BMW X1 - Help me choose

As many other members have pointed out. The diesel is a much more reliable vehicle. At 100kkm,there is no cambelt work to be done. Because there isnt one.

Forgetting the torque and power.
The 2.0D is magic when mated to the auto transmission.

Get the diesel. Make double sure on the spec. Don't lay down decent money for a car that doesn't have auto climate or drl's etc.

And look at s drives and not x drives. X drives are more complicated for not much benefit.

Car was given a 21 point check before purchase all fine. In January i noticed the engine was making a weird noise and took the car in. SMG BMW informed the noise was nothings serious but that the brakes would need to be done.

Move fwd 5 months and last Monday I switched the car and it made a weird noise. I drove it for less than a km and called SMG to ask them for advice. They told me to bring the car in the very next day. I started the car again and continued to drive back home and all of a sudden the car came to a jolt and died. Towed the car to BMW.

To cut a long story short it seems the timing chain has broken. Ive done numerous searches on this and it turns out its a worldwide problem with certain engines built from 2011-2014. BMW are currently in litigation regarding this issue. Anyone know more about this problem and who i could perhaps take my case too?

They have quoted me R180k for a new engine with a 2 year warranty or R38k to repair engine with no warranty. I have presented my case to BMW South Africa and waiting for feedback. This whole affair has left me destroyed and I have no faith in this brand.

There's nothing the driver can do to damage a cam belt or chain. BMW need to come to the party if it has been regularly serviced.

yeah exactly, milage will tell you if the chain etc has been replaced previously

Dont mean to be "that guy" but...

Now you know.. dont trust a dealership just because they say they giving you a 21 point check. Rather deal with a different company might cost a little at first and take it for a proper testing.

Edit: Stealerships will say and do anything to make a sale. Unless you find a gem of a person

Those are my thoughts exactly and considering BMW are currently in litigation for this specific issue. You can google BMW N20 class action lawsuit. Its actually coming to a head next month.

Its just impossible to accept since this car has such low mileage and not that old. Has been serviced regularly by BMW. I have never felt so ripped off. Im hoping BMW SA are at least willing to assist with some of the costs.

The car was bought from a private seller but before i purchased I took it to BMW for a 21 point check and to have a look at the cars maintenance history all came back clear and ok. They got nothing out of the sale

If there is a class action suit pertaining to that motor, you can probably strongarm them with the motoring ombudsman considering that there is something clearly wrong with its design.

Some lessons have to be learned the hard way. The odds of you getting anything out of BMW is next to nothing. Make peace with it and make do with what you have.

Get the diesel. That is all.

Its lighter on fuel. It has more torque.

This specific 2.0d has proven to be very reliable if looked after, even at high mileage. I had the 320d for 5 years and it was magic.

Same. 320d here and it’s been nothing short of wonderful. Sips fuel, torque for days and has not given me any trouble. Done over 100k in her and I’m still happy. Wasn’t a diesel fan before this because of the sound, until I drove it.

That is a common failure on those engine for that period, also look for the timing guides to be replaced before purchasing.
You can drop in a new engine or you can assess the damaged done it could be salvageable if you have a good mechanic. My friend has a F30 316i and it had the same issue, noticed a timing chain sound, took the car to BMW they quoted R80 000.00 for the guides replacement and new chain, we ended up doing it ourselves for just under R10 000.00 and the car is running smooth no issues at all

Did you not get the drivetrain warning on the dash? a lot of my other friends got that message on the dash before it destroyed itself.

This is true, BMW is not going to assist in anyway.

They did repair a few of these cases under warranty but if you have no motorplan its gonna be costly.

You say you in ligitation at the moment, with whom? the previous owner? BMW?
If the previous owner took the car in under warranty and requested that the chain and guides be replaced BMW would have done it under the warranty well from what I hear they have done it for a few people I know under warranty.

Out of warranty, you don't have much to stand on.

Timing chain damage is usually due to poor oil maintenance. What's the mileage and how often was the oil changed?
