NEW BMW M850I XDRIVE COUPÉ’S PEAK OUTPUTS CONFIRMED!

BMW has released a few more details about its upcoming 8 Series Coupé, including the power and torque outputs of the new V8 doing duty in the M850i xDrive variant.

The Munich-based brand says the new 8 Series Coupé (previewed by the BMW Concept 8 Series of May 2017) will go on sale “during the course of 2018”.

And now BMW has revealed that the M850i xDrive, which will slot in below the upcoming full-fat M8, will draw its urge from a “completely redeveloped” V8 engine with a “sporty power delivery”.

So, the headline figures? Well, the 4,4-litre, twin-turbocharged eight-pot will churn out 390 kW and 750 N.m, with the latter available from as low as 1 800 r/min. The automaker says it will reveal other technical figures, such as fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, later in 2018.

The V8 delivers its power to what BMW describes as an “extensively further developed” eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission, characterised by an “expanded spread and further shortened shift times”.

“The new V8 engine offers exactly the right balance between performance and emotion, which is what also sets the new BMW 8 Series Coupé apart,” said Christian Billig, head of drive system integration.

“Above all, the eight-cylinder harmonises perfectly with the further developed Steptronic transmission during dynamic acceleration. At the same time, the sound development of the sports exhaust system authentically reflects the car’s power delivery.

“And thanks to BMW xDrive and active rear axle locking, the engine always transfers power precisely to where it can be best converted into driving dynamics,” he added.

BMW 8-Series Coupe

The presentation of the new BMW 8-Series Coupe adds a brand new chapter to the Bavarian premium carmaker's long history of sensational sports cars - and gets its current model offensive in the luxury segment off to a particularly dynamic start. The BMW 8-Series Coupe is a dream car boasting outstanding performance, emotion-stirring design, state-of-the-art luxury and exceptionally advanced equipment features when it comes to display and control technology, driver assistance and connectivity.

The worldwide market launch of the new BMW 8-Series Coupe will commence in November 2018. The sports car will be built at the BMW Dingolfing plant, which is also home to the BMW 7-Series sedans meaning that it has acquired tremendous expertise in the manufacture of luxury vehicles. The digit 8 in the model name is indicative of the newcomer's high-ranking status within BMW's product range. As in the past with the BMW Z8 and also with the current BMW i8, it is reserved for exceptionally sporty cars that fire the emotions. The BMW 8-Series Coupe will therefore be a key component of the luxury segment model offensive set out by the BMW Group as part of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy.

The primary development objective for the new BMW 8-Series Coupe was thrilling driving dynamics. Body, powertrain and suspension were consistently honed to achieve the supreme agility, precision and poise expected of a top-class sports car. In the process, remarkably powerful engines were combined with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and BMW EfficientLightweight design measures. The new BMW 8-Series Coupe was developed in parallel to the BMW M8 GTE, which had already proven its potential in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) long-distance races and in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) held in North America. The production car now makes it possible to experience outstandingly dynamic performance in an exceedingly luxurious setting.

New BMW 8 Series Coupé revealed in M850i xDrive guise!

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the new BMW 8 Series Coupé. And it’s heading to South Africa. While the worldwide market launch of the sleek new coupé is scheduled for November 2018, the two-door sportscar will go on sale in SA in the first quarter of 2019.

Note, however, that only the M850i xDrive derivative will be offered locally. In overseas markets, two variants will be available: the aforementioned M850i and the diesel-powered 840d xDrive. The latter, for the record, makes 235 kW and 680 N.m from its 3,0-litre inline-six diesel mill, hitting 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4,9 seconds.

And the M850i? Well, as we already knew, this model will employ the brand’s twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 petrol engine (that BMW says has “undergone extensive refinement”) linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and sending 390 kW and 750 N.m (the latter between 1 800 and 4 600 r/min) to all four corners. The obligatory zero to 100 km/h dash is completed in a claimed 3,7 seconds, while top speed comes in at 250 km/h. Expect an M8 to follow at a later stage.

BMW says the latest version of its xDrive system in the M850i features a rear-wheel bias and a rear differential lock to ensure “maximum agility and precision”. Adaptive M suspension and integral active steering will ship standard.

Set to be built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant alongside the 7 Series, the new 8 Series Coupé measures 4 843 mm long, 1 902 mm wide and 1 341 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2 822 mm. The M850i model will run on 20-inch M light-alloy wheels finished in Frozen Cerium Grey metallic with a high-gloss polished finish and wrapped in 245/35 R20 front tyres and 275/30 R20 rear rubber.

