Leaks are out for the all-new 4th Gen X5. Front is heavily new X3 inspired.

BMW X5 styling leaks onto internet early

Next BMW X5 will share underpinnings with the current 7 Series and have plug-in hybrid and performance variants. It's confirmed for launch in the second half of the year

BMW's next-generation X5 has been shown in images leaked onto the internet by a Russian car site.

Large twin kidney grilles take inspiration from other recently revealed models, while slim rear taillights mark the car out from the smaller X3. It's the first uncamouflaged look we've had at the car, although BMW officially previewed the SUV in hard testing shots a few weeks ago.

The X5 and X5 M models tested in numerous conditions pre-launch, including the Nürburgring and Talladega circuit in Alabama, BMW's own proving ground in the South of France, and on public roads in Scandinavia, as the brand put the finishing touches to its Porsche Cayenne-rivalling model range. BMW boss Harald Krüger confirmed at the brand's Annual General Meeting that the X5 will arrive later this year; an October sales launch is anticipated.

Little information has been revealed alongside the shots, but BMW confirmed that an offroad pack will be able to change the car's characteristics to suit different terrains at the push of a button.

Previously, our spy photographers laid eyes on a new X5 M prototype that's been caught wearing production bodywork, providing a glimpse of what's to come from the most potent model. Beneath its nose is a heavily tweaked version of the current M SUV's twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8, and is likely to produce the same 592bhp as the latest M5 super saloon.

That'd give it 25bhp more than the current X5 M and 30bhp more than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, ensuring the next X5 M becomes one of the market's most focused performance SUVs. The battle will heat up further when the next-generation Mercedes-AMG GLE 63, another of the X5 M's archrivals, reaches our roads at the start of next year with 603bhp from its new 'hot-vee' V8 motor.

BMW's performance push won't end with the new car's uprated powertrains, however, because, along with the rest of the new X5 range, the X5 M is set to benefit from the use of a much lighter structure. All models will be built using the same CLAR (cluster architecture) platform as the 7 Series, which incorporates steel, aluminium, carbonfibre and magnesium to offer a sizeable reduction in weight.

This diet will have a profound impact across the board, benefitting ride and economy in normal models while also edging the lightest model (currently it's the xDrive35i) below the two tonne mark for the first time. Expect the X5 M's straight-line performance to profit from this slimming, giving it strong potential to edge its 0-62mph time beneath 4secs.

Underneath the top M model will be another eight-cylinder-powered variant to replace the current xDrive50i. Using a less strained version of the 4.4-litre engine, its output will surpass 450bhp to align it close to the Cayenne GTS from Porsche. BMW will also continue to produce a plug-in hybrid variant that's likely to mix a 2.0-litre petrol engine with electric power, like in the current xDrive40e. Expect an enhanced all-electric range of more than 25 miles; the latest 5 Series with this engine is capable of 29 miles, although it is considerably lighter and more aerodynamic.

Despite ongoing pressure from regulators for diesel to be phased out, demand in the large SUV segment for oil burning engines remains strong. As such, BMW will continue to offer diesel power but all of its models will feature new particulate filters to conform to the upcoming Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), which comes into force this September, as well as increased turbo pressure. As such, the X5's 2.0-litre four-pot and 3.0-litre six-pot diesel options will remain in the line-up, but offer significantly cleaner tailpipe emissions along with improved economy.

The X5 will match its latest CLAR siblings, which also include the new 5 Series range and next 3 Series, by gaining the latest version of its iDrive cabin technology. Expect the gesture control of the 7 Series to filter into the X5, but the new tech won't spell the end of the rotary control located on the transmission tunnel. This feature will remain the main way to control the infotainment system.

The 7 Series's Level 2 autonomous capability - allowing it to control throttle, brakes and steering, but requiring a human to keep their hands on the wheel - will be incorporated into the X5, as will its self-parking function that allows the driver to step out of the car and engage the technology remotely.

Also borrowed from the 7 Series will be two-axle air suspension, although it'll be an option for the X5 (it's standard on the 7 Series saloon). This will give greater control of ride height than the current X5's rear-axle-only air suspension, while also enhancing ride comfort further. Lower ranking models will make do with steel springs but be available with adaptive damping technology to broaden their capabilities over a variety of surfaces.

The next X5 will be the first BMW SUV in non-coupé form that doesn't sit atop of its range. This crowning position will be taken by the X7, which is due on roads this December and was previewed with the X7 iPerformance concept at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. BMW has released official images of its development car since, showing how much larger it will be compared to the X5.

BMW X5

Eye-catching off-road attributes and assured performance on rough ground combined with the premium characteristics and signature dynamics of a BMW: this was the blueprint with which BMW launched the all-new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) category almost 20 years ago. The first example of the breed was the BMW X5, making it the founding father of the BMW X model family and the market leader in the premium all-wheel drive segment - a status it maintains to this day.

More than 2.2 million examples of the BMW X5 have been sold across its three model generations. And the new car puts down another marker in terms of design and technology. The new BMW X5 will again be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina. This centre of expertise for BMW X models also handles production of the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X6 - and will soon add the BMW X7 to its roster as well. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW X5 will begin in November 2018.

