BMW plans to unveil their largest SUV to date – the X7 – in a concept form at the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. The home show of BMW and other German automakers will host a large number of world premieres, with BMW planning to also unveil the new 6 GT, i3 S and X3. Other surprises might be planned as well.

Packing three full rows, the BMW X7 will also be the brand’s first true seven-seater. It will also have comparable luxury to the Range Rover and will even have trim levels that challenge the ‘Rover’s Autobiography line. So not only will it be the largest vehicle ever made by BMW but it should also be the most luxurious.

BMW is likely to offer the X7 with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, alongside conventional engines. Sources have previously speculated that it will feature a selection of six and eight-cylinder engines, such as the 3.0-liter diesel in 30d, 40d and 50d guises and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter petrol V8 from the X6 xDrive50i.

A plug-in hybrid variant could be similar to the drivetrain used in the 740e, which packs a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder, 16-valve 255-hp engine, combined a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic), high-precision direct injection and eDrive 111-hp electric motor. Total power output of 322 hp.

The seven-seat X7 is being developed with the US and Chinese markets in mind, but was confirmed for UK sales by BMW head of sales and marketing Ian Robertson last year.BMW wants the X7 to be the brand’s flagship luxury vehicle and offer luxury levels above even the 7 Series sedan.

That kidney grill looks completely out of sync with the rest of the car's aesthetic. They've vertically over-stretched it.

BMW Reveals Glimpse Of X7 In ‘Pre-Production’ Form

BMW has released a handful of teaser images showing the new X7 in the pre-production phase at the Spartanburg plant in the United States.

The Munich-based brand says the production version of the flagship SUV (previewed by the Concept X7 iPerformance) is scheduled to be revealed at the end of 2018. But, in the meantime, the pre-production vehicles you see in the accompanying images are preparing to undergo “various tests under partially extreme conditions”.

Interestingly, the BMW X7 pre-production models are being built on the same assembly line as the X5 and X6, before being then handed over to “development department specialists”, who require them for homologation, registration and testing purposes.

In a bid to keep its exact shape under wraps, every pre-production X7 is fitted with camouflage at the plant

BMW X7 almost a production reality

BMW has given us a better look at the forthcoming X7 super SUV by sharing pictures and a video from the BMW Group Spartanburg factory. Check out the new X7 as pre-production models have started rolling off the line.

The BMW X7 is in the final stages of development and is estimated to hit the market towards the end of 2018. The BMW factory in Spartanburg USA is the hub for the brand's SUV models. “This is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet a further member of the X family,” said Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant. “Together with the BMW X7, a total of five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four corners of the globe.”

These pre-production units you see here will be used for testing and homologation. Despite the pre-production cars still retaining camouflage to hide the finer details, the video below gave us a quick look at the final products as they are being assembled. The BMW X7 will be the brand's answer to the Range Rover portfolio and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Nice! I'll give it a try to see how it compares to my 2017 X5. I like the look of it, but am concerned that the extra seating (which is nice, but I don't really need it), may cut into the driver comfort despite the extra overall size.

The exterior style reminds me a bit of Volvo (in a good way). I don't like that see-through gear lever though

BMW X7 to be revealed this week

BMW has teased Facebook with an image of the BMW X7, which is due to be revealed this week. Here's what we know so far.

The BMW X7 is in the final stages of development and is to be revealed in October 2018.

BMW X7

BMW has pulled back the covers on a new definition of automotive luxury. The BMW X7 blends lavish presence, exclusivity and spaciousness with the versatile and agile driving properties customers would expect from a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The latest and largest model in the BMW X line-up uses its outstanding powertrain and chassis technology, plus generous levels of space in each of its three rows of seats, a luxurious ambience and advanced equipment features, to deliver an unparalleled driving and interior experience. BMW's new design language brings the modern elegance characteristic of the brand's luxury-segment models to the exterior of the BMW X7, and adds visual poise, assurance and an overriding sense of authority.

The new BMW X7 represents the next stage in the premium carmaker's ongoing model offensive in the luxury segment. Its increased presence in the class and the systematic expansion of the BMW X model portfolio are among the key areas the BMW Group has identified - as part of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy - to ensure sustained growth in the world's car markets in the future.

The new BMW X7 will be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina. This centre of expertise for BMW X models also handles production of the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5 and BMW X6.

The worldwide market launch of the new BMW X7 will begin in March 2019.

A new measure of authority, luxury and modernity

The expansive exterior dimensions of the new BMW X7 take luxury to a new level. At 5,151 millimetres in length, 2,000 millimetres wide and 1,805 millimetres tall, and with a wheelbase of 3,105 millimetres, the X7 displays harmonious proportions and establishes itself very clearly as the new head of the BMW X model family. The high-impact presence of the new BMW X7 is underscored by its upright front end, while the chrome elements that ring the car and accentuate its unique character also influence its distinctive appearance. A new use of forms, dominated by clearly structured surfaces and precise lines, lends the BMW X7 its modern and progressive aura.