BMW says the new model’s “almost fully sealed” underbody, active air flap control with adjustable grille slats and “air curtains” help to reduce aerodynamic drag. On the M850i xDrive variant, an additional front spoiler further minimises front axle lift at high speeds. The BMW M Performance model is fitted with an M rear spoiler as standard, too.

The Bavarian automaker says full leather trim for the instrument panel and door shoulders will be standard on the 8 Series Coupé, along with a leather sports steering wheel (M850i upgrades to an even sportier tiller) with shift paddles. Interestingly, the control unit for the light functions now consists of a block of buttons positioned at the bottom of the instrument panel between the steering wheel and the driver’s door.

The standard audio system comprises eleven speakers and a digital amplifier, although there is also the option of the Harman Kardon surround sound system featuring 16 speakers as well as the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, the latter boasting diamond loudspeaker technology, fully active 16-channel amplifier (with an output of 1 375 watts), dynamic equalising and 16 partly illuminated speakers.

The BMW 8 Series Coupé will come standard with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which features the latest-generation display and control concept comprising a high-resolution instrument cluster with a screen diagonal of 12,3 inches and a 10,25 inch control display.

2018 BMW 8 Series revealed at Le Mans

All-new two-door coupé designed to serve up 911 performance with S-Class luxury

The new BMW 8 Series Coupe has been designed to offer the performance of a Porsche 911 with the luxury of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, according to the car’s global product manager.

The new two-door premium sports car revives the 8 Series nameplate last seen in 1999. The model has been conceived to kick-start BMW’s push into the super-luxury market, and global product manager Sarah Lessmann said that the brief was to “define how a sports car should be”. She added: “Everyone in the project had the vision of BMW getting back to sports cars, and not just sporty cars.

The 8 Series, which goes on sale this month, will initially be offered in two versions. The range-topping M850i xDrive features a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that produces 523bhp with 554lb ft of torque available between 1800rpm and 4600rpm. It can achieve 0-62mph in 3.7sec, with a limited top speed of 155mph.

The V8 engine has been reworked extensively by BMW, including new enlarged twin-scroll turbochargers, increasing power by 67bhp from previous versions.

The other launch model, the 840d xDrive, is powered by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel producing 316bhp and 501lb ft, with a 0-62mph time of 4.9sec.

Both models employ an eight-speed gearbox, with the gear ratios increased to boost the sporting performance. The 8 Series also features an xDrive all-wheel drive system, with a rear-biased set-up that sends all the power to the rear wheels as standard.

BMW believes that the performance focus of the 8 Series means it can fill a gap in the luxury sports car market between models such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé and Porsche 911.

“We have a broad range of competitors, but comparing the 8 Series to only one just doesn’t feel right,” said Lessmann.

“There is a big gap [between the S-Class Coupé and the 911] and we decided the 8 Series shouldn’t quite be in the middle of those: it takes the best out of everything, and defines its own gap. Performance-wise, we’re close to the 911, but we also offer elegant and luxurious materials to match the best of the S-Class.”

While the new car effectively replaces the 6 Series Gran Coupé as the two-door coupé in BMW’s line-up, Lessmann insisted it is neither a successor to that model nor a coupé version of the 7 Series, with which it shares platform architecture elements (and will be built alongside at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany). She said: “The 6 Series was a derivation of the 5 Series, but here we have a stand-alone car, design-wise, performance-wise and component-wise.

“We could start from scratch to define how a sports car should be.”

The 8 Series was launched at the Le Mans 24 Hours to recognise that it has been developed alongside the forthcoming M8 and the M8 GTE endurance racing car.

The road car features racing- inspired double-wishbone front and five-link rear axle suspension. The M850i has been developed as an integrated package. Lessmann said: “We decided to go for a special set-up, so customers will find their car made on point. There is no choice for the chassis components: it’s a perfect set-up.”

That set-up was built around bespoke Bridgestone tyres (245/35 R20 at the front, 275/30 R20 at the rear), which sit on 20in wheels. It also features variable damper control, active M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and a new version of BMW’s xDrive system, which includes adaptive power steering and integral active steering and a limited-slip differential. The model gets 395mm M Sport brakes.

