new-bmw-8-series-rendered-based-on-official-teaser-2019-bmw-m8-included-118004_1-830x553.jpg

After BMW spoiled us last year with plenty of concepts and anniversary models celebrating its 100 years of existence, the Bavarian manufacturer is not showing any signs of slowing down. During this weekend’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Germans plan on bringing a legend back to life, unveiling the much-anticipated BMW 8 Series Concept.

Every BMW fan out there will be watching the villa on the shores of Lake Como in Italy this weekend, waiting to see how the 8 Series was re-imagined after 20 years of absence. Until then though, those of us who just can’t wait for the official unveiling to take place will have to make due with renderings, such as the one we’re showing you today.

Inspired by the teaser released last week by BMW, the digital manipulation showcased in the video below seems to be striking pretty close to home, even though it shows just a side profile of the car. The artist behind this work, Jan Peisert, decided to take us through the whole process instead of showing us just the end result.

Not only did Peisert provide a rather interesting take on what the upcoming 8 Series Coupe might look like, but he went a step further and tried to offer a glimpse into what a possible M8 could look like, bi-color wheels and everything included. And while things definitely look enticing, we’ll have to wait for BMW to actually show us its Concept before we can start judging the looks of the upcoming 8er.

The new model will also arrive in Convertible and Gran Coupe guise later down the road, creating a new model range that will take on the offerings of Mercedes-Benz and its S-Class Coupe and Convertible models. Inside the cabin, you’ll find levels of luxury that will mirror those found on the 7 Series, with a slightly different design to give the 8 Series its own character.

Under the hood we’ll find a range of 3-liter straight six engines as well as the ubiquitous 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 for the 850i models. A BMW M8 is said to be in the works as well, but official confirmation is yet to come. Nevertheless, since the 8 Series is scheduled to go into production next year, if the M8 comes to fruition it will definitely have the same powerplant as the upcoming F90 M5 with over 600 HP and all-wheel drive included.

The BMW Group is using the 2017 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este to unveil the BMW Concept 8-Series, the essence of a modern-day BMW coupe wrapped up in an enthralling design study. The study car will serve as a taster of a forthcoming BMW model - the new BMW 8-Series Coupe, slated for launch in 2018 and part of the biggest model offensive in the company's history. The NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy sees the BMW Group aiming to significantly increase sales and revenues in the luxury class, and the BMW 8-Series Coupe plays an important role here. "The number 8 has always represented the pinnacle of sports performance and exclusivity at BMW," explains Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Harald Krüger. "The forthcoming BMW 8-Series Coupe will demonstrate that razor-sharp dynamics and modern luxury can go hand-in-hand. This will be the next model in the expansion of our luxury-car offering and will raise the benchmark for coupes in the segment. In the process, we will strengthen our claim to leadership in the luxury class."

The BMW Concept 8-Series reveals much of what is to come

"The BMW Concept 8-Series is our take on a full-blooded high-end driving machine," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. "It is a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other. For me, it's a slice of pure automotive fascination."

Interested to see how the actual production version looks like in 2018.

Yes, it’s happening! BMW M8 confirmed (and teased)…

BMW recently took the wraps off its new Concept 8 Series model, which serves to preview a production version due in 2018. And now the Munich-based automaker has confirmed that an M8 high-performance variant will top the range.

After providing a glimpse of a camouflaged, “early prototype” version of the upcoming M8 as part of the support programme for the Nürburgring 24-hour race, BMW released a statement confirming that its engineers were “working flat out on the M model”.

“The conception and development of the standard BMW 8 Series and the M model run in parallel,” explained Frank van Meel, president BMW M Division.

“The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”

Interestingly, the Bavarian brand also confirmed that a race-spec car (to be dubbed the BMW M8 GTE) will spearhead BMW Motorsport’s return to Le Mans.

“The BMW M8 GTE development programme for our Le Mans comeback is in full swing,” said BMW Motorsport director, Jens Marquardt.

“Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE the anticipation is that much greater still. We can’t reveal any pictures yet, but I can promise you that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular. We are planning an initial roll-out for the first half of this year and are looking at giving the car its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.”

The next BMW M car in the pipeline (now that we have officially seen the M5) is the M8. Our speculative renderings, produced exclusively for Cars.co.za by a Cape Town-based artist, provides some insights into what the performance derivative of the 8 Series will look like.

The artist's impressions were created using official photographs of the pre-production test units, with surfacing and details influenced by the BMW Concept 8 Series that was unveiled at the 2017 Villa d’Este Concours.

While using the images of the camouflaged car as a base reference allows accurate portrayal of the proportion, volume and stance of the final production car, certain details, such as the carefully concealed door surfacing and "air breather" vents, are open to interpretation. Expect a contoured carbon roof and carbon bootlid spoiler along with M-specific door mirrors and bumpers plus quad-exhaust tailpipes.

