Wanted proof that the crossover craze is showing no signs of abating? Here's the new BMW Concept X2, an even-numbered, low-roofed SUV bringing the slammed X6/X4 vibe to a smaller, more affordable package.

It's the big news from BMW at the 2016 Paris motor show, which kicked off in earnest on 29 September.

BMW Concept X2: the lowdown

On the grand scale of concept cars, the X2 looks very close to production for us. Sure, strip away the 21-inch alloy wheels and pop some conventional door mirrors on, but the overall volumes are said to be close to what you can expect in showrooms by late 2017.

Note the difference in volumes of the headlamps and grille; lights are getting ever-slimmer, shrunk by LED and laser technology, while designers seem hellbent on making air apertures even bigger, with the deepest twin-kidneys we've seen in ages on a small Beemer.

There's plenty of 'shark-nose' wedge at the front end and BMW has crafted just enough slammed, low-roof coupe-alike athleticism to warrant the even-number badge, highlighting the sportier crossover billing.

BMW now reserves the even numbers for sportier SUVs (X4 and X6); the more family-focused, upright crossovers use odd digits (X1, X3, X5).

The design team on the X2

'The BMW Concept X2 is a vehicle for active people looking for a combination of enjoyment and practicality,' said the group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. 'The concept displays a new and exciting facet of the BMW brand within the compact segment.'

Silver faux-off-roader plastic cladding may not appeal to BM fans, but we reckon some of the detailing is neat, especially the BMW roundel on the C-pillar, referencing the legendary M1 supercar from the 1970s.

No technical details have been issued about the X2; this is strictly a design study, not a working technical showcase.

However, it doesn't take a super-sleuth to work out that this new model will be based on the hardware you'll find under any of BMW's small cars; expect transverse engines and front- or four-wheel drive to feature in production, as Munich switches its junior ranges to the same FWD architecture you'll find on the latest Mini.

A new model BMW that actually looks good.
It would probably have just such a nice price tag on it

Stunning, wish they had an x4 that looked like this. X2 should be a bit small to take the kids on holiday with.

What is this new crap with BMW front wheel drive though!?

BMW boss promises ‘biggest model offensive ever’

BMW Group CEO Harald Krüger says the German automaker will unveil as many as 40 new or revamped models over the next two years.

This, according to the Munich-based automaker’s boss, will be the group’s “biggest model offensive ever”.

In 2016, Mercedes-Benz grabbed the global luxury sales crown from its German rival, and BMW’s new strategy is likely at least partly a response to this.

“We are launching the biggest model offensive ever,” Krüger said, according to Automotive News. “We have started a transformation unlike anything our company has seen before.”

The new BMW X2 and the long-awaited*X7 (in 2018) to top the brand’s ever-popular SUV range will be included in the deluge*of 40 new or updated variants coming in the next 24 months.

The eighth-generation Rolls-Royce Phantom will arrive late in 2017, while BMW Motorrad customers can also look forward as many as 14 new or revised models this year alone. No mention of new Mini products was made.

Krüger explained that the plan was to make BMW “the strongest brand in this [the luxury] segment and significantly increase our sales volumes and revenues here by 2020”.

BMW X2 patents show it will retain concept looks for production

X2 patents follow sightings of a prototype spotted testing on the Nurburgring with minimal tweaks to the concept’s design; an M-fettled version is coming, but no X2 M yet

Patents for the upcoming BMW X2 have been filed with Japanese authorities, revealing how similar the production model will be to the concept it is based on.

The X2 will slot between the second-generation X1 and the current X3 in BMW's line-up when it goes on sale in the second quarter of next year.

Based on the same platform as the Mini Countryman, the X2 was previewed by a thinly disguised concept car at the Paris motor show in September.

BMW officials have already confirmed to Autocar that the X2 will follow the example of the larger X4 and X6 in receiving a uniquely styled steel body. Recent spy pictures show the X2 will be significantly longer and wider than the X1, with a shorter rear overhang and high-set bonnet. The extreme angle of the tailgate is designed to give the X2 a more coupé-like silhouette, differentiating it from the more practical X1.

Much of the dramatic X2 concept’s looks have been carried over to the production model, although the window line has been lowered to create a larger glasshouse, and the front lights have been widened.