Lessmann noted that the M Sport exhaust system and V8 engine ensured that the model offered a “true sporty sound experience”. She added: “You don’t just have the driving experience of a sports car, but the true V8 engine sound – there’s no sound generator: it’s pure.”

The 840d sits on 18in wheels as standard, with 19in and 20in available as options, as part of the M Sport and M Technic Sport packages. A range of driver assistance systems, including active cruise control, is offered as standard; features such as lane keeping assist are optional as part of the Driving Assistant Professional pack.

The 8 Series is 4843mm long with a wheelbase of 2822mm, 1902mm wide and 1341mm tall. The boot has a capacity of 420 litres. The model adopts BMW’s new design language for its sports cars, which aims to bring a more modern and ‘emotional’ look. Lessmann claims some design cues were taken from 1970s sports cars.

The new design includes the revamped, bolder kidney grille, which features a single surround and hexagonal pattern, along with the slimmest headlights offered on any BMW model. Those are matched by slim LED tail-lights, which feed into a spoiler and two sets of exhaust pipes. The car has deliberately muscular flanks and a ‘double bubble’ dip in the roof (available in carbonfibre as an option), designed to recall a detail from classic racing cars. The large front and rear spoilers are to boost grip and performance.

Inside, the 8 Series gets bespoke seats, a 12.3in driving instrument display and a 10.25in central touchscreen as standard, along with an enhanced version of BMW’s head-up display. The control system can be operated via touchscreen, voice control, gesture control or the iDrive touch controller, along with buttons on the standard leather steering wheel.

The clean interior design features controls, including the central touchscreen, that are tilted towards the driver. This focus is “very important for a sports car”, said Lessmann. In order to emphasise the car’s premium quality, leather is standard on the instrument panel and doors, and options include a diamond-cut glass gear selector and other controls.

BMW has yet to confirm additional engine options, although a mild hybrid version is understood to be under consideration.

Lessmann said the firm is “still discussing” future 8 Series variants. A Concept M8 Gran Coupé was shown at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a future four-door coupé likely to be launched late next year, and a cabriolet version is also set to be introduced.

Prices for the 8 Series rise from £76,270 for the 840d to £100,045 for the M850i.

That front grill looks terrible. Looks like a after thought.

BMW finally reveals reincarnated 8 Series Coupe

BMW’s 8 Series nameplate has been brought back to life as a replacement for the 6 Series Coupé, and it’s likely to go down as one of the better looking modern Beemers.

Revealed ahead of this year's Le Mans 24 Hour race, where the already-revealed M8 race car will compete in the GTE class, the new 8 Series Coupé will take the on-road competition to Merc’s S-Class Coupé, complete with a sleek new design and cutting-edge gadgets.

The 8 Series is set to grace South African shores from the first quarter of 2019 and only the M850i xDrive will be offered here - European buyers will also have the option of an 840d xDrive model, powered by a 3-litre turbodiesel with 235kW and 680Nm.

The M850i is motivated by a new 4.4-litre V8 engine, with turbochargers located within the ‘V’ shaped space between the cylinder banks. Compared with the current V8 equivalent, BMW has extensively redeveloped the ignition and engine electronics as well as the crankcase.

The result is a 50kW increase in power, to 390kW between 5500 and 6000rpm, while maximum torque of 750Nm is available from 1800 to 4600rpm.

That’s sufficient, brags BMW, to haul it from standstill to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

Drive is shifted to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and a rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system, featuring an electronically controlled differential lock.

What’s more, BMW’s Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers is standard on the 8 Series, as is Integral Active Steering, while an active roll stabilisation feature is available as an option.

Other M Performance bits and pieces that you’ll find on the M850i are 20-inch alloy wheels, M Sport brakes, M leather steering wheel, multifunction sports seats in Vernasca leather and mesh-style stainless steel interior trim strips.

Standard kit extends to BMW’s latest-generation 7.0 Operating System featuring a 26.6cm touchscreen (with voice, gesture and iDrive rotary control options), a 31.2cm digital instrument cluster and Head-Up Display

High end options include the BMW Display Key, wireless charging, climate seats, glass-encased controls and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System.

On the driver assistance front, the 8 Series is available with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Steering and Lane Control Assistant and the semi-autonomous Reverse Assistant.

There are some nifty digital features too, including vehicle-to-vehicle hazard warnings, over-the-air software upgrades and the BMW ‘Digital Key’ which allows owners to unlock and start the vehicle using their smartphone.