It’s worth mentioning that although new BMW design chief Jozef Kaban joined way too late (Feb 2017) to influence the overall style of the new 8 Series, his new head of BMW M vehicle design, Domagoj Dukec, may yet have an impact on the now-familiar M-car look.

So, instead of a somewhat samey, samey airdam and front bumper design seen on all the current M cars, including the just-launched M5 F90, an all-new design that takes cues from the latest BMW concepts may be lurking beneath the swirly patterned prototype. Who knows? What's certain is that the new M8 will be a wide, elegantly proportioned, yet muscularly surfaced GT that promises to add yet more shine to the well-loved 8 Series moniker.

The 8 Series is expected to go into production in 2018 with the M8 surfacing around a year later. Details on powertrain and dynamic tweaks aren't available yet, but in all likelihood, we'll see the M5's motor transplanted into the M8. That means 441 kW and 800 Nm of torque sent to the ground via an xDrive (all-wheel-drive) system. The system has a built in manual override button that turns it into a purely rear driven car as well.

BMW is also developing a convertible version of the 8 Series, which will no doubt carry over to an M8 Convertible after the coupe.

New M8 GTE racer will see the Germans take on the likes of Ferrari at Le Mans

Ferrari, Ford, Aston Martin, Porsche and Corvette, you have a new challenger: BMW.

Yep, the Bavarian marque is heading back to Le Mans and endurance racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and North America’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with this, the M8 GTE.

It’s the racing version of the upcoming BMW M8 road car, giving us several hints as to what it’ll look like when it’s unveiled at the LA motor show in December.

We’d like to think this GTE’s craterous bonnet, huge front spoiler, bloated side skirts, ginormous rear wing and Tetris-spec carbon diffuser will surface on the road car. We have a feeling however, they won’t. Boo.

That slatless kidney grille that improves airflow into the engine will definitely be more slat-y on the production car. However, we know the roof line and design of the front and rear lights will be carried over.

The engine up front is a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8, here turned down to 500bhp to comply with the regulations. The cylinder block and head are taken from the production engine but the power it produces is instead fed through a sequential, six-speed racing gearbox.

There’s lots of clever tech incorporated into the design and manufacturing of the car to improve its performance. The engineers have used clever processes such as extensive use of ultra-light CFRP components, topology optimisation, 3D printing and rapid prototyping to make the car lighter, more effective and efficient to produce. As such, the M8 GTE weighs in at 1,200kg. Just check out the wing mirrors, too. They may look like they’ve been left on a barbecue for too long, but are actually crafted around how the air deforms to benefit aerodynamic performance and therefore speed.

Taking the baton from the M6 GT3, the M8 GTE is BMW’s Motorsport’s halo car. It will be the first factory BMW to enter Le Mans since 2011, and with Toyota all on its tod in the LMP1 hybrid category, the inclusion of another German firm into the GTE category could mean that Le Mans in 2018 focuses more on GT cars. Not a bad thing.

It’s set to make its racing debut next January in the Daytona 24 Hours before embarking on parallel WEC and IMSA campaigns. We can’t wait for the M8 GTE to hit the track. Nor for the road-going BMW M8, either…

BMW 8 Series images leaked ahead of reveal later this year

BMW's new flagship coupé has previously been spied testing in both coupé and convertible forms; it's due to go on UK sale in November

Images of the new BMW 8 Series have leaked ahead of its reveal later this year.

The flagship coupe was only spotted last month in camouflage form as it continues testing, but now BMW blog Bimmerpost has published two leaked images, showing the production version's front and rear.

The front three-quarter shot shows the car is reminiscent of the 6-Series coupe and with smoother lines than the Concept 8 Series, on which the production version is loosely based. The rear's LED lights have also been toned down from the concept car.

Due to be produced in coupé and convertible forms as a rival to the two-door Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Bentley Continental GT as well as their drop-top siblings, the 8 Series will go on sale in the UK in November next year.

BMW's upcoming flagship model will be a two-door coupé version of the 7 Series saloon, in much the same way that the 4 Series and 3 Series are related, but it will get a significantly more sporting design. Large trapezoidal exhausts at the rear and intricate headlight clusters with familiar BMW motifs inside link the car to the rest of the range, despite the brand's aim to separate more upmarket cars' branding from the rest of the line-up.

There will also be an M Sport variant, already spotted testing, with a more aggressive front bumper and sharper exhausts. This also offers the best insight into the look of the following M8. Earlier last year, other camouflaged variants were seen on the road with more subtle wheels and smoother bumpers.