A brace of 148bhp, 187bhp and 227bhp 2.0-litre diesels bearing xDrive18d, xDrive20d and xDrive25d badges will be available from the car's launch. Six-speed manual or auto ‘boxes will be available across the range.

One petrol will be available at launch; the xDrive20i, with a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit producing 189bhp. A hotter, circa 300bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol will come later with induction system changes and other tweaks, likely with M badging akin to the 2 Series M40i. It’s unlikely that a full-fat X2 M will arrive anytime soon, though.

The X2 will be produced alongside the X1 at BMW’s Regensburg factory in Germany, unlike the first-generation X1 which was built alongside the 1 Series and 3 Series at the company’s Leipzig plant. Increasing demand for key models and the establishment of production lines for the i3 electric car and i8 hybrid sports car at that site has forced BMW to reorganise its strategy.

Rivals for the X2 include the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Volvo XC60. It’s expected that the X2 will start at around £30,000, and fills the only gap in BMW’s X SUV lineup, ahead of the launch of the X7 early next year.

Stop it BMW.

HERE’S A SNEAK PEEK AT THE NEW BMW X2

Late last year, BMW announced it would built an X2 that would slot in above the X1 (sharing its XKL platform) and below the family-focused X3. The crossover is expected to receive its official reveal in 2018, but thanks to High Snobiety, we now have an idea of what to expect from the sport compact crossover.

The British lifestyle publication gained access to an pre-production X2 to capture these pictures of it in an urban environment.

While most of the panels are different compared with those of the concept revealed last year, the X2 retains a lot of that vehicle’s proportioning (from what we can see through the lurid camouflage, at least). It’s resemblance to the X1 is also obvious.

The X2 will be officially revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

New BMW X2 Images Revealed

Earlier this year our spy photographers captured images of the BMW X2 undergoing testing and BMW has now released official images showing the new X2 prowling in the urban jungle. The development of the X2 is just about complete and is expected to be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

After seeing how successful the Range Rover Evoque has been, it makes perfect sense for BMW to tackle the luxury lifestyle SUV market. The SUV market has really taken off and BMW already has the X1, X3, X4, X5 and X6. The X2 will logically sit between the compact X1 and the mid-size X3. A big X7 is expected in 2018.

The upcoming BMW X2 will look to capitalise on a booming SUV market.

The new BMW X2 will be riding on the same UKL platform which underpins the X1. Expect the base spec models to feature front-wheel drive, with the mid-to-top specs boasting xDrive all-wheel drive capability. In terms of engines, almost the entire BMW power plant portfolio will be on tap. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol should be kicking off the range and you will be able to choose from an array of both petrol and diesel powertrains. We doubt there will be a manual gearbox option. Expect to see the new BMW X2 revealed in its entirety at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show and we'll be in attendance.

We will keep you informed as soon as more information becomes available.

BMW X2

The BMW X2 is more than just a new BMW X model. With its unmistakable design and sporty, urban genes, it makes a confident impression both in its class and within the BMW X model family.

The Sports Activity Coupe goes above and beyond any rival past or present in bringing joy and driving pleasure to the segment. Its inimitable character appeals most strongly to young, extrovert and active people who attach great value to individuality, genuine fun at the wheel and lifestyle matters, without wanting to leave themselves short on functionality.

The car's chassis and xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system promise undiluted driving fun, and cutting-edge engines strike the ideal balance between sporting dynamics and exceptional efficiency. The digital services from BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW ConnectedDrive Services - both of which are now available in freshly updated form - add further intensity to the overall BMW X2 experience.

Design

The bold, uncompromising nature of the new BMW X2 is evident at first sight. This vehicle stands out from the crowd in any setting. Even next to its bigger brothers, the BMW X4 and X6, the BMW X2 makes a wholly distinctive impression. The main contributing factor here is the car's exterior design, which essentially combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupe with the robust construction of a BMW X model.

"The BMW X2 represents an expression of modern and extrovert vehicle dynamics," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, in describing the new BMW X2. "Its standalone vehicle concept brings a new, fresh and exciting facet of the BMW to the compact segment."

On the road, the BMW X2 has the poise of an athlete in peak condition. This is true for the basic version and even more so for M Sport and M Sport X models. The BMW X2 M Sport X combines design elements from BMW M and the BMW X family.
