New BMW i4: Tesla Model 3 rival to produce 523bhp

German firm claims 4 Series-based EV, due in 2021, will be a true performance saloon

BMW has confirmed that its forthcoming i4 electric saloon will produce 523bhp, with the Tesla Model 3 featuring a top speed of around 125mph.

The new model, due to go into production in 2021 following the forthcoming iX3, will be the German firm’s first electric saloon. Along with the regular 4 Series, the new EV was previewed with the bold 4 Series Gran Coupe concept at the Frankfurt motor show. BMW claims the i4 “heralds a new era of driving pleasure”, and will feature the firm’s “hallmark brand driving pleasure in a particularly concentrated form.”

BMW has released new official shots of the i4 undergoing winter testing, and also confirmed that it will make use of its fifth-generation eDrive system, which will also be used on the iX3 – due in 2020 – and the advanced iNext, which is set for launch in in 2021.

BMW claims the 523bhp motors will allow for a 0-62mph time of around four seconds. The firm says that output has been chosen to mirror the level of a V8 engine in current BMW models, and claims it will offer “outstanding performance characteristics and exceptionally high efficiency”.

The latest eDrive system is built around a modular system featuring the electric motor, transmission and power electronics in a single housing, which BMW says means it can be used for a range of different models and power outputs. The i4 will feature an 80kWh high-voltage battery pack that weighs around 550kg and gives a claimed range of around 373 miles. The battery can be charged at speeds up to 150kW.

As in previous prototype shots, a clear visual link between the i4 and the latest 3 Series can be seen. The i4 will share much of its design with the upcoming second-generation 4 Series.

BMW i4 performance figures revealed

BMW’s next electrified range of vehicles looks set to don the i4 nameplate; a 3 Series-sized all-electric sedan the brand promises will focus on the qualities key to its inherently driver-focussed reputation.

The four-door Gran Coupe body shape is set to combine dynamics and elegance in a spacious, comfortable and versalite package. The new model will be shaped by fifth-generation BMW eDriving technology shared with the forthcoming 2020 BMW iX3.

The i4 will make use of latest-generation battery cell technology set to provide it with at least 390 kW and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 4,0 seconds. A top speed of more than 200 km/h and a operating range of 600 km has been touted.

BMW I4 Confirmed To Pack 523 HP (380 KW)

At one stage the only manufacturer that was well and truly committed to making electric vehicles was Tesla. But now, as emission regulations are slowly choking the life out of internal combustion engines, the likes of Porsche, Jaguar and indeed BMW are increasingly offering alternatives to the American brand. Speaking of BMW, the German marque has recently confirmed that the next electric vehicle to form part of their portfolio will be the i4.

We first saw the i4 in i Vision Dynamics Concept guise back in 2017 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. While the BMW i8 and i3 are essentially two standalone models, the i4 will form part of the 4-Series lineup. According to MotorAuthority.com, the i4 will probably replace the 4-Series Gran Coupe.

So, what electric motor will be powering the i4? Well, the 80-kilowatt-hour battery power unit is expected to push out 523 horsepower (380 kW) and have a range of around 480 kilometres. 0-100 km/h will be dealt with in under 4 seconds and it will have a limited top speed of 193 km/h.

BMW Concept i4 to preview 523bhp Tesla Model 3 rival

Munich firm will showcase its forthcoming electric four-door Gran Coupe with a new concept at Geneva

BMW will unveil the Concept i4 electric saloon at the Geneva motor show, previewing its forthcoming 523bhp Tesla Model 3 rival.

The showroom version of the i4 is due to enter production in 2021 and BMW has already shown images of a camouflaged version testing alongside the upcoming iX3 electric SUV. BMW has teased the concept with a single image and a short video.

BMW’s Concept i4 shows its form in teaser video

The next chapter in BMW’s ‘i’ badged electric car story is set to unfold at the Geneva Motor Show next week, when the company pulls the covers off of a concept version of the upcoming i4.

But whereas the i3 and i8 were very much niche players, the i4 is set to thrust BMW’s electric car game into the mainstream. The newcomer is said to be related to the BMW 3 Series and as this new teaser video shows, it takes the form of a four-door Gran Coupe.

According to BMW the fully-electric i4 features advanced battery cell technology that allows a range of around 600km between charges.

It’s powerful too, with BMW quoting an output in the region of 390kW for the i4’s electric motor, which should allow it to sprint from 0-100km/h in around four seconds.

“Its spontaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 outstanding performance characteristics and exceptionally high efficiency,” the German carmaker said

The BMW Concept i4 Is Our Closest Look Yet At BMW's Main Weapon Against Tesla

BMW’s chief technical officer Klaus Fröhlich told reporters last year that the upcoming BMW i4 is going to compete directly with Tesla sedans. Up until now, we’ve only seen the futuristic “BMW i Vision Dynamics,” but thanks to leaked photos, we now have a look at the BMW Concept i4, which looks pretty close to production ready.

BMW is set to reveal the BMW Concept i4 tomorrow at a “digital press conference” instead of the Geneva Motor Show, which has been canceled due to concerns about Coronavirus. The company made that announcement last week on its media site, and included this teaser of the car:

The front end looks nice and aggressive thanks to two tall nostrils and slim headlights with interesting halo-esque daytime running lights. The car looks like it’s fairly close to production feasible, though I talked with my coworker Jason Torchinsky, and we think the mirrors, lack of provisions for license plates, wheels (they’re a bit tight in the arches), apparent lack of wipers, and futuristic headlights will likely see changes before production.

Ugh, that grille... I hope it's just a concept.

From the first couple of pictures it looked a bit like a Scooby but these most recent ones... My goodness!

BMW's 390kW i4 Revealed

Meet the next-generation of BMW’s electric vehicle strategy.
Although its debut event has been cancelled (following the Geneva auto show’s annulment), BMW is still proud to digitally reveal its i4 Concept.

The i4 Concept will become a production vehicle in 2021 and BMW’s most significant electric vehicle effort yet, positioning between the brand’s i3 and i8.

Whereas SUVs and crossovers have become the demand vehicles for most premium brands, BMW has remained true to its sedan heritage with the i4. It features a silhouette which is reminiscent of the brand’s Gran Coupes and seats four passengers.

New BMW i4 electric saloon shown in near-production form

Tesla Model 3 rival is based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe, has 523bhp and offers a 373-mile range

BMW’s upcoming i4 electric saloon has again been shown as a concept, this time as a thinly veiled production preview.

The all-new four-door model will be an integral part of an extended range of BMW i electric cars that are due for launch by 2025. Planned to go on sale in the UK in mid-2021 as a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3, it is claimed to make as much as 523bhp and have a range of up to 373 miles.

The i4 is based on the second-generation 4 Series Gran Coupé, which is set to be revealed later this year. Like its combustion-engined sibling, it takes a three-box silhouette with a distinctive cab-rearward profile. This is to help it appeal to traditional BMW customers, moving away from the controversially styled i3 hatchback of 2013.

BMW have repeatedly said that the Chinese love big grills and China is BMW's largest market by far.

So the grills will only get bigger.

So unnecessarily ugly. And in mud brown too. Really took that piggy look too far.

BMW i4 Concept

The BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its history with the unveiling of a pure-electric Gran Coupe. The BMW Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in 2021. It provides a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe - all while generating zero local emissions.

"The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. "The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission." The drivetrain's standout numbers include a range of up to 600 km (WLTP), output of up to 530 hp, 0 - 100 km/h (0 - 60 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism.