New design language exudes robust assurance and authority

A wheelbase 42 mm longer than its predecessor's (now 2,975 millimetres), a 36 mm increase in vehicle length (to 4,922 millimetres), an extra 66 mm of width (now 2,004 millimetres) and a 19 mm increase in height (to 1,745 millimetres) give the new BMW X5 both an imposing appearance and generous levels of space for passengers and their luggage. The latest X5 retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, but the pared-back design language - clean surfacing and precise lines accentuating the car's robustness, elegant poise and muscular authority - is new. A powerfully sculpted bonnet, a short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic sweep of the roofline provide further references to the sporty yet rugged character of the new X5.

The BMW X5 embodies the origins of the BMW X family and, in its fourth generation, sends out its most powerful message yet in terms of presence and modernity," says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. "It defines a new X design language - robust, clear and precise."

The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney grille with single-piece surround. The new BMW X5 comes as standard with LED headlights, while BMW Laserlight with Adaptive LED Headlights can be specified as an option. This system employs a BMW Laserlight spotlight with Selective Beam to optimise the high beam function, and as a result the range of the non-dazzling high beam has been increased to around 500 metres. Blue x-shaped elements, which split up the hexagonal light sources inside the familiar BMW twin headlights, make a distinctive visual statement.

The precise character line in the car's flanks, which rises up at the rear door, contributes to the modern appearance of the new X5. It defines the car's powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear lights, which extend well into the flanks. At the rear, too, all the lights feature LED technology. The three-dimensional design of their glass covers lends them a sculpted, technical edge. Diagonal accent lines give the rear a compact and brawny appearance.

xLine and M Sport model variants, options from BMW Individual

Distinctive design features mark out the xLine and M Sport model variants of the new X5. The xLine model uses exterior cues including kidney grill bars in aluminium matt, an underguard, roof rails and side window surrounds in Aluminium satinated, plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome, to accentuate the off-road character of the new BMW X5. M Sport specification, meanwhile, sees the wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underguard and side skirts painted in body colour. Added to which, the extra-large air intakes at the front end, the aluminium matt kidney grille bars, and the roof rails, side window surrounds and other trim elements in high-gloss black flag up the dynamic potential of the SAV.

The new BMW X5 comes as standard with 18-inch light-alloy wheels, the xLine model features its own 19-inch light-alloy wheels and M Sport brings 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design. Further variants in 18- to 22-inch formats are available as options.

The new BMW X5 will also be available from launch with model-specific options from BMW Individual. Indeed, customers looking to bring extra exclusivity to the exterior design of their car can specify the BMW Individual paint finish Sunstone metallic, extended BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, tinted headlights and rear lights, painted BMW Individual brake callipers and 21-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels.

New (fourth-generation) BMW X5 officially revealed!

BMW has taken the wraps off its new X5, promising that the fourth generation of its large SUV combines “the ability to venture off road” with a “talent for dynamic driving pleasure on it”.

The Bavarian automaker says new chassis systems such as two-axle air suspension, integral active steering and an off-road package make their debut on the fresh-faced X5.

The latest model’s wheelbase measures 2 975 mm, making it some 42 mm longer between the axles than its forebear. Overall, vehicle length increases 36 mm to 4 922 mm, while an extra 66 mm of width (now at 2 004 mm) and 19 mm of height (to 1 745 mm) afford the new X5 more cabin space.

The Munich-based brand says that the 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest increases the 645-litre boot capacity to a utility space of 1 860 litres. At a later stage, BMW says a third row of seats for two additional passengers will be offered as an option. Interestingly, the new BMW X5 also features a two-section tailgate.

At the vehicle’s global launch, there will be a choice of one V8 and three six-cylinder inline engines, all mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. However, only the oil-burning X5 M50d and X5 xDrive30d derivatives will be offered in South Africa.

The quad-turbo 3,0-litre diesel in the M50d churns out 294 kW at 4 400 r/min and 760 N.m between 2 000 and 3 000 r/min, completing the 0-100 km/h dash in a claimed 5,2 seconds before topping out at 250 km/h. The xDrive30d’s powerplant is the same capacity, but makes 195 kW at 4 000 r/min and 620 N.m from 2 000 to 2 500 r/min, hitting three figures in a claimed 6,5 seconds and running out of puff at 230 km/h.

For the record, the X5 xDrive50i that won’t be offered locally employs a 4,4-litre V8 petrol unit worth 340 kW and 650 N.m (for a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,7 seconds), while the xDrive40i develops 250 kW and 450 N.m from its 3,0-litre inline-six petrol engine.

BMW says the latest generation of its all-wheel-drive system is now able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels “even more efficiently as the situation demands”. It furthermore offers a rear-biased set-up for “those occasions when the driver adopts a particularly dynamic style at the wheel”.

With the off-road package specified, a separate button gives drivers the choice of four driving modes, allowing them to alter settings for the vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system, throttle response and transmission control, and the DSC system’s corrective inputs in preparation for driving on sand, rock, gravel or snow.

