BMW foretells Tesla rival with Concept i4

Tone it down to ‘showroom condition’ and what you essentially have here is BMW’s answer to the Tesla Model 3.

The BMW Concept i4 was revealed via the internet on Tuesday in lieu of its Geneva debut that the coronavirus put paid to, and it previews a new production model that will hit the scene in 2021 as the company’s first all-electric offering in the midsize category.

BMW has invested heavily in electrification before with its high-tech and expensive-to-produce i3 and i8 family, but the i4 represents a step into the electrified mainstream as it is intended to sell in far bigger volumes, alongside the all-electric iX3 and the production version of the iNext concept.

The i4 will be related to the latest 3 Series and takes the kind of design form that you would have expected from the next-generation 4 Series Gran Coupe. It’s faux grille also takes inspiration from the giant kidney grille that we saw on last year’s 4 Series concept, which proved controversial among fans.

BMW has taken the wraps off its new Concept i4, which it bills as a preview of an upcoming production pure-electric gran coupé.

The show car represents what the Munich-based firm terms a “look ahead to the BMW i4”, which is scheduled to enter production in 2021 as the BMW Group’s first all-electric model in the premium midsize segment.

The electric powertrain offers an output up to 390 kW and a claimed range of 600 km. BMW says the vehicle will hit 100 km/h from standstill in “approximately 4,0 seconds” before topping out “in excess of 200 km/h”.

 
Refreshed roundel? BMW quietly floats new two-dimensional logo

BMW has quietly suggested it plans to update its trademark roundel logo, saying it is “taking the first steps” to launching its new brand identity.

Tucked away in the press material for the new Concept i4, the Munich-based firm mentioned the show car features the firm’s “new look for the first time”.

 
BMW And BMW M Get New Logos

We spend our lives looking at mobile phone and computer screens so it makes sense that logos adopt a flat design ethos.

Last year, Volkswagen revealed a new flatter modern logo and now it is BMW’s turn.

BMW showed off the new logo on the i4 Concept and it is actually quite a big change. Gone is the iconic black ring that surrounded the blue-and-white pie inside. The ring is now transparent, letting the Frozen Light Copper of the concept shine through. Obviously this will change depending on the car’s exterior colour.

The new logo is also flat, eschewing the old logo’s three-dimensional appearance, lighting effects, and shadows, though it’ll still look 3D on the vehicles.

 
BMW turns to award-winning composer to make its EVs sound soulful

BMW's new Concept i4 electric car features a ‘soundtrack’ by award-winning movie composer Hans Zimmer.

The sounds are to address concerns that the near-silent running of battery-powered vehicles makes driving feel soulless.

The German company’s i4 electric prototype previews a new sedan that will take on Elon Musk’s Tesla Model 3 in 2021.

BMW has recruited Mr Zimmer to create a suite of sounds for the vehicle, including start-up noises, acceleration tones and acoustic accompaniments to a door opening.

The film composer, who designed the tones alongside BMW’s sound engineer Renzo Vitale, won an Academy Award for his score for The Lion King. He also wrote the music to Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, and worked on the forthcoming 007 film No Time To Die.

Mr Zimmer launched his electric-drive soundtrack for the i4 on Tuesday and the sounds are set to be introduced as a standard feature worldwide from July.

Here's How BMW Screwed Up Its Logo Redesign

As you may have heard, BMW updated its logo for the first time in over two decades, and, since it’s a thing that happened in the world, some people are not happy about it. I can see both sides here; BMW’s logo was due for an update. And while I like some of what’s been done, there’s validity to the criticisms too.

As you know, my job is to solve humanity’s problems, usually via writing crap about cars, but, if called on to take a crack at a logo, I’m ready. So, relax, humanity, I’ve got this. BMW, pay attention.

BMW says refreshed logo 'won’t be used on (production) vehicles' after all

BMW has confirmed it has no immediate plans to use the new, flatter version of its famous roundel logo on its production vehicles.

After debuting the refreshed roundel on the recently revealed Concept i4, the Munich-based firm released a statement confirming the new corporate identity was “for online and offline communication purposes” only.

“The new logo is a new media branding and will be used in addition to the existing logo. It won’t be used on the vehicles or in the exterior and interior labelling [of] our dealerships; the existing logo remains in use there,” BMW said in its statement.

 
New BMW Logo Only For Use In Communications And Not Cars

A BMW spokesman confirmed to Motoring Research that the redesigned logo is intended only for use in communications.

“It won’t be deployed physically on cars… the existing logo remains in use there.”

The transition to the new logo will take place between now and the end of May 2021. All online and offline communications will switch to it, including at trade fairs, motorshows and events.

The sound of the i4

Because electric cars are silent when they're on, BMW has developed a unique sound for the i4. It was developed under the brand name of 'IconicSounds Electric' by world renowned composer Hans Zimmer together with BMW's sound designer Renzo Vitale.

BMW says its 'IconicSounds Electric' aims to bring emotion to the company's electric vehicles and make them audible using individual sound worlds.

The sound of the Concept i4 achieves this to perfection says BMW – it combines the carmaker's past and future. It gives the driver the feeling that there are no limits of expression.

