BMW kicks off production of the new iX2 in its Regensburg factory

BMW introduced its iX2 fully-electric compact SUV a month ago and the now company announced the start of the production in its Regensburg factory in Germany. The factory is responsible for the entire X2 lineup, along with the BMW 1 Series and BMW X1.

For the past couple of months, BMW's engineers were working on integrating the drivetrain into one production line for all of the vehicle types - ICE, PHEV and BEV. Up to 1,000 BMW 1 Series, X1, X2 and iX2 units will now roll out of the factory every day.

BMW is able to reach that production capacity by implementing night shifts in three-shift operations. That's needed because all units sold worldwide come out of the Regensburg plant.

BMW unveils new i5 xDrive40 and iX2 eDrive20

BMW is freshening up its electric vehicle portfolio in time for the spring. As part of its ambitious plans for 2024 that include 20% increase in EV sales, the company is introducing new models to cater to an even wider customer base.

Both BMW i5 and iX2 get new powertrains, the XM gets a hybrid 50e version with a 197 hp electric motor. The diesel-powered X2 gets a mild-hybrid 48V setup as well, to improve efficiency.

The new i5 xDrive40 will slot between the existing eDrive40 and the top-of-the-range M60 (we have a review and real-life range test?). As the “x” suggests, the new i5 comes with two electric motors powering all four wheels. The combined power output is 394 hp (290 kW) and the torque stands at 590 Nm - that’s enough to catapult this rather substantial sedan from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds - 0.6 of a second quicker than the i5 eDrive40.

There is no change in the battery department - it is has the same 81.2 kWh usable capacity as the other i5 models. The WLTP-rated range is 538 km, lower than the 582 km of the eDrive 40, but above the 516 km WLTP of the M60.

BMW X2 (2024) Price & Specs

The new BMW X2 will launch in South Africa very soon. Here’s how much the 2nd-gen coupé-style crossover – including the 233 kW flagship X2 M35i xDrive – will cost you in Mzansi…

Though the new BMW X2 was revealed as recently as October 2023, the Bavarian firm’s 2nd stab at an X1-based coupé-style crossover is already well on its way to South Africa, with the company’s local division having already released pricing via its online configurator. Expect to see the first units on the roads very soon.

As expected, the local line-up comprises a pair of derivatives at launch: the X2 sDrive18i M Sport and the flagship X2 M35i xDrive (thanks to the lightning-fast folks over at duoporta.com for alerting us to this release!). Interestingly, neither the oil-burning X2 sDrive18d nor the fully electric iX2 variant appear to be on the cards for a local introduction for now.

How much does the new BMW X2 cost in South Africa?

BMW X2 sDrive18i M Sport – R878 804

BMW X2 M35i – R1 222 599

The prices above include a 2-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Why are the warranty periods on some of these newer spec cars so brief...as if warranty will be soon only covered until you get home from the dealership ?

BMW Centurion showed their first customer delivery of an X2 35i on Facebook.
