components.
As I dealt with Daimler in PE as well, I know they have top notch quality, however u pay for it ie. R280k for a 1.6.

I remember the JD power ratings, but i cannot recall if the line you posted is the brand, as a large number iof those cars across all brands are imported

Thanks for an on topic post fluiter.. really appreciated.
How much did you get it for?

Merc C180, can pick up a low mileage one from Zeda, 30 000 KM for about R280 000. Much rather have the merc.

True that! But if you are not a Merc kinda guy and you end up comparing the BMW to anything else then just go with the Beemer ok?

I asked for a discount - the manager is saying NO and they are claiming some other customer has got approval on the vehicle at full price (he was dealing with another sales guy not the same as the one I'm dealing with).

The sales guy I'm dealing with is saying I must make a deposit if I still want the car since he's not sure how much longer it's going to be available.

Would have been nice to get advice from you guys rather then guys talking about Merc's, Hondas, Audi's and what not in here.

It is a tactic to get you to buy or maybe not.
But the best things come for those who wait.

Car salesman are the dodgiest fux alive, they try to create an impression that a demand exists for the car, forcing you into an impulse buy.

Ive done a reverse on them, stating that another salesman is pressurising me into buying a different car, forcing them into an 'impulse' sell.