The sound is manifold, surprising and it provides a sense of lightness and transparency. The sound worlds of the Concept i4 range from the driving sounds in "Core" mode to the more intense and pronounced sounds of "Sport" mode. Also included are the sounds of the door opening and the starting scenario.

 
Upcoming BMW I4 Will Be More Powerful Than Upcoming M4 Competition

The most powerful variant will be the i4 which will rival the Tesla Model 3 with 523 hp (390 kW) and around 800 Nm of torque.

When the G82 M4 arrives, you will have the choice between Coupé and Cabriolet bodystyles, as well as in standard rear-wheel-drive and top-spec four-wheel-drive Competition forms.

 
BMW to pause Munich production for six weeks ahead of i4's arrival

BMW says it will pause production at its Munich plant for six weeks to upgrade the facility for the arrival of the i4 on the assembly line.

The German company has confirmed no vehicles will be produced between the “end of the late shift on 23 July and the start of the early shift on 7 September”. During this time, the firm will implement “numerous structural and remodelling measures” before the fully electric i4 goes into production in 2021.

The factory currently produces the 3 Series Sedan and 3 Series Touring, with the upcoming new M3 likewise set to be built at the Munich facility. BMW says the production interruption has been “planned and prepared for since early 2019”.

“We are gearing up our Munich plant for the future. Once remodelling is finished, we will be able to produce vehicles with diesel, petrol and hybrid drivetrains, as well as the fully electric BMW i4, all on the same line. This will allow us to respond flexibly to customer demand,” said Robert Engelhorn, plant director.

BMW says integrating the new i4 into the existing production system “will be a major challenge” since the high-voltage battery makes the newcomer’s body concept different to that of the models previously built at the plant.

 
Electric BMW i4 M Confirmed

BMW’s M boss, Markus Flasch, has confirmed that an electric M car is on the cards.

Earlier this year, BMW revealed its i4 Concept which represents the next generation of electric vehicles to come from the Munich-based firm.

The i4 electric sedan is due to be revealed before the end of the year with production starting in 2021.

The i4 Concept boasts an impressive power output of 390 kW with 2 electric motors and an 80 kWh battery. Electric range is expected to be in the region of 600 km on a single charge and acceleration from zero to 100 kph is said to take only 4 seconds. No doubt, it will be interesting to see what BMW brings to the tar when the production i4 is revealed.

But, there’s more, BMW M boss, Markus Flasch, has confirmed that an electric M model is on the way.

“Next year we will launch the first battery-electric M car in the performance segment, based on the i4, as something to confirm” he said.

 

BMW M boss confirms EV performance model to launch in 2021

Set to be an M-Performance version of i4 electric saloon, model will bring hot sub-brand into new era

BMW has officially confirmed an M-badged electric performance model will be unveiled this year, bringing a “completely new manifestation of the distinctive M feeling”.

In a release detailing BMW M’s 2020 sales performance, it's said that M boss Markus Flasch “looks forward” to “presenting an electrically powered performance automobile for the first time”. Autocar understands this will be an M-badged variant of the forthcoming BMW i4 electric saloon.

However, unlike the soon-to-arrive 2021 M3 and M4, the i4 M is believed to be an ‘M-lite’ model rather than a fully fledged M product, like the current M340i.

The standard i4 is expected to be unveiled in final production form in the coming months before going on sale right at the end of the year.

German firm's 4 Series-based EV enters final phase of dynamics testing before debut this year with 523bhp

BMW has released new images, a new video and fresh detail of its i4 electric saloon ahead of the car's unveiling later this year.

The latest official shots of thinly disguised prototypes were taken as part of the brand’s final phase of dynamic testing of the model, which is closely linked in design to the yet-to-be-revealed 4 Series Gran Coupé.

M4-beating numbers? New BMW i4’s performance figures confirmed

BMW has released a few details – including some performance figures – about its upcoming fully electric i4 sedan.

Described as “a four-door gran coupé”, the German company says the new i4 will be fully revealed in a “few months”, with production set to take place at Plant Munich.

So, what sort of numbers are we looking at here? Well, the firm says the electric powertrain will offer “up to 390 kW” (matching the peak power figure of 2020's Concept i4), resulting in a sprint from zero to 100 km/h mark in “just 4,0 seconds”.

As a reminder, the standard G82-generation M4 makes 353 kW and hits three figures in a claimed 4,2 seconds, while the rear-driven M4 Competition model (an all-paw version will follow soon) generates 375 kW and completes the obligatory sprint in a claimed 3,9 seconds.

 
New BMW iDrive 8 system revealed (and rotary controller survives!)

BMW has fully revealed its new iDrive 8 infotainment system, which will be “rolled out gradually” to all of the German firm’s vehicles.

The latest BMW operating system is expected to make its debut in the new iX later in 2021, before also featuring in the upcoming i4.

The Munich-based firm claims the new generation of iDrive takes the interaction between driver and vehicle “into a digital future where many areas of life are getting increasingly smart”.

BMW’s iDrive 8 system features a new generation of displays, controls and software, as well as what the company describes as “extremely powerful connectivity and data processing”. The operating system is able to benefit from “regular” over-the-air software improvements.
