Summary

If you’re in the market for a compact luxury car, but find the BMW X1 a trifle too mainstream and, well, predictable for your taste, the X2 offers the kind of standout presence that will draw admiring, if not downright envious, glances from other road users. While mechanical differences between the X1 and the X2 are minor, their executions are quite different; the bolder X2 feels more energetic and spirited to pilot.

Given the R50k premium that the U10 X2 demands over its conventional and identically-powered X1 sibling (in the case of the sDrive18i M Sport), BMW’s newcomer doesn’t represent great value for money, but it’s a heart-over-head proposition – and its nonconformist appeal should win it more than a few fans.

Verdict

The BMW iX2 xDrive30 is one of the best daily drivers you can get today. It excels in a number of ways and has no significant shortcomings. The iX2 is a highly competent vehicle and while its design is rather controversial, it can do a lot and also bring a smile on your face when provoked.

The infotainment is among the best in the industry, while the materials ooze luxury. Despite some bad plastics here and there, the interior is a great place to spend time in and sets a really high standard for the competition. The spacious trunk adds to the great usability of what initially appeared as an impractical SUV-coupe.

The top reasons to stay away from the iX2 is the oversteering under pressure and general vague steering. And while those might not seem important in a car of this class these qualities are responsible for a big part of BMW's cult following. The weight is also noticeable at most occasions and the suspension has to do extra work to balance such huge mass on the road.

If you do decide on getting one, the xDrive30 powertrain is a fantastic choice with sufficient power and sublime efficiency. The xDrive AWD system also helps with grip in tricky conditions, ultimately benefiting safety.

Review: BMW X2 M35i is unique, fun and more sophisticated than before

VERDICT

At R1.22 million, the BMW X2 M35i is a unique, fun and sophisticated package and there aren’t a lot of direct rivals out there.

But keep in mind that a Volkswagen Tiguan R will give you similar performance, albeit in a more sober wrapping, for R1,082,100, while the more potent five-cylinder Audi RSQ3 starts at R1,309,500.