The largest kidney grille ever designed for one of the brand's models bestrides the front end of the new BMW X7. Together with the slim twin headlights extending up to the grille, it emphasises the width of the car and creates an inimitable presence. The new BMW X7 comes as standard with LED headlights, while BMW Laserlight with Adaptive LED Headlights can be specified as an option. This system employs a BMW Laserlight spotlight with Selective Beam to optimise the high beam function, and as a result the range of the non-dazzling high beam has been increased to a maximum 600 metres. Blue x-shaped elements, which split up the hexagonal light sources inside the familiar BMW twin headlights, make a distinctive visual statement. On cars with standard specification, the wide lower air intake is given extra structure by a horizontal chrome bar. The Design Pure Excellence equipment line brings a three-dimensional version of the bar that turns upwards at its outer edges. Integrated discreetly into front apron on either side of the aluminium underguard are slim LED front foglamps. Another model-specific feature is the particularly large BMW roundel on the bonnet.

Range-topping BMW X7 rivals Mercedes-Benz GLS

BMW’s all-new large SUV, on sale in March 2019, will make its public debut at the Los Angeles motor show

BMW is targeting the Land Rover Discovery and Mercedes-Benz GLS with the new X7, its seventh and largest SUV to date.

Pictured here in production form for the first time ahead of a planned public debut at the Los Angeles show in November, the seven-seater is set for UK delivery next March at a price of £72,155 for the entry-level X7 xDrive30d.

Conceived to provide BMW with a greater presence in the growing upper-luxury SUV market, the X7 aims to offer the comfort and opulence of a 7 Series with the versatility and off-road prowess of the new fourth-generation X5, with which it shares much of its mechanical and electrical architecture.

Key markets for the X7, which goes under the internal codename G06, are the US, China, Russia and the Middle East. To bolster growth in those luxury-driven markets, BMW is rumoured to be working on an even more exclusive X8 model.

Previewed by the Concept X7 at last year’s Frankfurt show, the X7’s key design elements include a large kidney grille in an upright front end, angular LED headlights with optional laser projectors, a heavily contoured bonnet, a tall glasshouse and a two-piece electric tailgate.

In keeping with its upmarket aspirations, the new model makes extensive use of chrome exterior accents and comes in two trim packages: a standard variant and the more style- focused M Sport alternative.

At 5151mm in length, the X7 is a considerable 230mm longer than the new X5 and just 89mm shorter than BMW’s longest production car, the existing long-wheelbase 7 Series. The width and height of the new BMW are 1990mm and 1805mm respectively, and it has a 3105mm wheelbase.

Inside, the X7 follows the same design theme as the latest X5, with a multi-layered dashboard that houses a digital instrument panel and a standard 12.3in touchscreen infotainment display.

Standard equipment on all models includes four-zone air conditioning, soft-close doors, a three-piece glass sunroof and a park assistant function with a reversing camera.

All three rows of seats have electric adjustment, and buyers can specify a six-seat option in a 2+2+2 configuration that includes individual second-row seats. The second row of seats are said to offer 90mm more leg room and 30mm more head room than the X5.

Luggage capacity varies from 326 litres with all seven seats in place to 740 litres with the two rearmost seats folded into the boot floor. With the second row seats stowed via a standard electric mechanism, the maximum load capacity rises to 2120 litres.

Four X7 models have been confirmed, although just three are destined for the UK. The expected volume-selling models include the X7 xDrive40i, which uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight- six petrol engine with 335bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.1sec. It manages 24.7mpg combined and emits 261g/km of CO2.

The other predicted bestseller will be the xDrive30d, which uses a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine making 261bhp for a 0-62mph time of 7.0sec. Its CO2 emissions are pegged at 171g/km with 43mpg claimed.

The performance leader of the initial line-up is the X7 M50d. It uses a quad- turbocharged version of BMW’s 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 394bhp and 561lb ft. This is sufficient to propel BMW’s largest and heaviest SUV to date from 0-62mph in a claimed 5.4sec and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. Its combined fuel consumption is 40mpg while CO2 emissions are rated at 185g/km.

All X7 models use an eight- speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system, with the X7 M50d featuring an electronically controlled M Sport differential as part of its standard equipment. Also available is an optional Off-Road Package, which features four surface-specific driving modes.

Despite offering the new X5 with a plug-in hybrid option, BMW has not yet confirmed such a powertrain for the heavier X7 due to concerns about its electric range being below the 50-mile target stipulated by Chinese market regulations. It is understood that plans exist to modify the petrol-electric powertrain used by the X5 xDrive45e iPerformance with newer battery cell technology in order to bring the X7’s electric range closer to 60 miles.

The X7 is underpinned by a double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension set-up featuring air springs, electronically controlled damping and standard 20in alloy wheels – a combination available at extra cost on the smaller X5. Optional features on the X7 include BMW’s Integral Active Steering rear-wheel steer system, an electric anti-roll system and 21in and 22in wheels.
