BMW iX and i4 now have in-car gaming support using your smartphone as a controller

Today BMW announced that AirConsole, its solution for in-car gaming developed in record time, is now available on iX and i4 vehicles manufactured from July onwards. Through its Startup Garage, an initiative which "promotes the integration of state-of-the-art startup technologies throughout the entire organization", BMW worked together with N-Dream to bring that company's AirConsole solution to its models.

BMW "supports startups with the concentrated expertise of an international automotive group and, in return, gets quick access to new ideas" such as this one.

2024 BMW i4 brings updated range and pricing

The 2024 BMW i4 has rolled into the United States with some exciting updates, including a new xDrive40 version, improved EPA range, and a few changes in pricing. The BMW i4 lineup now consists of four versions, each available with two different wheel sizes. These versions include the rear-wheel drive eDrive35 and eDrive40, the all-wheel drive xDrive40 (a newcomer), and the performance-oriented, all-wheel drive M50.

For the 2024 model year, the eDrive35 and eDrive40 versions see a $200 price increase, starting at an MSRP of $52,200 and $57,300, respectively. The new xDrive40, with all-wheel drive, starts at $61,600 and if you opt for 19-inch wheels, that'll set you back an additional $600. The top-of-the-line M50 version sees a $1,000 price bump to $69,700, and upgrading to 20-inch wheels costs an extra $2,500. On all of those there's an additional $995 destination fee.

BMW i4 review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“We like the Model 3 and Polestar 2, but there's still room for a sweet-driving alternative. The i4 is that alternative”
We like the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, but there's still a vacancy for a really sweet-driving alternative. The i4 is that alternative. In eDrive40 guise it rides very well and handles more deftly than any other comparative EV. A little heavier handling and slightly numb on steering compared to an ICE 3 Series, but otherwise good.

The new screen interface is a mixed blessing, but otherwise the cabin has all the qualities of a typical BMW. It's snug and well-made. The frameless doors are a nice touch, and, well, it’s not as offensive as some of the stuff BMW’s been churning out recently.

Meanwhile, this is a car with the sort of range that should allow almost anyone to do almost any of their road trips. It charges fast, and brisk driving or low temperatures don't harm the range as badly as some EVs. It runs Tesla’s battery tech close for year-round use.

It doesn't look like a spaceship, but lots of people don't want that. This car’s secret superpower is that it’s a proper BMW.

BMW M names its best-selling model of 2023…

The BMW M division hit record sales in 2023, with more than 200 000 units registered around the world. So, what was the best-selling car from BMW M GmbH last year?

In 2023, the BMW M division registered as many as 202 530 units across its performance portfolio globally. This represented a significant 14.3% increase over 2022’s effort and was the first time BMW M GmbH had breached the 200 000-unit mark. So, which model was the division’s strongest seller?

Well, the German group has announced that the BMW i4 M50 was again the best-selling M automobile (remember, the division is responsible for both the M Performance and full-fat M line-ups) in 2023. Unfortunately, as was the case in the previous year, the company opted not to release an exact sales figure for the i40 M50.

BMW has mildly updated the electric i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupe

And we do mean mild: new grille, new lights and a bit of a tidy-up inside

Be still thine beating hearts: BMW has given its electric i4 and 4 Series Gran Coupé a bit of a mild update. And by mild, we mean: a marginally tweaked grille, some fancy new headlights and a few new cabin features.

First, the outside. The i4 gets slimmer new headlights with cool blue in-lays, a new set of two-tone double-spoke light-alloys and a revised kidney grille, with finishes in matt chrome or high-gloss black depending on how you're speccing it.

The updated colour palette also includes this addition of this rather striking green (see images above) and a metallic red. The i4 M50 variant - the best-selling BMW M car of 2023, believe it or not - also gets new M-specific wing mirror caps. Woohoo!

The same changes transfer over to the 4er GC, which gets a marginally wider exhaust that can be trimmed in high-gloss black upon request. BMW has introduced its 'Laserlight' tail lights as an optional extra to both models. Apparently these posh lights project up to half a mile behind, but fear not: BMW says they’re "more pleasant to the eye".

BMW i4 M50 xDrive

Already innovators in the premium midsize class in terms of aesthetic appeal, driving pleasure, electrification, and digitalization, the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe are building further on their unique status in the marketplace with updates in all these areas.

New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels, new designs for the headlights, and rear lights available with laser-lit accents accentuate the bold visual impact of both models.

Inside, the BMW Curved Display provides the stage for the latest evolution of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 8.5. The display and control/operation system can be specified with an Augmented View display for the BMW Maps navigation system. And new steering wheel designs, interior trim elements, and upholsteries bring modern touches to the premium ambience of the interior.

The new BMW i4 and new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe will be built at BMW's home plant in Munich, whose transformation into a production facility geared exclusively to all-electric models is being fueled by substantial investment. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe will get underway in July 2024.

New design for the BMW kidney grille, headlights, and rear lights

Slim headlights and a vertically arranged BMW kidney grille dropping deeply towards the road define the front-end styling of the BMW i4 and BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe. A refreshed design brings additional visual impact to these signature brand features. The surround of the BMW kidney grille is now finished in matt chrome, both as standard and in conjunction with the optional M Sport package. Due to the lower cooling requirement of the electric drive system, the BMW kidney grille of the new BMW i4 has a fully enclosed upper section, below which is a Black high-gloss surface topped by a matte-silver honeycomb pattern. The air intakes on the combustion-engined versions of the new BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe have a mesh structure whose surfaces are now finished in matte Quartz Silver.
