BMW iNext: advanced electric SUV to be revealed tomorrow

Production version of the semi-autonomous concept will be the first to use BMW's versatile new architecture

The BMW iNext, an electric SUV with advanced autonomous systems, will be unwrapped tomorrow (11 November) as the next step in the brand's transition to a maker of electric vehicles.

Making its first production-spec appearance as part of a wider event looking "ahead to the future of mobility", the iNext sits on a radical new platform and will provide the “building blocks” for the BMW Group’s future.

Official images previously showed the production car testing in prototype form in Sweden ahead of an expected sales launch in 2021. While the iNext is a similar size to the X5, BMW has said that it represents ‘Project i 2.0’, sitting outside of its planned range of electric 'i' SUVs as a new ‘technology flagship’ for the brand.

The test car was running at BMW’s winter testing facility in Arjeplog, Sweden, and features a number of notable differences from the concept first shown in 2018. The backwards-opening rear doors have been replaced by a conventional pair and larger B-pillars have been added. While disguised, the grille on the test car is a more standard item than the concept's bold translucent panel that is used to house many of the autonomous systems.

BMW iNext: advanced electric SUV to be revealed today

The BMW iNext, an electric SUV with advanced autonomous systems, will be unwrapped later today (11 November) as the next step in the brand's transition to a maker of electric vehicles.

BMW iX

A vision is turning into reality, as the BMW Vision iNEXT becomes the BMW iX. With a year still to go before its market launch and the series development phase ongoing, the BMW Group is providing a first look ahead to the future BMW iX. With its completely newly developed, precise and minimalist design, the BMW iX is the first representative of a trailblazing generation of cars poised to redefine the driving experience, the feeling of space inside and the relationship between vehicles and those on board.

The BMW iX, whose market launch will get underway in late 2021, heralds a new age in mobility and focuses on a fresh interpretation of design, sustainability, driving pleasure, versatility and luxury. It is the first model based on a new, modular, scalable toolkit on which the future of the BMW Group will be built. Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility, the iX sees BMW redefining the successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept.

The BMW iX harnesses the latest innovations in the fields of electrification, automated driving and connectivity to deliver a mobility experience which puts people more than ever at its heart. To this end, its design has been developed from the inside out. The BMW iX has been created to provide quality of life and wellbeing for drivers and passengers. The clear and minimalist design of its exterior showcases a new form of mobility geared squarely to the needs of the vehicle's occupants. Its interior offers those on board innovative options for using the time during a journey - and enjoying relaxation, safety, security, and a new form of luxury in the process.

New BMW iX unveiled as 370+ kW electric SUV with 600+ km range

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the new all-electric BMW iX, billed as the Munich-based firm’s fresh “technology flagship”.

Set to go into production in Dingolfing from the second half of 2021, the new iX will employ two electric motors and a high-voltage battery rated (based on the brand’s “most recent calculations”) to develop more than 370 kW. That’s enough, says BMW, for a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in less than 5,0 seconds.

The company lists a power consumption figure of less than 21 kWh/100 km and a targeted range of more than 600 km (both calculated on the WLTP cycle). Thanks to a DC fast-charging function (up to 200 kW), BMW says more than 120 km of range can be added in just ten minutes. In fact, the firm claims the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 40 minutes.

Just how big is the newcomer? Well, BMW says the iX is “comparable with the BMW X5 in length and width, and is almost the same height as the BMW X6 on account of its flowing roofline”.

The BMW iX Is A 300-Mile Electric Flagship And A Huge Deal For BMW

“The BMW iNext Will Lead The Brand To Its Electric Future,” we wrote in 2019 about an upcoming fully electric crossover meant to make BMW competitive in the EV space after years of playing it safe. Now the iNext is here in production form, and it’s called the iX. Here’s what we know.

BMW has been hedging its bets on fully electric cars, relying on platforms that can accommodate a variety of different powertrain types rather than focusing on dedicated EV bones. And while the company is likely to continue with those versatile platforms for some time, the new iX, BMW makes clear in its press release, is an EV through and through. From BMW:

The BMW iX is the first model based on a new, modular, scalable architecture on which the future of the BMW Group will be built. Conceived from the outset as purely electric mobility, the iX sees BMW redefining the successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept.

What’s especially interesting about this platform is the mixed material usage. You may recall that BMW’s i3 and i8 — both rather early entrants in the EV market, and vehicles that gave BMW momentum that was arguably squandered — featured carbon-fiber bodies called Life Modules mounted to aluminum frames called Drive Modules. It was a bizarre setup, uncommon even in modern EVs

I don't know hey...these guys are on that A-grade stuff, high up there with the stars