The new BMW Operating System 7,0 display and control concept, which makes its debut in this latest generation model, features customisable and personalised displays. It comprises an instrument cluster and a second display (both measuring 12,3 inches in diameter) that the driver can control using the steering wheel buttons, iDrive controller, touchscreen display, voice control or gesture control.

New BMW X5 Unleashed

BMW has unveiled its all-new 4th-generation X5 and it features new engines and a host of new technologies. The Bavarian brand's premium SUV is expected to arrive in South Africa in Q4 of 2018. Take a look at what you can expect from the new X5 below…

The X5, in BMW parlance, is a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that has served the brand well for almost 20 years, racking up in excess of 2.2 million sales worldwide. Now, BMW has launched the next chapter in the X5’s success story with the introduction of the 4th-generation X5.

Engine power

The initial X5 lineup in South Africa will comprise the X5 M50d and the X5 xDrive30d when it arrives in Q4 2018.

Two new engines make their way into the new X5. First up is the range-topping BMW X5 xDrive50i, powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 with peak outputs of 350 kW and 650 Nm. The manufacturer claims the xDrive50i will take 4.6 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 kph with the help of the xDrive all-wheel drivetrain.

The second is a straight-six 3.0-litre turbopetrol with 250 kW and 450 Nm of torque fitted in the X5 xDrive40i. It is said to sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 5.5 seconds.

The base diesel engine offering (in the X5 xDrive30d) is a 6-cylinder, 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine with 195 kW and 620 Nm, while the mighty X5 M50d will be powered by a 6-cylinder, 3.0-litre quad-turbodiesel engine with no less than 294 kW and 760 Nm of torque on tap. The X5 M50d will achieve 0 to 100 kph in 5.2 seconds, BMW says.

All X5 derivatives will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid version and the high-performance X5 M can be expected at a later stage.

A spokesperson from BMW SA has confirmed that only the X5 M50d and X5 xDrive30d will be offered in South Africa.

An Off-Road Package will be offered as an option for the first time, allowing the X5 to tackle sand, rock and snow.

Power distribution is achieved in conjunction with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, which can split torque between the front and rear axles as needed, but further provide a rear-biased setup for a sportier driving experience.

Ride settings can be enhanced with the standard dynamic damper control system. Adaptive M Suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation and integral active steering will be offered as an option, as well as a 2-axle air suspension system for optimum ride comfort. An optional off-road package will also be offered on the X5 for the first time, which includes rugged underbody protection, 2-axle air suspension and an electronic rear differential lock to tackle surfaces such as sand, rock and snow.

Exterior design

Built at BMW’s Plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the new X5, which will be offered in either xLine or M Sport trim, has grown in all directions and its front-end look is dominated by a large kidney grille and standard-fit adaptive LED headlights (BMW Laserlights will be offered as an extra-cost option). At the rear, LED tail lights are standard too. The new X5 rides on standard 19-inch light alloy wheels, but up to 21- and 22-inch options will be available.

Interior design

The X5's interior has been enhanced with two 12.3-inch screens.

The major change inside the new X5 is the inclusion of two 12.3-inch screens. The first serves as a digital instrument cluster, while the 2nd screen houses the infotainment system and vehicle functions. Rear passenger entertainment in the form of two 10.2-inch screens will also be offered as an option.

The front sports seats are electrically adjustable and heated for added comfort and 4-way climate control is standard. A larger panoramic glass roof is also fitted to enhance outward visibility, while also letting more light into the cabin.

An interesting feature on the new X5 is a 2-section tailgate (optional), which can be operated automatically and hands-free. An optional and electrically adjustable 3rd row of seats will also be offered on the new X5. Load space is claimed at 645 litres, expanding to 1 860 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Driver assist and safety features

The new X5 is equipped with an array of driver assistance systems to improve safety.

The new X5 is equipped with a variety of driver assist features to improve safety and these include the standard Active Driving Assistant with Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are detected), Cross Traffic Alert (rear) and Speed Limit Information. Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Cross Traffic Alert is also available.

An optional Driving Assistant Professional package will also be offered which will include Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Keeping Assistant and Automatic Lane Change Assistant. Furthermore, Parking Assistant Plus will take care of acceleration, braking and steering to manoeuvre into a parallel parking bay.

BMW South Africa has confirmed that the new X5 will arrive in South Africa in Q4 of 2018. We will keep you updated as soon as local specification and pricing details become available.

I quite like the interior. I prefer high quality switch gear compared to 3 or 4 finger print magnet non tactile touch screens. Can't stand the way Audi and Range Rover have gone. It makes no sense to me.

Upcoming BMW X6 Easily Rendered From The New X5 Shots

The new BMW X5 is finally official and the feedback has been pretty positive for the new design of the Bavarian off-roader but what about the unreleased all-new X6?

Well it should debut sometime next year and with the premium coupe-SUV niche getting more crowded and more competitive, BMW can only hope their answer is enough to come out top in terms of sales.

These renderings by independent designer Aksyonov Nikita could easily pass off as official images from BMW. Honestly, there’s not much that can be done wrong with the X6 – just take the X5, give it a sloped roofline and a more stylish hatch, and you’ve got the next generation of what is one of the most polarizing vehicles on the market today.
