An older family member drives a BMW and their battery is in need of replacement. BMW have quoted just under 6k for the battery itself minus install. Is it really necessary that the battery be BMW? It is an admittedly large thing. The car is a 116 i thing.

Seems excessive. My Willard or whatever is less than 2k a pop. With 2 years warranty but small.

Just paid the same for a 100ah AGM through Battery center, 3 years warranty.

Edit, for a BMW 320d, so no, you don't need a BMW battery.

Edit 2, make sure it's the same rating as the original or you will cook the battery without a recoding.

Just make sure to also recode when install the new battery.

I'll advise they let BM do it if it'll be the same cost outside. It's a huge battery for such a relatively small car but guess all those electronics are on the thirsty side.

If I recall the 116i does have stop start and the stop start system doesn't use an ordinary battery, so is expected to be larger and more expensive to deal with the stop start system drain on the battery..

if the car has stop start is uses a massive battery white a crap load of cranking amps.
Can get an non bmw battery just match the AH

320D here. Could only get a higher AH battery 2 years ago.
Did not tell the BMW it is a new battery.

Will let you know in 3 years.
The coding resets it as a new battery & i think alters charging levels, can also be done with Bimmer Code or Bimmer Link.
You can also change the ah rating in one of those, forget which.

Dont have any of those tools.

Been 2 years, lets see if the battery lasts 5 years.

Yeah R6k for a battery is ripoff material.

If its a relatively new (10 or so years) BMW, it likely uses an AGM battery which will be from R2k - R4k depending on the size from any reputable battery place, and I didn't need to recode anything when I replaced mine in a 320D a few years ago.

Same specs non-BMW battery will do the trick. Initialising the battery is recommended. Car wont ask for it though, which means you can still drive as per "normal".

I replaced mine last year with a Varta 100ah (also F30 320D) . Think it was about R3k ? No coding needed.
You can get cheaper ones, though if you use stop start, yeah, that thing will be dead in no time, especially during winter.