All variants of the coupé sport a rakish rear window line, while the convertible ditches this due to its electric folding fabric roof, which feeds into a horizontal boot panel.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe Concept

The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe illustrates the meaning behind the letter "M" at BMW in impressive style: it stands for "more", more of everything. As well as dynamic excellence, the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe embodies a new facet of luxury for the BMW brand - ultra-sporty, extrovert and polarising.

"The BMW 8-Series will take over as the new flagship model of the BMW line-up and, as such, combines unsurpassed sportiness and elegance," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. "The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe offers a look ahead to the most exotic and alluring variant of the new BMW 8-Series."

Symbol of a unique understanding of luxury

The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is more than simply a luxury sports car with four doors. It symbolises a new and unique understanding of luxury. "The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is designed to stir things up, to polarise - it should move you emotionally," explains Domagoj Dukec, Vice President Design BMW M and BMW i. "With this car we want to reach people who are looking for something special and who want to stand out from the crowd. Here, BMW M is unmistakably taking luxury out of its comfort zone." Like the BMW Concept 8-Series before it, the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe shows off BMW's new design language, headlined by expressive surfacing that accentuates the car's dynamism more vividly than before through its bodywork. A small number of precise character lines underline the graphic arrangement of the surfaces.

The front end: a promise of dynamic talent to quicken the pulse

Low to the road and broad in stance, the eye-catching front end of the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe delivers an immediate promise of an exceptional performance experience. The muscular surfaces and precise contours of the bonnet hint at the driving capability bubbling intently under the skin.

The face of the new BMW 8-Series is evident in the new Concept's front-end graphic. The contours of the radiator grille kidneys broaden as they descend towards the road, emphasising the car's low centre of gravity. As on early BMW coupes, the kidney elements are linked by an unbroken grille surround, creating a large single element. The headlights are positioned slightly higher than the kidneys and give them the impression of sitting lower, which further emphasizes the car's closeness to the asphalt. In contrast, the gold-coloured kidney surround brings an added air of exclusivity to the front end. Within the headlights, the lighting technology familiar from the M8 GTE endurance racer provides a dynamic, hexagonal interpretation of BMW's signature four-eyed front end, distilling elements of modern-day motor sport and luxurious quality into its inner details. Meanwhile, brawny air intakes in carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) guide the air to where it is required.

The side - elegance meets powerful precision

Even when viewed from a distance, the proportions of the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe radiate the car's dynamic character. A long wheelbase, long bonnet, flowing roofline and short tail create an elegantly sporty coupe silhouette. The emotionally rich surfacing reaches a climax in the car's shoulders around the C-pillars, north of the rear wheels. Here, the roof flows into the rear by means of elegantly sculpted fins. Lower down, the muscular flared wheel arches offer a visual expression of the power working through the rear axle. The smooth transitions between surfaces exude a certain sensuousness, while the heavy tapering of the car's shoulders combines with a wide track to bring extra definition and athleticism. Being every inch the BMW M car, the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe has a roof made from CFRP - which lowers the car's centre of gravity both visually and physically - and aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors.

The Salève Vert paint finish, whose colour appears to change from green to greyish blue in different lights, creates a hugely effective surface composition and teams up with the gold-coloured window graphic, hallmark M gills, gold-coloured brakes, wheel rims and M twin exhaust tailpipes to give the car a head-turning, all-new look.

The rear packs an imposing presence

The rear of the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe oozes the dynamic élan and visual impact for which M is renowned, and the wide track and flared wheel arches hint at the car's performance capability. Horizontal lines break up the rear end stylistically, allowing the area below the rear spoiler to catch more light and adding extra visual agility. At the outer edges, the slim, sculpted rear lights with black glass covers underscore the car's wide stance on the road. Below them, the bumper picks up the front apron's dynamic theme. The prominent diffuser and two sets of familiar M twin exhaust tailpipes together send out a clear message of absolute performance.

Looking ahead

The striking exterior of the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe combines the core values of BMW M with elegance and luxury to create a new and captivating form, and reveals a new and exciting facet of BMW M. The new model sees the BMW Group looking ahead to the BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe and BMW M8 Gran Coupe, which will be presented during the course of 2019 and round off the BMW 8-Series family.

Sleek new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupé unveiled!

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupé, which the Munich-based automaker describes as “ultra-sporty, extrovert and polarising”.

Unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show, the brand says that its M8 Gran Coupé offers a “look ahead to the most exotic and alluring variant” of the new 8 Series range.

BMW says the concept previews production versions of the upcoming 8 Series Gran Coupé and M8 Gran Coupé, which are scheduled to be presented “during the course of 2019”.

The four-door concept features a carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic roof and a Salève Vert paint finish, which contrasts with gold-coloured elements on the kidney grilles, side gills, brake calipers, alloys and twin tailpipes.
