BMW X2

Behold the new, embiggened BMW X2 and all-electric iX2

And of course, that includes the kidney grille… yours from £39k and up

This is the all-new, second-generation X2, and like most BMWs these days it wants your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle. Yup, the kidney grille is bigger and bolder than before.

Much like the rest of the car: the X2 has grown in every direction, now longer (by 194mm), wider (by 21mm) and taller (up 64mm despite the more coupe-like sloping roofline) than the Mk1. Meanwhile the wheelbase has grown by 22mm, and BMW promises more shoulder and elbow room for all five passengers.

You have three powertrain options; two petrol, one electric. The entry car is the sDrive20i powered by a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine producing 168bhp. That’s enough for 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds and fuel economy of 47.1mpg, claims BMW.

Then there’s the much fruitier M35i xDrive, which gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder (and quad exhausts?) capable of 296bhp and 295lb ft. Oh, now the pipes make sense. 0-62mph takes just 5.4 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155mph. M Compound brakes - 385mm up front and 330mm at the rear, with grey callipers - are optional. Both combustion cars get a seven-speed auto.

BMW iX2

The BMW X2 is the car that first introduced the vehicle concept of a Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) for the premium compact segment. And now the even more distinctive, even sportier and even more forward-looking second generation is taking to the stage. Significantly larger dimensions and a pronounced coupé silhouette clearly showcase in its exterior design the development leap taken by the new BMW X2. The progressive character of the new model is also evident in the fully electric BMW iX2 variant, as well as in a large spread of systems enabling automated driving and parking, and in the innovative digital services laid on by the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9.

The worldwide market launch will get underway in March 2024 with the all-electric BMW iX2 xDrive30, BMW X2 M35i xDrive performance model, one other petrol option and one diesel model. In summer 2024 a second fully electric variant and another diesel-engined example will be added to the line-up.

The new BMW X2 and new BMW iX2 will be produced flexibly on a single assembly line at BMW Group Plant Regensburg. The high-voltage batteries for the fully electric model variant are also made at the Regensburg site. The new BMW iX2 sees the BMW Group further accelerating the ramp-up of electric mobility. Added to which, the progressive premium character profile of the compact SAC is underscored by further advances in sustainability encompassing the complete vehicle lifecycle - from resource-preserving production through the use phase to subsequent recycling.

Bigger and bolder: new BMW X2 revealed, South African line-up confirmed

The second-generation BMW X2, revealed to the world on Wednesday, gets a bold new look, up to date tech and significantly larger dimensions.

Set to be launched in South Africa during the first quarter of 2024, the new BMW X2 is 194mm longer than its predecessor as well as 21mm wider and 64mm taller, while sharing its 2,692mm wheelbase with the latest-generation BMW X1.

BMW has also announced an all-electric iX2 version for the first time, featuring a twin-motor drivetrain that offers 230kW and 474Nm, but this won’t be available in South Africa.

Instead our market will receive two petrol-powered options, these being the X2 M35i xDrive performance model and sDrive18i. The former will add some sparkle to BMW’s local compact line-up, given that the X1 M35i isn’t offered here.

Thankfully South Africa isn’t getting the 221kW detuned M35i that’s being sold in Europe, instead our version will be good for 233kW. Of course, xDrive all-wheel drive, adaptive M suspension and M Compound brakes are also part of the deal.

BMW introduces the all-new iX2

BMW just introduced the all-new BMW X2 series, including for the first time an EV, the iX2. Coming in a single xDrive30 version, the electric X2 has a rather polarizing design.

The iX2 xDrive30 features dual motor setup, one at the front axle and one at the rear. This is the same powertrain that BMW iX1 xDrive30 uses. These two motors combine to churn out 230 kW/313 hp in boost mode and up to 494 Nm (364 lb-ft) of torque. These help launch the compact Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), as BMW calls the iX2, from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 5.6 seconds, capping off at a top speed of 180 km/h.
