BMW X6 (Gen 3 - G06)

BMW X6 M50i 2019 review

Should I buy one?

It mightn’t be as practical, as roomy nor ultimately as comfortable as the X5, but the X6 does have its own special appeal. In M50i guise, it certainly feels brash and powerful, though if previous generations of the big SUV-cum-coupe are any indication it will be the more than £16,000 cheaper xDrive30d that makes for the best buying in the range. Time will tell.

For now, however, the new model appears to represent a major advance on its predecessor in every major area, except perhaps its ride.

New (third-generation) BMW X6: pricing for South Africa announced

Pricing for the new BMW X6 range – which will comprise three variants (including two M Performance models) at launch in South Africa – has been revealed.

Of course, the range-topping X6 M Competition is expected to arrive on local shores only in May 2020, with pricing for the full-fat flagship yet to be announced.

So, how much are you looking at for the other variants? Well, the line-up starts with the X6 xDrive40i, which kicks off at R1 327 800 in standard guise (or R1 383 400 in xOffroad form and R1 386 700 with the M Sport package specified). This variant offers 250 kW and 450 N.m from its turbocharged 3,0-litre inline-six petrol engine.

Then there’s the X6 M50i and M50d, which are each priced from R1 680 200. The M50i’s turbocharged 4,4-litre V8 generates 390 kW and 750 N.m, sprinting from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,3 seconds.

The M50d, meanwhile, offers 294 kW and 760 N.m from its quad-turbo 3,0-litre inline-six diesel powerplant, taking a claimed 5,2 seconds to hit three figures. Both models feature an M Sport exhaust system as standard, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

BMW X6 (2020) Specs & Pricing

Kicking off the range is the petrol-powered 40i, which is a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder motor with 250 kW and 450 Nm. BMW claims a 5.5 sec sprint time to 100 kph. The second petrol engine available is the M50i which is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 390 kW and 750 Nm. This will be the fastest X6 until the X6 M Competition arrives and it's capable of 0-100 kph in 4.3 seconds. For those wanting a diesel motor, the X6 M50d is available with its quad-turbocharged 6-cylinder which has 294 kW and 760 Nm and it'll sprint to 100 kph in a claimed 5.2 seconds. All BMW X6 derivatives come with automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive.

Final confirmation and specifications will be made at the vehicle's launch which we expect will be before the end of 2019.

BMW X6 (2020) International Launch Review

Summary

The 3rd-generation BMW X6 certainly ups the ante in terms of aggressive design, and it is a smarter, more high-tech and arguably more agreeable model than any X6 that preceded it. I would personally suggest the Audi Q8 is a superior offering – if only because it’s not so divisive to look at – though I could be missing the point of this type of boutique luxury "off-roader" completely by saying that. Suffice to say, you won’t see me rocking a Prada tracksuit, Gucci day pack or Balenciaga hi-tops anytime soon.

Verdict

If power and status mean a lot to you, you're most likely to find much to like about the new X6. It has a striking road presence and its coupe-like styling turns heads (for a variety of reasons). Importantly though, it offers more than enough performance to match its expressive design. The X50d's quad-turbodiesel engine is hugely impressive. Suffice to say it can propel the X6 at a heady pace, yet it's reasonably refined and returns admirably low fuel consumption at times. The interior, when specced with all the bells and whistles, is a luxurious space to occupy, especially on longer journeys.

Yes, we found the BMW X6 marginally compromised in terms of practicality, but it’s still hugely capable (as we discovered during the aforementioned unconventional test). With this in mind, buyers will have to decide what’s more important to them... If outright practicality and maximum load capacity is the end goal, then the X5 may well be worth a closer look, but then you need to be happy to sacrifice all that kerb appeal. Then again, it’s also worth noting the equivalent X5 M50d is significantly cheaper too (it's priced from R1 680 148, making it just over R160 000 cheaper than a standard X6 M50d).

Moreover, this X6 M50d' asking price easily breaches the R2-million mark by virtue of being loaded with options, which makes it a pricey proposition compared with (albeit less muscular) rivals such as the Audi Q8 45TDI quattro (R1 573 500) and Mercedes-Benz GLE 400d 4Matic Coupe AMG Line (R1 761 800). For performance aficionados, the BMW's surfeit power and torque will be a decisive advantage, but bear in mind that the Q8 and GLE, in Coupe form, still offer better claimed interior space than the X6, which might be worth keeping in mind when you're shopping in this segment.

Should you consider the X6 M50d? The short answer is yes, definitely, provided you can afford it. However, your final decision may very well come down to a matter of brand allegiance and personal taste, which will ultimately determine where you sign on the dotted line. We therefore suggest that you book a few test drives before making your final decision. This X6 M50d is tough to beat, though.

Pricing! BMW SA introduces new base (diesel-powered) X6 xDrive30d

BMW South Africa has quietly expanded its X6 range, slotting a new xDrive30d derivative in at the foot of the local line-up.

Until now, the local X6 range had comprised just one oil-burning model (the M50d) and three petrol variants (the xDrive40i, M50i and flagship X6 M Competition).

Now, however, the xDrive30d has been added to the mix, taking the range’s entry price down ever-so-slightly to R1 518 872 (thanks to duoporta.com for the tip!). Should you tick the M Sport box, this figure increases to R1 577 772.

The X6 xDrive30d employs the Munich-based firm’s inline six-cylinder turbodiesel unit (already offered in the X3, X5 and X7 ranges, as well as in the 730Ld), which delivers 195 kW and 620 N.m to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing:

BMW X6 xDrive30d: R1 518 872
BMW X6 xDrive40i: R1 546 118
BMW X6 M50d: R1 944 548
BMW X6 M50i: R1 954 484
BMW X6 M Competition: R2 882 320

AC Schnitzer hands BMW X6 some extra attitude with fresh body kit

BMW specialist AC Schnitzer has handed the X6 some extra visual attitude, lending the coupé-style SUV an even more head-turning look.

Contributing to most of its added presence is a body kit consisting of a front splitter, side skirts and a rear wing. These items are accentuated by a set of wheel arch extensions, widening the vehicle by 18 mm at the front and some 60 mm at the rear.

As pictured, the X6 is fitted with a set of 22-inch AC1 light alloy wheels, which can be finished in two-tone or Anthracite shades. Those looking for an alternate design can specify the 22-inch Type V lightweight wheels. Further enhancing the stance is a suspension spring kit that lowers the ride by 25 mm, fore and aft. This kit, though, cannot be fitted to cars with air suspension.
