BMW X1 - Help me choose

Hey guys

Buying an X1 and I have 2 choices at the mo'.

2011 model - 100K mileage automatic 1.8 steptronic - immaculate condition FSH - R160K can maybe push R155K

2012 model - 60K mileage manual 2.0 xdrive - immaculate condition FSH - R165K non negotiable

I did have my heart set on an automatic but dunno which is the better buy? Im a car noob and have never owned anything to write home about. Currently driving a 2004 Ford Bantam :laugh:

Those engines aren’t great at high mileage, so you’d probably be better off with the manual.

The manuals are pretty comfortable and lower risk but obviously if you’re sick of clutch control, that won’t matter.

Check for white smoke out the back of any noticeable rattles as that’ll tell you a lot about the engine condition. White smoke being busted seals and a relatively costly repair.
 
Tbh its not a clincher for me. The fact that the 2012 model has only 60K on the clock and is driven by a female kindergarten teacher makes me think its the better buy ;) Thanks for your reply. Car is also going for a 20 point check at BMW SMG so I would hope they would pick that problem up?

Keep Looking for a Auto 2.0D sdrive

Also check the options, the X1's came very sparse on extras.
 
Hey man thanks for replying. I havent Im not sure of the different models. The 2012 one is an Sdrive 20i and the 2011 model is a SDrive18i Steptronic.

Im assuming this is a diesel version? Why the push for diesel engine? Dont even know the difference except for the petrol pumps.

Man I wish my pops had given me car advice when i was younger. :cautious:

Get the diesel. That is all.

Its lighter on fuel. It has more torque.

This specific 2.0d has proven to be very reliable if looked after, even at high mileage. I had the 320d for 5 years and it was magic.
 
At those prices and mileage... the 2012 model without a doubt...

The 2011 model is WAY over priced.

This is exactly what i looked at and was like WTF.. why u checking out gear type when km on clock vs maintenance is whats more important. At 100k on the clock i am thinking the cambelt change is due which is easily +9k in cost.

so yah.. 40k km less for the same price... i'd not even consider no matter what my preference is on gear type
 
The diesel would be my first choice in terms of reliability and performance, but they are more expensive.
 
Yikes this thread has made me think twice now. Man I was so sure on one of these and now everyone is telling to me go diesel. Maybe I should just get me an EcoSport and leave the BM's to the big boys.

Thanks man that was my initial though anyways. With such low mileage Im hoping to be trouble free for a while. Also thinking of getting a 2 year warranty.

See you went from an X1 to EcoSport, two very different cars, maybe if you give us your requirements we would be about to suggest something for you.

I advised on diesel earlier based that the diesel is more fuel efficient as this is a big heavy vehicle, I owned a E30, E36 and E46 BMW and I know those cars tend to have a lot of weight.

The diesel also has plenty of torque so that's an added bonus.

I currently drive a FOrd Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost titanium and its very light on fuel if you drive it correctly. If you have a heavy foot it can start to get thirsty, my car is about 4 years old with +/-50k on the clock. If I had to go back and do it again I would have settled for a 320D, Yes the price of the 320D would have been more than the fiesta and the Fiesta is better specc'ed in titanium. I guess I miss the rear wheel drive sedan.

Also when my Fiesta went in for work to be done I was given an Ecoboost Ecosport to run around with I prefer the Fiesta over that unless you have a need for a small SUV ( dogs, Kids) I was also given the 1.5 Ecoboost Kuga once and I was Wowed what an underrated car it was awesome balance of power and economy. My friend has a Focus with that same engine and I was blown away by that car as well.

Enough of me going around in circles here.

Maybe if you give us your needs we can better advise you.

I dont think a 2.0d X1 would qualify as big boys toys. As mentioned the engine is rock solid, reliable and will last very long. Cost of purchase is not too high, cost of ownership is sensible too.

The biggest aspect would be to perform due diligence prior to purchase. Review motorplan history, and potential post motorplan services. Look at what was replaced, and what preventative maintenance was done. If the car was looked after, and if you look after it, it will look after you.
