WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
“The iX is a big comfy home-on-wheels, with a vast amount of technology and impressive range”
BMW will do battery versions of all its mainstream models – as it already has with the Mini Electric, iX3 and i4 – but it also wanted to build this all-in electric car as a showcase for its best work on materials, aerodynamics and driver assist.
BMW isn't selling this as a driver's champion. If you want a traditional BMW sports saloon that happens to be electric, the i4 is your car (although don’t expect that to handle as engagingly as a 330e. And don’t expect that to drive as engagingly as an M3). The iX is a big comfy home-on-wheels, and a vast amount of technology has been poured into making sure the driver is soothed while the passengers kick back. It's efficient for a full-size e-SUV. The range is impressive, and it can recharge pretty rapidly too.
Choose carefully from among the visual option packs, wheels and paint. Then you might find an iX you can like the look of. There's a lot else to like – provided you realise it’s a machine built for comfy cruising.

BMW Is Still Working the Kinks Out of the iX
After recalls for power loss and failing noise generators, some 9,500 examples of the electric SUV will require service to fix potentially ineffective airbags.
The BMW iX has been in the news quite a bit since the start of 2023, but not so much for the reasons the German automaker would’ve preferred. Weeks after the battery-electric SUV was recalled for random power loss and also being too quiet, it’s now come under scrutiny for improperly deploying airbags.
The campaign, dated February 14 per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, mentions that the driver-side airbags in the 2022 and 2023 iX and X1 may have been manufactured defective by BMW’s supplier. To be clear, this isn’t one of those Takata-esque, shrapnel-spewing airbag recalls. The problem in this case is that the airbags in affected vehicles — estimated just one percent of the group recalled — may not deploy with the intended trajectory, limiting their effectiveness in the event of a crash.
According to the official Safety Recall Report, both SUVs’ driver-side airbags still meet federal requirements even despite this defect, but BMW is voluntarily replacing them all just to be safe, as it should. The automaker says it’s not aware of any injuries or deaths related to the problem at this time.

Keen on the fully electric BMW iX but crave more power than the 240 kW offered by the xDrive40 derivative and the 385 kW generated by the xDrive50 variant? Well, the Munich-based firm’s local division has you covered, having quietly added the new iX M60 to the line-up.
Yes, the new BMW iX M60 features an electric motor on each axle, together churning out up to 455 kW and a whopping 1 100 Nm. For the record, peak power sits at 397 kW for the most part but can be temporarily increased to 455 kW. Similarly, maximum twisting force comes in at 1 015 Nm in Sport mode, though is boosted to 1 100 Nm with Launch Control activated.
All that oomph is enough for the all-wheel-drive iX M60 to complete the 0-100 kph sprint in a claimed 3.8 seconds (in defiance of its near-2 700 kg unladen weight), before topping out at 250 kph. The lithium-ion battery pack, meanwhile, boasts a net capacity of 105.2 kWh, allowing a claimed single-charge range of up to 561 km.

Today BMW announced that AirConsole, its solution for in-car gaming developed in record time, is now available on iX and i4 vehicles manufactured from July onwards. Through its Startup Garage, an initiative which "promotes the integration of state-of-the-art startup technologies throughout the entire organization", BMW worked together with N-Dream to bring that company's AirConsole solution to its models.
BMW "supports startups with the concentrated expertise of an international automotive group and, in return, gets quick access to new ideas" such as this one.
