New BMW iX is an X5 Sized Electric SUV

The iX is not due on sale for another year, but BMW is keen to show the world what its all-electric premium SUV looks like.

Along with many premium manufacturers, BMW is pushing ahead with all-electric vehicles and specifically premium electric SUVs. We’ve already seen the iX3, which is based on the X3, revealed earlier this year but the iX is its own platform and designed to be an electric car from the conceptual phase.

BMW plans to have 5 EV models on sale by the end of 2021 and 25 in total by the end of 2023. The adoption of electric vehicles since the worldwide lockdown due to Covid19 has increased throughout Europe unexpectedly quickly and the manufacturers that are further ahead down the electric pathway are set to make early gains in market share that could be long-lasting.

The iX is about the same length as a BMW X5 and similar height to an X6 with the same wheel size as you would find on an X7.

Coming to SA?

BMW plans to put the iX into production in the second half of 2021. There is no information yet on whether it will be available locally yet but with the positive push from BMW to move towards electric, there is the intention to spread its electric lineup beyond Europe. SA will first see the iX3 on sale locally in Q4 2021 with perhaps this iX only arriving in 2022.

‘Let me unsee this’: BMW pre-empts online hate over new iX design

BMW has released a short video addressing online criticism aimed at the design language debuted by the new iX.

The two-minute clip – which we first spotted over on BMWBlog – was published on the German firm’s YouTube channel right after the unveiling of the new iX, suggesting the company was anticipating yet more backlash.

Entitled “What's your reason not to change?”, the video includes a number of comments seemingly pulled from social media, such as “Can’t you make electric cars look like normal cars?”, “Let me unsee this” and “Go back to making BMWs”.

The voiceover asks whether we somehow started “to be uncomfortable with the unknown” or if “have we just stopped being open [to] anything new”. Judging by the general tone of the YouTube comments below the video, the advert hasn’t quite had the desired effect.

BMW’s battery-powered iX crossover confirmed for South Africa

BMW showed off the next chapter in its electric car strategy with the reveal of the iX Sport Activity Vehicle last week, and now there’s good news for local electric car fans with the confirmation that the new battery-powered crossover is coming to South Africa.

A representative from BMW South Africa confirmed to IOL that the new iX “is expected to arrive in South Africa from the first quarter of 2022”.

South African car buyers looking to make the radical step to full electrification don’t have a lot of options at the moment, with the only current choices being the BMW i3, Mini Cooper SE, Jaguar I-Pace and Porsche Taycan. However, apart from the upcoming BMW iX, there are other new entrants on the way, including the Volkswagen ID.4, Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQC.

Again, the whole thing is bizarre.

The iX is BMW’s upcoming flagship electric SUV, built on an all-new modular platform and promising impressive acceleration along with 300 miles of range. But like a few other recent BMW designs, it’s got a tall grille that looks a bit buck-toothed. This, as you can read in the comments section of our article covering the vehicle’s debut, offended quite a few people. BMW knew this would happen, which is why the company got out in front of the criticism by launching an ad campaign to defend the car’s looks.

Firm marks 20 years of iDrive system and will announce "the new chapter in its display and operating system"

BMW intends to use this week's online-only 2021 Consumer Electronics Show to detail its next-generation of iDrive infotainment system.

Set to be fully detailed later this year, the system will make its debut in the iX electric SUV, shown for the first time last year and set to go on sale this autumn. It marks 20 years since the first iDrive interface was installed in a production BMW - the E65 7 Series.

The new generation system, which follows on from the current Operating System 7 software, is said to take "the burgeoning relationship between a BMW and its driver to a new level".

"The new system neatly bridges the gap between analogue and digital technology," BMW said in a statement. "And this, in turn, heralds another paradigm shift, as the number of available functions in a car and their complexity continue along a constant upward curve.

BMW announces Digital Key Plus for use with iPhone on all-electric car

BMW was the first car manufacturer to adopt Apple’s Car Key feature – enabling an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock your car – and has now announced an enhanced version known as Digital Key Plus.

Digital Key Plus uses the ultra-wideband tech found in the U1 chip in the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and Apple Watch Series 6 …

Car Key lets you store a digital version of your car key in Apple’s Wallet app. You can then unlock your car by holding your phone or watch close to the lock. This operates via NFC, so is very short range.

BMW brands its Car Key support as Digital Key. Digital Key Plus is a next-generation version which operates at longer range, and has more precise control of direction, allowing it to unlock your car without removing your iPhone from your pocket.

The carmaker says the new key system will come first to the BMW iX, an all-electric SUV with a claimed range of 300 miles. The cabin of the car – which is based on the X5/X6/X7 series – is Tesla-like in its simplicity.

BMW has detailed its new iDrive control system, confirming it will be launched in the electric-powered iX SUV before featuring in the i4 saloon later this year.

Described as the “most powerful “ yet developed by BMW, the eighth-generation system comes 20 years after iDrive made its debut in the fourth-generation 7-series, bringing with it the rotary controller and central display that continue to play a key role in the latest incarnation of the German car maker’s operating system.

Underpinning the changes is a new generation of high-resolution displays and touch controls – all supported by a significantly upgraded software package aimed at improving the speed of commands, allowing a broader range of personalized functions and more extensive over-the-air software updates with significantly faster download speeds.

The most distinctive addition to the physical components is BMW’s new curved display. In the iX, it groups a 12.3-in instrument display together with a 14.9-in infotainment display in a single panel with a resolution of 200ppi. The free standing display is mounted atop the dashboard and angled slightly towards the driver.

New (SA-bound) BMW iX line-up detailed: xDrive50 to boast 600+ km range

BMW has revealed fresh details about its new iX electric vehicle line-up, which is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.

Revealed in November 2020, the new iX will be available in two variants: iX xDrive50 and iX xDrive40 (though BMW SA says details specific to the local range will be released closer to launch).

Both feature an electric motor on each axle, with the iX xDrive50 offering a total system output of “over 370 kW” and the iX xDrive40 generating “more than 240 kW”. The former accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in “under 5,0 seconds”, with the latter taking a “shade over 6,0 seconds”, says BMW.

The iX xDrive50’s battery has a gross energy content of more than 100 kWh and a range “in excess of 600 km” on the WLTP test cycle. The iX xDrive40’s unit, meanwhile, has a listed gross energy content of over 70 kWh and a claimed range of more than 400 km. The maximum charging capacity of the iX xDrive50 is 200 kW, while that figure falls to 150 kW for the iX xDrive40.

New iX will offer a range of up to 249 miles in xDrive40 guise

BMW’s new electric flagship, the strikingly styled iX SUV, will enter full production at the firm’s Dingolfing factory in Germany later this year with a choice of two powertrains.

The newly detailed, entry-level iX xDrive40 uses the same twin-motor, four-wheel-drive configuration as the xDrive50 range-topper but with power output reduced from 500bhp to “more than 300hp” (296bhp). It has been priced to match a “comparable” conventionally fuelled BMW X5 and will start from £69,000.

Despite the power deficit, the less performance-oriented model is only around a second slower over the 0-62mph dash than the xDrive50, at “a shade over 6.0sec”, and is capable of the same 124mph top speed.

The iX xDrive40 offers a claimed range of more than 249 miles per charge from its 70kWh-plus battery pack, whereas the more expensive car’s 100kWh-plus pack boosts range to 373 miles.
