The BMW iX is back to bless/trouble your eyes. It’s back because the folks in Bavaria have announced that an iX M60 with an ‘output exceeding 600bhp’ will join the range at some point in the near future. Good grief.
Yep, BMW’s M division is working on an all-electric, all-wheel drive performance SUV. Ready the servers, the bottom hald of the internet might be about to implode…
We also now know specifics surrounding the entry-level xDrive40 and the mid-range xDrive50 that BMW confirmed back in March this year. The xDrive40 will get 320bhp and 249 miles of range from its 70kWh battery, whilst the xDrive50 gets 516bhp and 373 miles of range from a 100kWh battery. Oh, and the latter will do 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, so God only knows how quick the M60 will be.
There’ll be two trim levels for those two models in the UK from launch – Sport and M Sport – with M Sport adding a completely un-ironic ‘Aerodynamics Pack’ that includes a fancy body kit, M Sport brakes and dark headlight glass. We don’t yet know what styling changes the M60 will get.

First ride: 2021 BMW iX prototype review
We ride shotgun in the flagship electric SUV ahead of its public release later this year. Should premium rivals be worried?
We’ll need more time to confirm BMW range claims. However, we did see the equivalent of 392 miles on the digital display of the prototype when running in Eco mode. If this can be replicated in real-world driving, it’s going to be among the best in class in this particular discipline. Crucially, the new model’s power electronics system supports pre-conditioning of the battery. This allows the lithium ion battery to be cooled or heated prior to charging, which can be achieved at up to 200kW, for optimal charging times.
Its styling is unconventional – bewildering even, from certain angles, to these eyes. But if the iX can convince us as much from behind the steering wheel as it does from the passenger seat when we finally get to drive it, the incumbent electric SUV protagonists are set to be in for some extra-stiff competition when it reaches the UK later this year. It is clearly a different kind of BMW in many aspects – not least its concept-car-like interior, but for now the key attributes of performance, dynamic finesse and overall refinement appear to be high among its appeal.

New 2022 BMW iX: high-tech SUV priced from £69,905
UK trim and pricing confirmed for new iX, which offers range of up to 249 miles in xDrive40 guise
BMW’s new electric flagship, the strikingly styled iX SUV, will launch in the UK in November with a choice of two powertrains and pricing starting from £69,905.
The entry-level iX xDrive40 uses the same twin-motor, four-wheel-drive configuration as the xDrive50 range-topper but with power output reduced from 500bhp to 296bhp. It has been priced to match a “comparable” conventionally fuelled BMW X5. A range-topping iX M60 version will be launched later this year.
The iX xDrive 40 can complete the 0-62mph dash in 6.1 seconds, with a 124mph top speed. The iX xDrive40 offers a claimed range of more than 249 miles per charge from its 70kWh-plus battery pack, which can be charged at up to 150kW.
Meanwhile, the iX xDrive 50 will be priced from £91,905 and will offer 516bhp, a 0-62mph time of 4.6secs and the same limited 124mph top speed. It has a 100kWh-plus pack boosts range to 373 miles, and features 200kW charging. It also features active steering and air suspension.
Both models will be offered in the UK in Sport and M Sport trims. As standard, Sport includes a 12.3in digital instrument display, which links with the 14.9in touchscreen to create a 'curved' display unit, an 18-speaker Harmon/Kardon audio system, 21in wheels and a range of driver assistance systems.
M Sport trim adds an aerodynamics pack with bespoke front and side aprons, rear diffuser and air curtain, M Sport brakes and an Anthracite roof.

BMW has fully announced the first-ever i4 and iX EV’s and both will be available in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.

If a crossover is more your style, then the new BMW iX is for you. It will be launched with a choice of two model variants. Both are equipped with an electric all-wheel-drive system, with a combined output of 516 hp (385 kW) in the BMW iX xDrive50 and 240 kW in the BMW iX xDrive40. The drive technology’s efficiency paired to the very latest battery cell technology results in WLTP-calculated ranges of up to 630 km in the BMW iX xDrive50 and up to 425 km in the BMW iX xDrive40.
The BMW iX xDrive50 posts acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while the BMW iX xDrive40 hits the same mark from rest in 6.1 seconds.
Like the i4, the crossover has a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control screen in a single, curved bezel. It runs iDrive 8. A head-up display shows the speed, navigation details, warnings from driver assistance systems, and other data

BMW launches iX electric vehicle in the US starting at $83,200
BMW has now launched the iX xDrive50, the production version of its iNext concept electric vehicle, in the US and confirmed the starting price of $83,200.
We previously reported on some confusion about the price of the iX.
When it was still known as the iNext, BMW was claiming that it would be a Tesla Model 3 competitor.
The EV community was excited about that since the Model 3 was becoming a BMW 3-Series competitor, and it was believed that the German automaker would release an electric vehicle at around $40,000.
However, the iNext program evolved into a luxury crossover, and earlier this year, BMW confirmed that it would start at over $80,000.
Now, BMW is officially launching the iX xDrive50 in the US and confirmed a MSRP of $83,200 plus $995 in destination fees:

Founded in the United Kingdom in 1966, Bowers & Wilkins has been at the forefront of high-performance audio technology for more than five decades, the perfect company to partner with, then for the high-end audio system in BMW’s cutting-edge electric SAV (sports activity vehicle) the iX.
The iX is the first fully electric vehicle to feature Diamond Dome tweeters, as found in Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers, the monitor loudspeaker of choice at the world’s most famous recording studios, Abbey Road Studios. The partnership between the famed loudspeaker company and BMW aims to deliver an “audio experience that feels as though you are sitting with the artist in the studio,” what Bowers & Wilkins refer to as “True Sound.”
Nautilus swirls are spiralling channels which sit behind the tweeter domes. They dissipate reflected sound waves that emanate from the rear of the drive unit and limit distortion, allowing for incredibly accurate, low-distortion tweeters. These sit behind brushed stainless-steel covers with a laser-etched logo and, as you’d expect from BMW, feature an ambient lighting effect too. The door speakers are discretely hidden behind acoustically optimized fabric in order to fit in with the iX’s slick and minimalist cabin.
The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond audio system will be available as an optional extra in the BMW iX when the EV goes on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.

BMW will do battery versions all its mainstream models – as it already has with the Mini Electric and iX3 – but it also wanted to build this all-in electric car as a showcase for its best work on materials, aerodynamics and driver assist.
BMW isn't selling this as a driver's champion. If you want a traditional BMW sports saloon that happens to be electric, the i4 is your car. The iX is a big comfy home-on-wheels, and a vast amount of technology has been poured into making sure the driver is soothed while the passengers kick back. It's efficient for a full-size e-SUV. The range is impressive, and it can recharge pretty rapidly too.
Choose carefully from among the visual option packs, wheels and paint. Then you might find an iX you can like the look of. There's a lot else to like.
