Ignoring the fact that the 800 engine is actually made in Austria (it's the 650 single thats assembled in China, with parts made by Rotax in Austria), tell us more about why things made in China are bad? Or why in this particular instance its bad, do the BMW 800's suffer significantly more engine failures vs its competition? The only major issue with the "China made" thumper was a start issue when the engine was particularly hot or cold (material mismatch with different thermal expansion rates that would prevent the engine cranking), which was fixed in any model made after April 2012 iirc, the rest fixed by warranty via service bulletin. Then the 800 has no product wide engine issues that I'm aware of, do you have any sources to back up your statement in any way?

Personally (note the personally), the F800GS is for me one of the worst bikes I have ever ridden. The worst is the Aprilia Pegaso which is a donkey and doesn't corner.

If it was me looking at this, the Tiger 800 would win. I rode it and immediately fell in love.

However, if I had the means, that R1200GS would be my first choice. What an awesome bike.
 
Price seems reasonable enough, although there is bargaining room since he isn't offering it with luggage, nor does it have crash bars
Only thing to really look for is play in the driveshaft. I'll have to scratch around to find out how to check that again. You can also get the VIN and check its history at the dealer.

The F800GS is an awesome bike! I got mine when they did the facelift in 2013 and so far put on 25000km's on it.
I added the SW motech crash bars and the BMW handbar protectors - back then the total price came to R120 000. I got it with the Michellin anakee2 tires and I really recommend you add the same - I do road only atm. These tires grip in wet and dry conditions. The bike does not get thrown around by the wind at all - for the guys living in Cape Town, you'll appreciate this.

In terms of servicing, they are not expensive at all to maintain. I did have a recall on my sidestand, and the handle bar had some bearings that went but BMW picked up half of the tab for that.

I used to service the bike at Donfords BMW in stellenbosch but they opened up in the Cape Town CBD in Buitenghracht street which is a lot more convenient.

I replaced my stock battery the other day, at a cost of R1000 at TracMac in Paarden Island. My last service cost me just under R2000 for the full service.

Some people complain that the stock rims are a bit soft.

All in all great bike! I ride this bike every day - rain or sunshine - to work and back. It is nice and slim so you can get through traffic quite easily. The bike has heated grips for the cold days. ABS, Stability Control (ASC), adjustable suspension and rock solid on the road. Also, the bike is air cooled

To lift someone on the back is quite nice, and the bike has more than enough power.

If you are thinking about getting one, you won't be sorry! Safe riding!
